Nov 11, 2023 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los angeles
Experience the Holodomor Genocide through the powerful and evocative art of Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak. Lydia, a Ukrainian American artist, delves into the human condition in her work, drawing inspiration from her Ukrainian and American bicultural background. Born in Cleveland, Ohio to Ukrainian immigrant parents who were displaced by World War II, Lydia's art reflects her unique perspective and personal history.
Lydia's artistic journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University in 1973, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree from George Washington University in 1977. In 1991, she embarked on her first visit to Ukraine, made possible by an IREX grant. This experience further deepened her connection to her heritage and influenced her artistic expression.
Lydia's work has been exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally. Her captivating pieces can be found in numerous public and private collections, including prestigious institutions such as Oxford University, the Barrett Collection in Dallas, and the Tyler Museum of Art in Texas. Currently residing in Houston, Texas, Lydia serves as a studio faculty member at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
The Ukrainian Museum in New York has recognized Lydia's talent by showcasing her works in multiple exhibitions. Notably, her art was featured in the exhibition "Evocations" in 2013, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor. She also participated in the museum's 2015 exhibition, "The Ukrainian Diaspora: Women Artists, 1908–2015," which celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America.
In November 2020, the Museum hosted a virtual exhibition titled "Holodomor: A Remembrance," shedding light on the tragic events of the Holodomor genocide. Additionally, Lydia's remarkable contribution to the artistic community led her to be awarded a prestigious 2022-23 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award. Although her original plan to research contemporary Ukrainian social/political art in Ukraine was hindered by the ongoing war, she redirected her efforts to Poland. Collaborating with the University of the Arts in Poznan, she curated an exhibition titled "The Ties That Bind," showcasing the thought-provoking work of eight young Ukrainian artists living in Poland.

Los angeles
Artplex Gallery proudly presents its latest exhibition, Perspectives On Street Art. This captivating and must-see event showcases an eclectic array of visionary artists, converging the raw energy of street art with the vibrant spirit of pop art. Through a fusion of colors, techniques, and narratives, Perspectives On Street Art pushes boundaries and challenges perceptions, redefining the artistic landscape in unparalleled ways.
One of the featured artists is Sebastian Riffo Montenegro, a Chilean painter and digital artist known for his criticism of consumer society and socially constructed beliefs. Montenegro's work delves into the underlying mysteries of our consumerist society, inviting viewers to reconsider the subconscious consumption of images. Through his meticulous technique and selective palette, Montenegro presents thought-provoking allegories that challenge current social norms.
Another prominent artist in the exhibition is Nelson De La Nuez, known as The King of Pop Art. De La Nuez's striking mixed media artwork provides commentary on themes of wealth, power, fame, and excess in modern society. With a distinctive point of view, his work captivates viewers with its ironic and aspirational portrayal of our culture.
Sean Keith, a Las Vegas-born artist, uses his signature cartoonish style to comment on obsessions with money, fame, and capitalism. Influenced by UK street artist Banksy, Keith's artwork playfully alters popular culture images to give them new meaning. His unique approach, combined with the use of vintage newspaper as a backdrop, creates a visual contrast between reality and fantasy.
German artist Thitz takes Pop Art to the next level by integrating it with everyday reality. His vibrant city scenes, painted on paper bags collected during his travels, invite viewers to experience the sensory journey of art and life. With its broad spectrum of urban, pop, graffiti, figurative, and abstract art, Artplex Gallery continues to be a leading destination for contemporary art enthusiasts.
The Perspectives On Street Art exhibition will open its doors on November 11, 2023, at Artplex Gallery in Los Angeles.
