Author and cartoonist Navied Mahdavian will be joining The King's English Bookshop in Salt Lake City on September 25, 2023, to discuss and sign his latest work, This Country. As a contributing cartoonist at the New Yorker since 2018, Mahdavian's talent has also been recognized in publications such as Reader's Digest, Wired, and Alta Online, as well as in the books The Rejection Collection and Send Help! Before pursuing his career as a cartoonist, Mahdavian taught fifth grade, where he honed his comedic skills. This in-person event offers the opportunity to meet Mahdavian and gain insight into his artistic journey. Join ACE and Jazmin Gallegos of the Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah, for an evening of bookmaking. This special event, called Visual Journal Bookmaking, will teach students the fundamentals of creating soft-cover journals with simple stitching. Participants will gain knowledge of basic bookbinding terminology and skills, and will leave with their very own soft-cover book. This handmade journal can be used for writing, sketching, collaging, and more. Jazmin Gallegos, the K–12 & Community Outreach Coordinator for the Book Arts Program, is an experienced teacher and artist who is passionate about sharing her love for bookmaking. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Jazmin has a degree in Art Teaching from the University of Utah and is dedicated to advocating for art education in schools and community spaces.
