Beach
We are excited to announce our next Books with Barb, focused on the December Athena Favorite, Like Mother, Like Mother by Susan Rieger moderated by our Book Buyer, Barb Tankel! Your ticket to the event includes a hardcover copy of the book, which can be picked up at the store anytime before the event, along with wine and light dessert. Limited to 25 participants. ABOUTLIKE MOTHER, LIKE MOTHER: An enthralling novel about three generations of strong-willed women, unknowingly shaped by the secrets buried in their family's past. Lila Pereira is two years old when her angry, abusive father has her mother committed to an asylum. Lila never sees her mother again. Three decades later, having mustered everything she has--brains, charm, talent, blond hair--Lila rises to the pinnacle of American media as the powerful, brilliant executive editor of The Washington Globe. Lila unapologetically prioritizes her career, leaving the rearing of her daughters to her generous husband, Joe. He doesn't mind--until he does. But Grace, their youngest daughter, feels abandoned. She wishes her mother would attend PTA meetings, not White House correspondents' dinners. As she grows up, she cannot shake her resentment. She wants out from under Lila's shadow, yet the more she resists, the more Lila seems to shape her life. Grace becomes a successful reporter, even publishing a bestselling book about her mother. In the process of writing it, she realizes how little she knows about her own family. Did Lila's mother, Grace's grandmother, die in that asylum? Is refusal to look back the only way to create a future? How can you ever be yourself, Grace wonders, if you don't know where you came from? Spanning generations, and populated by complex, unforgettable characters, Like Mother, Like Mother is an exhilarating, portrait of family, marriage, ambition, power, the stories we inherit, and the lies we tell to become the people we believe we're meant to be. ABOUT BARB TANKEL: Barb Tankel has been a bookseller and book buyer with independent bookstores in NY & CT for over 20 years and is an experienced book club moderator. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: To pick up your copy of the book, please come to the store located at 228 Sound Beach Avenue at any time before the event and let the person at the register know you are picking up a copy of Like Mother, Like Mother for Books with Barb.

Film Lecture– Alfred Hitchcock: Late Life (Part 2) | St. Simons Casino
Jan 24, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Beach
Once British director Alfred Hitchcock arrived in Hollywood from England in early 1940, he released a string of movie thrillers that made him one of the top directors in cinema. He worked with some top actors, such as Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman in “Notorious,” Grace Kelly and James Stewart in “The Rear Window,” and Henry Fonda in “The Wrong Man.” This was also the period Hitchcock experimented with his movies. He employed surrealist painter Salvador Dali for his “Spellbound” and created “Rope” with one seamless camera shot throughout the entire film. Hitch’s directing style during this period will be explained and demonstrated by showing selected clips from his most influential movies during his middle period.
