Book Launch - England's Insular Imagining, by Lorna Hutson | Cambridge University Press Bookshop
Nov 20, 2023 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cambridge
Join the esteemed CUP Bookshop for an exclusive event showcasing the highly anticipated release of "England's Insular Imagining: The Elizabethan Erasure of Scotland" by the esteemed author, Lorna Hutson. Notably, this insightful conversation will be held in the illustrious city of Cambridge. Engage with the author herself and Bart van Es as they delve into the captivating themes of the book. Attendance for this event is complimentary; however, spaces are limited. To secure your place, we encourage you to register promptly.
Within the pages of this groundbreaking work, Lorna Hutson delves into the profound question of how England has envisioned Scotland throughout history. Recognized as a vital contribution to the ongoing discourse surrounding British nationhood, Hutson presents a compelling argument that England employed a mythical "British History" in its quest for dominion over its northern neighbor. From military conquest to ingenious attempts at eradicating the very notion of Scotland, Hutson meticulously dissects the multifaceted strategies employed by England. This includes exploring the use of maps, treatises, military propaganda, river poetry, chorography, allegory, epic, tragedies, history plays, and masques. By examining influential works such as Spenser's Faerie Queene, Shakespeare's Henry V and King Lear, and Jonson's Masque of Blackness, Hutson reveals the intricate web of jurisdictional claims and the refusal to acknowledge Scotland's sovereignty.
Renowned scholar John Kerrigan hails Hutson's achievement as a "powerfully innovative book" that transforms our understanding of early modern literature. Through an extensive range of sources, Hutson offers fresh and authoritative interpretations, shedding light on the complexities of race, ethnicity, nationhood, and the enduring presence of Scottish cultural and political identity.
Mark your calendars for this momentous occasion, taking place on November 20, 2023, at the esteemed Cambridge University Press Bookshop, located at 1-2 Trinity Street, Cambridge, CB2 1SZ. Remember, this event is free of charge, but spaces are limited, so ensure your attendance by registering promptly. This is an extraordinary opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of England's intricate relationship with Scotland, as explored in Lorna Hutson's compelling work, "England's Insular Imagining: The Elizabethan Erasure of Scotland."
