The WCSU MFA Visiting Artist Lecture featuring Hangama Amiri, an interdisciplinary artist, will take place on November 15, 2023, at the Visual & Performing Arts Center in Danbury, CT. This event is open to the public, but seating is limited. Hangama Amiri, originally from Afghanistan and now residing in New Haven, CT, obtained her MFA from Yale University in 2020, following her BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her artistic practice combines painting, printmaking, and textiles to craft narratives inspired by her homeland. By exploring themes of identity, gender, and the consequences of geopolitical conflicts, Amiri's work sheds light on the daily lives of Afghan women both in their home country and in diaspora communities. The artist's recent exhibitions, such as "A Homage to Home" at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT, and "Thinking Historically in the Present" at the Sharjah Biennial 15 in the United Arab Emirates, have garnered critical acclaim. Her work has been showcased nationally and internationally, including solo exhibits in Denver, NYC, Toronto, London, and Rome. In 2024, her artwork will be featured in a traveling show from the Aldrich at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, accompanied by a published catalog.
