Contact the organizer if you would like to donate to a scholarship fund to ensure that people of color and other marginalized people may attend. Statement of Solidarity: Heart Body Song strives to create a safe space for all and in order to do this must acknowledge the harm that people of color have experienced and in some cases still endure. For community singing to be fully inclusive and safe for people of the global majority and others harmed by inhumane systems, Heart Body Song is committed to standing/singing in solidarity by taking an anti-racist stance in organizing and facilitating all of our events. Community singing is a form of collective healing and without intentional, proactive action towards dismantling systemic injustice, the white supremacist inertia of our society will continue to perpetuate harm to those who are most oppressed. Without this stance, the community singing movement's aspirations for a peaceful, loving, and sustainable world will only remain a reality for the people living in white skin. In order to not perpetuate harmful and oppressive systems, Heart Body Song is committed to cultivating a space that does no harm through setting a safe container for all bodies, collaborating with artists and healers of the global majority, leveraging my white privilege to transform harmful systems, and actively and regularly participating in (and sometimes co-leading) diversity and equity trainings. https://heartbodysong.com/ Information Source: Heart Body Song ~ Sarah S. About the book (as provided by Harper Books): What if you got to do everything in your life —twice? The heart of Mitch Albom’s newest novel is a stunning love story that dares to explore how our unchecked desires might mean losing what we’ve had all along. When he is eight years old, Alfie Logan discovers the magical ability to get a second chance at everything. He can undo any moment and live it again. The one catch: he must accept the consequences of his second try—for better or worse. He grows up correcting his mistakes and saving himself from adolescent embarrassments. He even takes foolishly dangerous risks, just to see what it’s like to come close to death, before tapping back to safety. Eventually, Alfie turns his gift to his love life, studying his crushes and going back to make himself more appealing. In time, he falls deeply in love with Gianna, the woman he believes is the one. He seems to find contentment. But as the years pass, Alfie’s eye begins to wander. Which is when he learns a lone caveat to his power: once he undoes a love, that person can never fall in love with him again. Knowing if he gives in to temptation, he will risk losing what he has with Gianna, Alfie makes a choice that changes his life forever. The book begins many years later, after an ailing Alfie is arrested for allegedly cheating and winning millions at a casino roulette wheel. As a curious detective interrogates him, he slowly uncovers Alfie’s incredible story, and its most unlikely conclusion. In Twice , America’s favorite storyteller, Mitch Albom, is at the top of his powers. A love story that is enchanting, probing, and clairvoyant in matters of the heart, Twice will make you think, weep, and overflow with love from beginning to end. About the author: Author, screenwriter, philanthropist, journalist, and broadcaster, Mitch Albom has written 8 #1 NY Times bestsellers — including Tuesdays with Morrie . His books have sold more than 42M copies in 48 languages worldwide. He has also written award-winning TV films, stage plays, screenplays and a musical. He appeared for more than 20 years on ESPN, and was a fixture on The Sports Reporters. Through his column at the Detroit Free Press , he was inducted into the National Sports Media Association and Michigan Sports halls of fame and was the recipient of the Red Smith Award for lifetime achievement. Following his bestselling memoir Finding Chika and Human Touch , an online serial that raised funds for pandemic relief, he returned to fiction with The Stranger in the Lifeboat and The Little Liar . His new novel is a stunning love story about magical second chances called Twice. Albom devotes most of his time to charitable work through SAY Detroit and Have Faith Haiti, among many other initiatives. Texas Book Festival reserves the right to cancel or postpone this event if necessary. If you have any other questions, please visit our Eventbrite FAQ or email bookfest@texasbookfestival.org. About the book (as provided by Penguin Random House): THE MUST-READ FIRST NOVEL FROM JENNA BUSH HAGER’S NEW VENTURE, THOUSAND VOICES In the far future, one young woman finds herself torn between two loves—and two sides of a rebellion boiling under the surface—in the first novel of a sweeping dystopian romance series. The stunning hardcover of Conform features a custom-stamped case, beautiful endpapers, and foiled jacket. “Compulsively readable and vividly written—it kept me awake long past my bedtime!”—Sarah J. Maas, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Court of Thorns and Roses “An irresistible romantic debut with a love triangle that will have you picking sides . . . then changing sides . . . then changing sides again.”—Veronica Roth, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divergent A lifelong outcast, twenty-seven-year-old Emeline spends her days alone, sorting ancient art for destruction. Centuries after a catastrophic war nearly decimated humanity, society is now ruled by an elusive and technologically advanced group called the Illum, who constantly monitor the population’s health and mandate procreation contracts. But Emeline’s bleak existence is shattered when, for the first time in decades, an Illum named Collin takes a Mate: Emeline. Baffled as to why she was chosen, Emeline is swept into the dangerous game of the Courting, where one wrong move can mean elimination. Soon, she discovers a rebellion rising in secret, and that her Mate may be keeping secrets of his own. Collin is confusing, both cold and protective, and worse, she finds herself drawn to the very last person she should be falling for: Hal, one of the resistance leaders. As she draws closer to both Collin and Hal, the Illum exercise their power in increasingly brutal ways, forcing Emeline to question everything—most of all whether she’ll have to give up her heart and even her life to stop them. About the panelists: Ariel Sullivan lives in Connecticut with her husband, two sons, and their two French bulldogs. Growing up a military brat, Ariel moved every two years as a perpetual new kid; Ariel often observed from the outskirts, where a deep love of reading was born. When she isn’t writing, Ariel loves to read everything from poetry to psychology, bake with her sons, listen to live music, and travel. Conform is her first novel. Jenna Bush Hager is the host of TODAY with Jenna & Friends and the founder of the wildly popular Read With Jenna book club. Since launching the club in 2019, she has selected 83 titles—51 of which have become New York Times bestsellers. In 2022, she launched her production company, Thousand Voices, in partnership with NBCUniversal’s Universal Studio Group. This year, she launched Thousand Voices Books, a co-venture with Random House Publishing Group, through which she will publish books across all of its imprints. She has written ten books herself and is a #1 New York Times bestselling author. Date: Saturday, November 8th Start time: 1:00 pm Run time: 45 minutes Location: First Baptist Church, 901 Trinity St, Austin, TX 78701 Your ticket purchase includes a copy of I'll Have What She's Having , pre-signed by the author. There will be no public signing after this event. Please note: Each ticket purchase includes entry for one attendee If you buy a ticket and are unable to attend: We will hold your book at BookPeople for 30 days after the event. We understand that things happen, but please only order a ticket if you currently plan to attend! Texas Book Festival reserves the right to cancel or postpone this event if necessary. If you have any other questions, please visit our Eventbrite FAQ or email bookfest@texasbookfestival.org. About the book (as provided by Penguin Random House): There’s a woman I want to become, Chelsea Handler thought as a child. She’ll be strong and confident. She’ll light up a room and spread that light to make others feel better. She’ll make a living being herself. She’ll be a survivor. At ten years old, Chelsea opened a lemonade stand and realized she’d make more money if the drinks were spiked. So she added vodka to her recipe and used her earnings to upgrade herself to first-class on a family vacation—leaving her parents and siblings in coach. She moved to Los Angeles and got fired from her temp job when she admitted she didn’t know how to transfer calls. She’s played pickleball with the scions of an American dynasty. She’s sexted a governor. She shared psychedelics with strangers in Spain. When she accidentally ended up at dinner with Woody Allen, she was not going to leave the table without asking him a very personal pointed question. She went on national television and talked about having threesomes. She’s never been one to hold back. But this life of adventure and absurdity is only part of her story. Chelsea knows what it is to truly show up for her family—canine and human, biological and chosen. She’s discovered how to spend time with herself, how to meditate, how to be open to love, and how to end a relationship with dignity. She is a sister to the many women who rely on her. Surprisingly vulnerable and always outrageous, Chelsea Handler captures the antic-filled, exhilarating, and joyful life she’s built—a life that makes the rest of us think, I’ll have what she’s having . About the author: Chelsea Handler is a comedian, television host, and seven-time New York Times best-selling author whose humor and candor have established her as one of the most celebrated voices in entertainment and pop culture. After a strong seven-year run as the host of E!’s top-rated Chelsea Lately, a tenure in which she was the only female late-night talk show host on-air, she launched her documentary series Chelsea Does , followed by her talk show Chelsea on Netflix in 2016. She has penned seven New York Times best-selling books, six of which have reached #1, including her seventh and most recent book I’ll Have What She’s Having , published February 2025. About the moderator: Kathy Blackwell is an executive editor at Texas Monthly, where she oversees all lifestyle coverage, including the 2023 National Magazine Award finalist “Springs Eternal.” She contributed to the magazine's 2021 book, "Being Texan" (Harper Wave). She serves on the boards of Richard Linklater's Austin Film Society and American Short Fiction. Cultural Experiences
Liberating Structures is a set of principles and tools that promote active, engaging group participation in classrooms, meetings and workshops of any size. The very best way to learn Liberating Structures is to experience it, and that's what an Immersion offers! In much the same way you can immerse yourself in a language, you will be immersed in two (full) days of Liberating Structures: we'll overview a structure, give you the opportunity to experience the structure personally, and then debrief the experience and discuss what you learned (and what questions you still have). Through this experience, you'll become more comfortable with the structures, and will gain confidence in using the structures to meet your needs. Feedback from former participants: "Thank you for this wonderful experience! You made this feel very welcoming and accessible for people with all levels of experience." "I feel ready to fully design my next event." "This was an incredible experience. I loved the exposure to so many structures, explanations on how to customize and pair, how we were able to apply [to our] current efforts. I'll be able to apply these right away." "Great examples, lots of practice, valuable insights from the group. Gave me confidence to move into independent facilitation." In order to customize the experience to meet your needs, we'll ask you to complete a short intake survey . Want to learn a bit more about Liberating Structures? Here's an overview from Henri and Keith, the developers of the Liberating Structures approach: We want everyone who's interested in engaging to be able to attend, as long as we haven't maxed out on capacity. We recognize that individuals and companies have varying budgets and are offering three payment tiers. Registration includes: Admission on both days Lunch and snacks on both days Your own Liberating Structures deck of cards Please contact us if you have any questions about pricing. Your guides on this playful, experiential journey: Ann Blocker is a fractional COO and facilitator who still loves a good in-person experience and who has, since those days, specialized in virtual and hybrid events. Between client work and her work producing CreativeMornings in Austin and Texas, Ann’s facilitated or produced hundreds of events. Monica Armendariz is a social sector consultant and facilitator with extensive experience designing and facilitating youth and adult experiences ranging from youth summer programs to conferences to online professional learning communities. In addition to her work in education, she also provides facilitation coaching and support to other social sector folks, with an emphasis on values based, liberatory and emergent practices. She's based in Western North Carolina but still has deep roots in Texas and is a current member of the Central Texas(ish) Libering Structures User Group. Duty. Blood. Honor. Power. Saeris Fane doesn’t want power. The very last thing she needs is her name whispered on an entire court’s lips, but now that she’s been crowned queen of the Blood Court, she’s discovering that a queen’s life is not her own. A heavy weight rests upon her shoulders. Her ward—and her brother—need her back in her homeland…but the changes that have strengthened Saeris have also made her weak. Born under blazing suns, Saeris will surely die if she makes her way home through the Quicksilver. Which means that, once again, she must send someone else in her stead… “Keep your mouth shut. Stick to the shadows. And for the love of all seven Gods, do NOT crack any jokes.” Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate has defeated armies and survived all manner of horrors, but traveling back to Zilvaren with Carrion Swift might just be the death of him. The male just will not shut up. Hidden dangers await them down the narrow alleyways of the Silver City. Unfolding secrets pose impossible threats. Fisher must wrangle the smuggler and accomplish his goals quickly if he wants to see his mate again. A darkness falls across Yvelia. The realm and their friends are in danger. Together, Saeris and Fisher will pass through fire and brimstone to save them. About the author: Callie Hart is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the international phenomenon QUICKSILVER, along with many other bestselling dark romance and dark academia titles. A British expat now living in California, Callie can most likely be found sequestered away in the corner of a library, fantasizing about exciting new realms and the brooding anti-heroes who occupy them. By purchasing a book from BookPeople, you are not only supporting a local, independent business – you’re showing publishers that they should continue sending authors to BookPeople. Thank you for supporting Callie Hart, Rachel Schneider, and your local independent bookstore! Information Source: BookPeople | eventbrite
