However, there has been a shift in recent decades, with white right-wing social movements claiming the collective memory of civil rights to portray themselves as oppressed minorities. This transformation of collective memory has far-reaching consequences, distorting history and posing a threat to multicultural democracy. Hajar Yazdiha, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at USC, has extensively researched this reimagining of the civil rights movement from 1980 to the present. She uncovers how the public memory of Martin Luther King and civil rights has been distorted, perpetuating racial inequality and evading social reality. Her work, "The Struggle for the People's King," provides a powerful and persuasive analysis of the fracture in our collective understanding of our past, present, and future.
