The Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies is pleased to present an engaging panel discussion as part of the PNCA Lecture Series, featuring renowned scholars Christopher Ian Foster and Carmen P. Thompson. The event, titled "Ban This!": Critical Race Theory, Whiteness, and the Return of American Fascism, delves into recent right-wing bans in the United States, such as those on Critical Race Theory and Ethnic and Black Studies, within the context of White supremacist and fascist political frameworks. By drawing on the invaluable insights of Black authors and Black history, this panel seeks to both comprehend and challenge these movements. Dr. Carmen P. Thompson's book, The Making of American Whiteness: The Formation of Race in Seventeenth-Century Virginia, illuminates how our nation's White supremacist past continues to perpetuate institutionalized racism and anti-Blackness. Thompson's work effectively contextualizes the current banning of books by Black authors, such as Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, bell hooks, and Sonya Sanchez, within the larger framework of White Supremacy. Dr. Christopher Ian Foster, author of Conscripts of Migration, offers an anti-colonial and Black Radical perspective to analyze the recent rise of fascist politics in the U.S., evident in bans, censorship, illiberal politics, and unapologetic racism. Join us on November 9, 2023, at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, for this thought-provoking lecture series featuring Christopher Ian Foster and Carmen P. Thompson.
