THE WRITER’S ROOM: A Town Hall on Dance + Performance Writing | Blanc Gallery
Arts
PRJ, Sixty, and The Process have joined forces to present an exclusive town hall conversation in Chicago. This event, titled "THE WRITER'S ROOM: A Town Hall on Dance + Performance Writing," aims to provide a platform for dancers, performers, and writers to engage in a thoughtful discussion about the writing landscape in relation to dance and performance in Chicago. Together, attendees will delve into important questions, such as the needs and wants of dance and performance artists when it comes to arts writing, and the expectations of writers when writing about artists' work. Additionally, the town hall will explore how the Chicago arts writing ecosystem can better support the work of performing artists and what collective dreams we have for the future of performance, dance, and writing in Chicago. To ensure a lively and informative conversation, the town hall will be moderated and guided by artists, curators, writers, as well as hosts from Performance Response Journal, Sixty Inches From Center, and The Process podcast. This community event will take place at Blanc Gallery and is free and open to the public. Please note that an RSVP is required. As part of the event, The Process podcast will be conducting short interviews with attendees to gather their insights on dance writing and its connection to their creative process. Some of these interviews will be featured in a future episode of The Process. The town hall will be set against the backdrop of the exhibition "AT FIRST GLANCE," showcasing select works from Patric McCoy's extensive collection of photography. These images offer a unique glimpse into the personal and political landscape of Black Chicago during the 1980s. The exhibition will be on display until November 25, 2023. For those attending in person, masks will be required, and complimentary masks will be provided if needed. While food and drinks will be served, attendees are kindly asked to keep their masks on when not eating or drinking. This hybrid event will also be available virtually via Zoom, and live CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) will be provided both in-person and online to ensure accessibility.
