Author Event: Six Days in Bombay by Alka Joshi | Napa County Library
Apr 22, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Napa
Join us for a special event with Alka Joshi, author of
Six Days in Bombay
.
This event is free, but we appreciate your RSVP below so we can plan for your attendance.
ABOUT THE BOOK
In her first standalone novel since her breakout New York Times bestselling debut novel, The Henna Artist, Alka Joshi returns with
SIX DAYS IN BOMBAY
(MIRA; April 15, 2025), a sweeping story of identity and self-discovery inspired by the iconic Indian painter, Amrita Sher-Gil, known as the “Frida Kahlo of India.”
Set in 1937, the novel follows Sona, a young Anglo-Indian nurse, as she travels from Bombay to Istanbul, Prague, Florence, Paris, and London to uncover the mystery behind a famous painter’s death.
Sona, born to an Indian mother and abandoned by her British father, is a nurse in Bombay who struggles with her dual identity. When Mira Novak, a famous half-Indian painter, arrives at the hospital after a miscarriage, Sona becomes captivated by her stories of worldly adventure and reckless love. Over the course of a week, the women develop a special bond and when Mira dies under mysterious circumstances, Sona immediately falls under suspicion.
The key to proving Sona’s innocence may lie in a cryptic note and four paintings Mira left in her care, sending her on a mission to visit the painter’s former friends and lovers across a tumultuous Europe teetering on war. As Sona leaves her quiet, sheltered life in Bombay behind, she’s thrust into cultures and situations she’s never had to face, learning valuable lessons, growing in her independence, and confronting her own painful past. She also learns her beloved Mira’s charming façade hid a complicated, troubled soul.
With
S
IX DAYS IN BOMBAY
, Alka Joshi shines a spotlight on Amrita Sher-Gil through the fictional character, Mira Novak. Amrita was a prodigy. She was flamboyant, political, outspoken, sexually fluid, and charming. She’s known as India’s Frida Kahlo because the women shared so much in common. Both identified with two cultures. Amrita’s father was a Sikh aristocrat and scholar while her mother was a Hungarian Jewish opera singer. Frida’s mother was Mexican, and her father was a Hungarian/German Jew. Yet, when it came to their art, they chose to focus on their non-European identity. Both artists died young and in uncertain circumstances. Amrita was only 28. Frida was 47. Joshi likes to believe that had Amrita lived longer she would have eventually been recognized as a global phenomenon. She explains, “It’s important to me that the work of female painters like Amrita Sher-Gil is not forgotten. Paying tribute to her in this novel is also my way of reclaiming my Indian identity.”
Identity is a concept that has long fascinated Alka Joshi and it is central to this novel. “I came with my family to the United States from India when I was nine. Until then, I had only known Indian people, Indian food, and Indian customs,” she shares. “The moment I stepped on American soil, I was enchanted. It didn’t take me long to identify as American instead of Indian, but my otherness followed me everywhere. Which was I: American or Indian?” Joshi explores identity through the characters of Mira and Sona. While Mira moves with ease between two cultures, Sona is conflicted. Which culture deserves her loyalty? Which is she allowed to claim as hers?
SIX DAYS IN BOMBAY
is a “stirring, thoroughly immersive read filled with an unforgettable cast of characters, transporting settings, an intriguing quest, and a beautiful homage to the enduring bonds that connect us. Riveting, resonant, and richly detailed.” (Chanel Cleeton, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Cuban Heiress and The Last Days in Barcelona).
“Six Days in Bombay is a sparkling travelogue and a poignant journey of self-discovery all in one. . .Alka Joshi is simply the best!” —
Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network and The Rose Code
“Alka Joshi ushers readers into a world on the cusp of war, and an Indian empire on the edge of independence, both of which serve as a cleverly drawn and fitting backdrop for the story of a woman seeking answers about her own complicated identity . . . A compelling and richly textured tale of art, loss, identity, and independence, Six Days in Bombay shines.” —
Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Daughter

Author Event: Camshaft 10 by Chad McComber | Napa Bookmine
May 8, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Napa
Join us for a special event with Chad McComber in conversation with Annie Ruygt, author of
Camshaft 10.
This event is free, but we appreciate your RSVP below so we can plan for your attendance.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Camshaft 10 is a collection of short stories, poems and comedy
in a beautifully hard bound book.
It is the 10 issue of Camshaft, an independently published zine that has been available in the underground of the Bay Area since 2003. Camshaft has delivered stories of strangeness, journals of personal memory and poetry. The ongoing horror serial, “The Well” has been published throughout.
This latest edition of Camshaft has been beautifully designed by Annie Ruygt Bernard (another Napa native) and the cover is especially striking. There are six stories contained within, two poems and one comedic piece. The stories are widely ranging in scope and theme, from science fiction to familial introspection to an imagined encyclopedic entry of a failed west coast record company of the 1920s. In “The Shitstorm,” we meet a brilliant inventor who finds redemption by curing the human race of relieving themselves only to meet disastrous consequences. In “The Friendly Curse,” a young woman discovers a curse has been put on her family for the last three generations and she must travel to a secret cult in Ullville, California to uncover the mystery of her great-great grandmother’s past. And if you think that today’s politics are unapologetically disgusting, “Colonel Gerbenpepper’s Fancy Speech” reminds the reader of the gilded age’s most corrupt Senator, Colonel Gerbenpepper. Camshaft 10 is a compilation unlike any other, leaving you to laugh, to shudder and to have much to contemplate upon completion.
"
I first encountered CAMshaft years ago in its original skin as a handmade indie zine. There
was something raw and almost dangerous about the high-contrast Xeroxed pages and
stapled binding holding an eclectic mix of satire and prose within its crooked pages. With
the publication of CAMshaft 10, Editor in Chief Chad McComber has chosen to leave the
DIY esthetic behind at the Kinkos, releasing instead a stunning hardcover novella length
tome in celebration of his tenth issue.
While the production value has increased dramatically, I was thrilled to discover that the
unpredictable punk-rock aesthetic of those early issues has remained intact. The book
opens with a note from the editor followed by a satirical “letters” section that sets the
stage for serious writing that doesn't take itself too seriously.
The rest of the book is a series of short stories and humor sketches penned by McComber,
including a longer piece in the middle called The Friendly Curse. A continuation of the
serialized fiction, The Well, which has its 10th installment in this book, is contained.
In closing, CAMshaft may have grown up and put on some fancy clothes with this latest
installment, but at its heart, it will always be that immature little scamp with staples in its
spine, sling-shotting rocks at the conventional norms of prose and humor.

Author Event: The Wines of California by Elaine Chukan Brown | DECANT Napa Bottle Shop & Bar

Napa
Join us for a special event with Elaine Chukan Brown, author of
The Wines of California
.
This event is free, but we appreciate your RSVP below so we can plan for your attendance.
ABOUT THE BOOK
California has always been a land of opportunity and innovation, with names and fortunes made, from the gold rush to Silicon Valley. It also changed the face of wine, introducing old varieties to new locations and winemaking methods. It is thanks to California that even casual wine drinkers are familiar with grapes such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, previously obscured behind the names of Old World appellations: California helped democratize wine. At the same time, thanks to Robert Parker’s championing of the region’s wines, it also became home to cult labels such as Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle, with exclusive mailing lists and prices to match.
In
The Wines of California,
E
laine Chukan Brown
takes an in-depth look at the forces that made, moved and continue to shape California wine. Part 1 looks at the history, beginning by explaining the instrumental part played by Indigenous Peoples in the early days of wine in the state. The influence of national and global forces, such as Prohibition, World War II and the 1980s health and fitness boom is explored and we see how immigrant farmworkers and environmental protest both changed how wine is grown today. In Part 2 Brown guides readers through the regions, introducing wine producers throughout California’s 154 viticultural areas (AVAs) and showing that there are exciting wines being grown beyond the familiar destinations of Napa and Sonoma. In Part 3 Brown focuses their attention on the future, looking at the combined issues of evolving markets and climate change and assessing how California might innovate its way through the challenges posed. The three parts form a cohesive whole, offering a wine book with a difference, that considers wine through the lens of social history.
Supported by colour maps and photographs, it is an indispensable resource for all those seeking a complete picture of California wine.
"
The Wines of California is an instant classic, moving beyond the standard recounting of grape varietals and winemaking trends. Elaine’s book speaks in depth to California history, telling a complete (and often unknown) story of the state of California wine.
" -
Margot Mazur, The Fizz
"
Elaine delivers a powerful, deeply researched take on the history of California wine—connecting the evolution of wine in the Golden State to larger patterns in American history, global politics, and cultural change. With her trademark no-nonsense honesty, Elaine has written what might be called a tough-love letter to California wine—celebrating its innovation, leadership, and resilience while challenging the industry to reckon with its past and navigate the future.
