About An introduction to puppetry for all those who are curious in learning this ancient artform - including performers, educators, therapists, parents and grandparents. Day one will cover the basics of object manipulation, bunraku puppetry and lip syncing. Day two will go further with those skills, including devising with puppets, making simple puppets and large scale puppetry with beautifully handcrafted puppets from Paper Jungle. Isabel Lyster from Paper Jungle will join for Sunday afternoon. Tessa has been puppeteering for 15 years and has worked all over the world. She has worked and trained with various companies inc. Little Angel Theatre, Blind Summit (Olympic Opening Ceremony 2012) and Mervyn Millar - Puppetry Director of War Horse. She is Director of Tiny and Tall Productions Ltd - an award-winning intergenerational theatre company based in Bristol, UK. Access The workshop can tend to be quite physical, but we try hard to accommodate all access needs. We can provide a quiet break-out space for taking rests and can tailor exercises to be performed sitting down. Deaf participants are very welcome, Tessa has a basic level of BSL, but can't guarentee instructions will always be properly interpreted. If you have the means to bring an interpretor with you, this is encouraged. All participants are welcome regardless of age, race, disability, gender, sexual preference or religion. We work hard to create a safe and fun space for everyone. Contact For specific questions please email hello@tinyandtall.co.uk. Refunds Refunds can be given if cancelling a place up to 7 days before the course. After that, you may transfer your place to someone else but no refunds will be given. Concessions This year we are offering a 20% off 'early bird' rate if you book before July 1st (enter code EARLYBIRD2025) and a 25% off discount for groups of four people booking the weekend together. We are afraid we can't offer any further concessions. Previous testimonials include: "Lots of fun and I learned loads! Definitely gained lots of skills that I will now use in the work that I do." "Covered so much - a really good insight into the world of puppetry. Was really useful particularly in sharing knowledge and skills related to puppetry auditions." "This intensive puppetry course was a brilliant experience for performers, makers and anyone in-between. Tessa, Hester and Bella created a really welcoming and inspiring atmosphere to really step into the art and craft of puppetry. Personally as someone who doesn't not see themselves as I performer, I found myself myself more willing to explore this side of puppetry than expected, both in a group and solo-setting. A great bundle of information, experience and memories all in one go, simply brilliant two days." "The course introduced participants to the fundamentals of puppetry and laid the foundations for someone like me who intends to explore puppetry and object manipulation in the future through live performance." "It was varied BUT focused. It enabled exploration of the different types of puppets and allowed trial and error. It was definitely varied enough for a one day course and covered everything I hoped." "It was so varied that there was not a moment where I was not learning new things, non stop entertainment and education." "It was very well structured and feedback was constantly delivered" 100% of attendees would recommend it to a friend 100% of attendees would be interested in attending future courses. Bristol
Cultural Experiences
During the tour, we will explore the site including the internal and external ramparts; the site of the watch tower; and Mariner's Way roman road; discuss Abonae’s role as a port and fort, with docks for ships navigating the Avon to the Severn Estuary; the Roman road network linking Abonae to Bath and Gloucester; and visit the scheduled monument site near Sea Mills Lane, where remains of a Roman building (likely a warehouse or administrative structure) are visible. Kids free Wear weather-appropriate clothing (all-weather event) Dogs welcome Moderate fitness required Contact 07935 986 421 if lost or delayed. Meet at Sea Mills Railways Station, Sea Mills, Bristol BS9 1DX Email heathbunting@irational.org for group bookings. Abona was established as a military town and fort in the first century AD, on a headland overlooking Avonmouth. The core of the early settlement was located in the Hadrian Close/Portway/Abon House area. The town and port evolved over the next three centuries, with a civilian occupation established by the early second century. By the third century a waterfront had probably been developed at the mouth of the River Trym, providing a local trading and transhipment centre. A road once connected Abona with the City of Bath and is still evident at Durdham Down 1.5 miles to the east, and probably is marked by Mariner's Drive in Sea Mills.Civilian and military occupation continued until the late fourth century when the town expanded to the south. No evidence has been found suggesting that occupation continued into the fifth century, and it is likely that Abona declined from the later 4th century onwards before being abandoned, in common with many other Romano-British settlements. Sep 20, 2025 (UTC+1)
Bristol
Rock Concerts
Back after a sell out show on their last appearance at BAWA, we proudly present Internationally renowned Queen Tribute band The Bohemians as they take you on a high energy roller coaster ride of a Queen concert re-enacting the glory days including the 'Craziness' of the 70's, the 'Magic' of the 80's and the 'Innuendo' of the 90's. Established in 1996 and proving themselves to be the most dynamic and exciting Queen Tribute Band touring today. The Bohemians are a favourite with the official Queen fan club, as they were the first to headline the Queen fan club convention with an audience of over 2000. They were also first Queen tribute to be seen by Queen guitarist Brian May, who described the band as 'brilliant' and Queen drummer Roger Taylor who said "It's Uncanny". Rob Comber's outrageous stage antics and personality makes him the perfect Freddie. Christopher Gregory's Red Special enables him to get as close as possible to Brian May's inimitable style. Wayne Bourne hammers the tubs like drummer Roger Taylor, and Kevin Goodwin provides that unmistakable Queen backline on bass. These four guys certainly do the songs justice in this high-energy two hour show. The Bohemians set includes all the piano driven hit singles: Killer Queen, Somebody To Love, Don’t Stop Me Now, You’re My Best Friend, We Are The Champions and the amazing award winning Bohemian Rhapsody. These hits are balanced with the Guitar led anthems such as Tie Your Mother Down, Hammer To Fall, One Vision, I Want It All, We Will Rock You and the unforgettable Love of my Life. The Bohemians ability to recreate Queen live is something truly special. With trips abroad to Greece, Russia, Portugal, Holland, Switzerland, China, Jordan, Belgium & Ireland, festivals, theatres and prestigious venues, fans all over the world have experienced The Bohemians in their majestic magnificence and delivered standing ovations in response to the band. If you are a life long Freddie Mercury and Queen fan, or just want to experience the nearest thing to what a live Queen concert was like LIVE then don't miss the appearance of The Bohemians * Members prices apply to Leisure and Sports & Leisure members only ** Leisure and Sports & Leisure members can enter the Ballroom at 6.30pm on this evening. For Those I Love | The Fleece

For Those I Love | The Fleece

Sep 23, 2025 (UTC+1)
Bristol
Concerts Alternative
Under the pseudonym For Those I Love, Dublin-based singer/songwriter David Balfe delivered spoken-word-like tales of catharsis, grief, and biography. His debut self-titled album arrived in March 2021, bringing with it an evocative collection of sounds and stories. From the escapist retreat of his parents’ shed, Irish-born David Balfe found a passion for making music at a young age, crafting songs alongside close friends throughout his early years. Soon, these manifested into bands and movements: 2007’s Plagues saw Balfe and co. dabble in metalcore, while the Branch Becomes moved Balfe and his associates toward hardcore. The boldest of these came in the form of Burnt Out, a vivid post-punk group recorded in an undeveloped house belonging to bandmate Peter. The tragic death of Balfe’s best friend and bandmate, Paul Curran, marked the end of the group’s output. Under the alias of For Those I Love, Balfe returned to music two years later, paying homage to Curran with the impassioned debut release “I Have a Love” (2020). October’s “Top Scheme” took a more pointed aim at widespread misery and injustice, and Balfe’s 2021 “Birthday/The Pain” offered a brutal recollection of his discovery of a dead body at the age of six. His debut album, the self-titled For Those I Love, arrived in March that year. Comprising nine expansive, soul-searching tracks, Balfe’s first full project offered sweeping biography, emotive balladry, and soul-infused electronica.
