Tuscan Tournaments. The Saracen Joust, the Crossbow Palio and the Game of the Bridge | Uffizi Gallery
Sep 12, 2024–Dec 1, 2025 (UTC+1)
Florence
Starting with the Saracen jousting, a popular event celebrated in the city of Arezzo, the exhibition aims to document war games using prints and drawings from various periods in the Uffizi Gallery, especially the numerous examples of helmets, weapons and armour from the famous collection of the Stibbert Museum. These knightly tournaments became popular in the Middle Ages and continued into the Renaissance, including the Crossbow Palio, which required contestants to have skills in precision, and the ancient Game of the Bridge, a contest of strength to conquer the Ponte Vecchio on foot.
Visitors will see the most iconic piece in the exhibition, a 16th-century Buratto or Saracen quintain on loan from the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. Probably a celebration to mark the marriage of Francesco I and Bianca Cappero in 1579, the changes over the centuries have transformed it from a Saracen nobleman to the European warrior we see today. The exhibition emblem is another prestigious work of art, Stefano Della Bella’s Knight in Armour, made for the procession and loaned by the Uffizi Gallery. The sumptuous, ornate costumes and robes evoke the sheer splendor of participating in these spectacular events designed to celebrate the great and the good. In another painting loaned from the CR Florence Foundation, Stefano Della Bella depicts a night procession in the Boboli Gardens in 1637. Arms and armour are loaned by Florence’s Museo Stibbert, which has one of the richest collections of material on the ancient game of bridge in Pisa. Stibbert also loaned a fine set of 17th-century crossbows richly inlaid with hunting scenes, made by a workshop in southern Germany. And the collection of the Ivan Bruschi Foundation lends an interesting letter of challenge from “the unconquered, most glorious and ever-victorious King of the Indies, Brato”, issued to announce the version of the Saracen tournament that was held on August 26, 1674 in honor of Cardinal Corsini, Bishop of Arezzo.

"The mission of The Collinsworth Cause is to imporove the lives of spinal cord injured survivors."
We chose Abby Marsh this year because she embodies what it means to Roll On And Live Long. She was our first recipient and returns every year to show her continued support. She is a pillar in the disabled community and is a guiding light to those that are looking to live their lives independently and thrive.
Abbys Story:
At seventeen, a car accident severely damaged Abby’s spinal cord between her C5-C6 vertebras. After months of prayer, Abby would make an amazing recovery, however remains a quadriplegic, meaning that paralysis would affect each of her limbs. Twelve years after her surgery, her joyous aura and loving attitude, all fueled by her trust in God's plan for her life, far overshadows the adverse effects of living with quadriplegia. Through practice, determination and intuitive problem solving, Abby has adapted to her disability in a way that many have not. Despite this, her ability level is constantly dependent on the environment in which she finds herself. Recently Abby and her fiancé Sam got engaged, we are honored to be a part of them starting their new lives together. We are fundraising for adaptive technology for their home, unfortunately everything that is adaptive costs more than it does for able-bodied people. Abby wants to remain independent and grow in her independence in her new home. This goal is possible through this technology. Abby and her fiancé Sam Mitchell are looking forward to this opportunity to help gain their goal. Each of them love to serve the community through church and in the disabled community. Abby loves to take part in adaptive sports, and he is studying to become a physical therapist. When they met in 2022, they were confident in their relationship. They also accepted that the future would present unique challenges for them. As they both move forward into the future, one of those challenges will be creating and maintaining a home that assists Abby in her disability, rather than hinders her further. We want this home to be a place that can accommodate Abby in her daily activities. As we build this home, many details often considered luxuries are necessities for Abby. Zero entry and wide doorways are needed for her chair to pass through. Abby needs about 4 square feet beside or behind a doorway to open them, although power doors are much easier for her to operate. The hallways and corners must have enough area for her chair to make appropriate turns. Additionally, there are many activities of daily living that Abby wants to facilitate her growing independence. These would include a kitchen with roll under counters that can elevate, and an inductive stove top to prevent burns where her sensation in her hands/arms is gone. Other equipment such as an oven, dishwasher, refrigerator and washing machine all need to be specifically oriented and adapted so that Abby can operate them. These are only a few aspects of this future home that we are asking for your help with. Adapting the environment to Abby’s needs is often a fun challenge, and we expect and embrace this aspect. This introduction has only scratched the surface of what living with paralysis is like. We are asking for your help so that this home will be a blessing and not a frustration. We are asking for your help because we need it. We are grateful and thank you in advance for any help that you can offer us.
