The Aikido Association of America is proud to announce a seminar featuring James Nakayama Sensei (Aikido Association of America - Western Region Shibucho) and guest instructors hosted at Tenshinkan Dojo. James Nakayama, 7th Dan, is chief instructor of Chushinkan Dojo. He started his aikido training in 1973 at Orange County Aiki Kai (OCAK) under Harry Ishisaka Sensei. In 1997, he was awarded the title of Shihandai, assistant to Toyoda Shihan. In that same year, he became the AAA Western Regional Director and head of its Black Belt Association. He held the position of Regional Director until 2011, when he became AAA Western Region Shibucho, branch leader for the Western States in charge of the Regional Test Committee. It is the ancient meditative Japanese practice of gently floating pigments on the surface of water with a brush and then capturing the mono print image on an absorbent paper. If so inclined, students may then register for the 6 week Ikebana introductory course where they can more formally train in this beautiful art form. Instructor Information Professor Charles Harris has assisted with and organized major Midwestern ikebana exhibitions at the Chicago Botanic Garden, conducted flower demonstrations at Columbia College, the University of Iowa, the Art Institute of Chicago, Northeastern University and Loyola University. At the request of Senior Professor Ikka Nakashima, he assumed leadership of the Chicago Chapter of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society. Upon the death of Professor Nakashima, he assumed the responsibility of curating and donating the extensive collection of Japanese items in her estate. That collection now resides at the Japanese Culture Center. The future of ikebana and the Ikenobo School is strong with a new generation of leadership embodied by Headmaster Designate Senko IV. Professor Harris is committed to guiding the Chicago Chapter by maintaining the classical standards of his predecessor while introducing the modern Ikenobo curriculum and forms to a new generation. Ikebana originated with Ikenobo, beginning in Kyoto, Japan, as a Buddhist floral offering. Passed down through generations of the Ikenobo family and from teacher to student, Ikenobo has spread throughout Japan and around the world. The Chicago Chapter is one of hundreds worldwide that study and teach the art of Japanese flower arranging, Kado, as taught by the Ikenobo School of Kyoto, Japan. In 2013, they celebrated their 550th year of written history and 1,000 years of oral tradition.The Chicago Chapter was founded over 50 years ago by Senior Professor Ikka Nakashima. She is the second woman ever to receive the highest honor given outside the Imperial family, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays. History and Memory in the Landscape: A Conversation with Dawoud Bey & Colette Veasey-Cullors | Einstein Visiting Artist Lecture Series Join Dawoud Bey and Otis College provost Colette Veasey-Cullors for an engaging talk centered around Dawoud Bey’s construction of history and memory and his necessity to provoke a visual conversation about the past in the present moment. They will discuss how Bey uses the photographic medium as a “piece of the American fabric that is not always engaged or amplified in the Great American narrative;” a reimagining of history that centers and magnifies those unseen narratives and subjects while simultaneously engaging with the history of photography. About Dawoud Bey: Groundbreaking artist and MacArthur Fellow Dawoud Bey examines the Black past and present. His photographs and film installations have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe. Bey’s work has been the subject of numerous solo museum exhibitions, including Dawoud Bey: Street Portraits (2024-2025) at the Denver Art Museum, Dawoud Bey: An American Project organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art (2020-2022), and Elegy at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (2023-2024) and New Orleans Museum of Art (2026). He has been the subject of several monographs, including Elegy (Aperture/VMFA, 2023), which chronicles Bey's history projects and landscape-based work. Bey is the recipient of numerous awards including five honorary doctorates, and in 2024, the artist was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His forthcoming solo exhibition, Dawoud Bey: Street Portraits, opens at the Denver Art Museum in November 2024. Bey lives and works in Chicago and New York. He is currently a Critic at Yale University, where he received his Masters in Fine Arts, and is Professor Emeritus at Columbia College, Chicago. This on-bike class will focus on the bike-handling skills you need to safely and confidently bike in city traffic. The class will be conducted in a car-free space, and is the second in the Smart City Cycling sequence. Smart City Cycling 1: Classroom or Intro to Biking in SF is a prerequisite for this course.
