Canton Modern: Art and Visual Culture, 1900s–1970s | M+
Jun 28–Oct 5, 2025 (UTC+8)
Hong Kong
Canton Modernpresents twentieth-century Cantonese art and visual culture in its full complexity as an important chapter in global modernism. United in a shared linguistic and cultural identity, the southern port cities of Guangzhou (also known as Canton) and Hong Kong were historically marginal in China. The birthplace of revolution, the two cities gave rise to a distinctive visual and artistic modernism, one shaped by cross-cultural interactions and tensions between conservative and progressive artworlds. Cantonese artists broke away from the elegant poetics of classical ink painting to forge a socially oriented realism, depicting subjects ranging from leisure and labour to war and disaster. Working as journalists and publishers, they exploited the immediacy and circulation of print, photography, and cartoons to intervene in and even reform society.

"The Purple Hairpin" Cantonese Opera Performance | Hong Kong Cultural Centre
Jul 26–Jul 27, 2025 (UTC+8)
Hong Kong
"The Purple Hairpin" was grandly performed in 2010 in Hong Kong, Foshan, and Guangzhou. This production was a cultural and artistic exchange work meticulously crafted by teams from five cities: Hong Kong, Foshan, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. At the time, the show underwent a forward-thinking reform, making it highly striking and leading the aesthetic trends of contemporary art while keeping pace with the times. In terms of design, the traditional four-hour script of "The Purple Hairpin" was condensed into two and a half hours, with experts from the five cities collaborating on the music, set design, lighting, and costumes.
The stage design was inspired by an exquisite "gift box", presenting this Refined production as a grand offering to the audience. An innovative concept was adopted, using a long silk satin cloth for rapid scene changes, and through a unique fusion of light and shadow, it created a sense of separation between humanity and space. This approach elegantly showcased the love story of Li Yi and Huo Xiaoyu in a fresh and novel way. The production created a distinctive visual effect, breaking away from traditional performance models. With graceful sleeve movements and elegant music, these design arrangements aimed to provide the audience with an unforgettable viewing experience.

In Conversation: Nicole Coson, Peng Ke, Anqi Li, and Tobias Berger | Hauser & Wirth
Jul 10, 2025 (UTC+8)
Hong Kong
In Conversation: Nicole Coson, Peng Ke, Anqi Li and Tobias Berger On the occasion of the group exhibition 'Aura Within' at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong, please join us for a conversation with Anqi Li, the curator of the exhibition, and the artists Nicole Coson and Peng Ke to discuss their inspirations and creative practices as Asian artists working in different contexts, as well as the curatorial idea behind the exhibition. The talk will be moderated by Tobias Berger. About the Artists Nicole Coson works in printmaking, video, and sculpture, exploreing the process of image-making as it pertains to personal memory, history, and material culture. Coson’s printed canvases oscillate delicately between surface and depth; by integrating symbolically-loaded found objects into the etching press, the concrete material culture transforms into analog, indexical images through their negative imprint. This oscillation between pattern, image and object is embraced by Coson to tell stories of family, society and coloniality, but never in straight-forward ways. Rather, the artist is deeply committed to the aesthetic politics of opacity and by extension, privacy, secrecy and intimacy. Rather than alluding to a hidden meaning behind her barrier motifs (camouflage patterns, window blinds, woven baskets, food crates), Coson invites us to study them as such—barriers—and the critical potential of visual obfuscation. Born in 1992 in Manila, Coson lives and works in London. Peng Ke both works with images and writes, her experimental practice wandering between images from photography books and personal experiences from reality. Peng explores the experience of living in the fast-developing urban environment, such as small cities in China. One can peek into the colorful corners of these rural cities through the finely tuned images captured by Ke’s lens. Peng's primary concern is with the relationship between the human condition of urban spaces and the collective experiences of the people there. In her photographs, the tasteful colors, charming forms, strange outlines and varied textures of the indoor and outdoor daily scenes of China, among other places in Asia, are vividly and incisively displayed in their very original forms. Born in 1992 in Changsha, Peng lives and works between Los Angeles and Shanghai. About the Curator Anqi Li is an independent curator and museum scholar based in Hong Kong. Currently a PhD candidate at the University of Hong Kong, she focuses on the cultural politics of contemporary art institutions. Formerly Curator of Education and Public Programs at Para Site, she has worked at the Harvard Art Museums, Hammer Museum, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her recent projects include Supper Club (2024), Liminality (West Bund Museum, 2023), Lost in Translation (Galerie du Monde, 2023), and Curtain (Para Site, 2021). Her writings have been published in Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, Artforum, and ArtAsiaPacific, among others. She holds an EdM from Harvard University and a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. About the Moderator Tobias Berger, Curatorial Director, Serakai Studio. Prior to joining Serakai, Tobias Berger was Head of Art at Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts Head of Art between 2015 to 2023. In this role he spearheaded the inaugural contemporary visual arts programme for Tai Kwun Contemporary. From 2010-2015 Tobias served as the first Curator of Visual Arts for the M+ Museum in Hong Kong, working with the Museum Director to finalise the museum plans and set curatorial direction. During his career, Tobias has served in various curatorial roles for institutions across the region and globally including at the Nam June Paik Art Center (Korea), Fotofestival Manheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg, Para/Site Art Space (Hong Kong), the Hong Kong pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the Sao Paolo Biennale, ARTSPACE, Aukland and Museum Fridericianum (Germany).

She performed in The Shuffle Show’, an epic musical adventure of 1000 songs in 1 hour which sold out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and went on to appear on TEDx. Elena also holds a Guinness world record for producing and performing in Burleskathon, 24 hours of continuous Burlesque. Elena’s tongue-in-cheek and relatable comedy repertoire blended with her sublime singing voice and risque performances have worldwide audiences side-creased, exhilarated, and thoroughly entertained. An “environment” is an artwork that is actively participated in by the viewer. As the viewer moves through or around an environment, they are stimulated by objects, light, moving images, and sounds. Environmental art has been a major branch of art around the world since the mid-twentieth century, laying the foundation for today’s popular immersive experiences. However, the important history of this art form is not well understood, as most pioneering environments have been dismantled after being exhibited, and the art world has until now focused almost exclusively on male artists.

Presented by Hang Seng Bank and organized by Yaorong Culture, The Nextwave XX25 Beach Music Festival returns with great acclaim, becoming one of the most anticipated music festivals in Hong Kong. From July 5 to 6 this year, it will once again take place at Grand White Bay Beach. The organizers have invited top singers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea to let music fans experience a sizzling summer.
This year's music festival is themed around "Romance" and "Friendship." The first day's lineup includes Eric Chou, Jason Hung, Gummy B, I'mdifficult (I am a Motorcycle Girl), Bonnie Cheng, and Patti Tsai. Love songs and fine wine accompany the romantic melodies, immersing music fans in a unique festival experience!
The second day of The Nextwave XX25 Beach Music Festival features an impressive lineup of top South Korean singers performing at Grand White Bay Beach, themed around "Friendship." The performers include ITZY, CHUNG HA (Jeong Hwa), Dragon Pony, and GENBLUE.
ITZY quickly rose to fame after their debut. Their debut song "DALLA DALLA" achieved the remarkable feat of winning nine championships in Korean music shows, including seven from cable TV stations. They said, "We are very excited to participate in the beach music festival in Hong Kong. Such stages are rare in Korea! We might need to prepare some waterproof performance outfits so we can join the beach party right after our performance!"
South Korean singer CHUNG HA is also a very popular artist. She has won the Best Pop Album Award, and her music has been streamed over 1 billion times. Her participation in The Nextwave XX25 Beach Music Festival will undoubtedly make her the focus of attention.
GENBLUE, a Taiwanese group that debuted in South Korea, won the KPOP Newcomer Award at the Korea Culture and Entertainment Awards last year. This is their first time participating in a large-scale music festival in Hong Kong, and fans have been actively discussing it online.
