Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 – 1759) was a renowned Baroque composer, recognized for his exceptional musical talent. In June 1710, Handel assumed the prestigious role of Kapellmeister in the Electorate of Hanover, under the rule of the young Prince George. Although he eventually stepped down from this position, Handel's trajectory led him to compose one of his most celebrated works, the Water Music. Interestingly, this composition was created specifically for the pleasure of the same Prince George, who had now become George I of England.
Handel's Water Music was performed multiple times for the king and his esteemed guests, further solidifying his reputation as a masterful composer. To gain a deeper understanding of Handel's royal contributions, esteemed historian and classical musician, Dr. Eugenia Russell, will provide a captivating talk. Dr. Russell will shed light on Handel's extensive compositional portfolio, showcasing how his royal service ties into his wider body of work. Additionally, the talk will explore notable London landmarks that influenced Handel's compositions. To enrich the experience, musical examples will be included.
