Pulitzer Prize finalist
Yiyun Li’
s
Things in Nature Merely Grow
is a remarkable, defiant work of radical acceptance that considers the loss of Li’s son James. It is a book that weaves clarity of thought out of an unfathomable experience, a book that matters immensely.
“There is no good way to state these facts, which must be acknowledged,” Li writes at the beginning of Things in Nature Merely Grow. “My husband and I had two children and lost them both: Vincent in 2017, at sixteen, James in 2024, at nineteen. Both chose suicide, and both died not far from home.”
There is no good way to say this—because words fall short. It takes only an instant for death to become fact, “a single point in a timeline.” Living now on this single point, Li turns to thinking and reasoning and searching for words that might hold a place for James. Li does what she can: “doing the things that work,” including not just writing but gardening, reading Camus and Wittgenstein, learning the piano, and living thinkingly alongside death.
This is a book for James, but it is not a book about grieving or mourning, about something that has an afterwards or an endpoint. As Li writes, “The verb that does not die is to be. Vincent was and is and will always be Vincent. James was and is and will always be James. We were and are and will always be their parents. There is no now and then, now and later, only, now and now and now and now.” Things in Nature Merely Grow tells the truth about loss as best words can, and challenges us to live with a measure of Li’s rigor, grace, and understanding. It is a book that testifies to its author’s indomitable spirit.

Transactional Foreign Policy and the End of the Liberal Order? | Serendipity Labs - Grand Central NYC
May 20, 2025 (UTC-4)
New York
The second Trump presidency seems to mark a decisive break with the value-based, liberal order that has shaped global politics since World War II. Emphasizing a more transactional approach to foreign policy—favoring deals over traditional diplomacy—Donald Trump’s return to the White House might create far-reaching consequences for our Western alliances, as well as for global governance, security, trade, and multilateral cooperation.
This shift challenges the norms and institutions that have long underpinned international collaboration, raising fundamental questions about the future of U.S. leadership on the world stage. About the Artist: Jeffrey Gibson grew up in major urban centers in the United States, Germany, and Korea, where he absorbed the transgressive soundtrack of the 1980s through limited access to MTV. Gibson graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995 and received a Master of Arts in painting at the Royal College of Art, London, in 1998. While in Chicago he also worked as a research assistant on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) for the Field Museum, a formative experience that fostered an ongoing interest in questions of ownership and notions of cultural translation. Though trained as a painter, Gibson began incorporating materials and techniques that deliberately reference his heritage—such as raw hides and bead work—around 2010. A major turning point in his career, in 2012 he presented ‘one becomes the other,’ his first solo exhibition of sculpture and video, at Participant Inc. Sculpture, moving image, and sound have since become an integral aspect of his practice. He is known for his immersive, multi-sensory installations that invoke and interweave such disparate contexts as faith-based spaces of communion and night clubs.

After being a professional musician for many years, Greta Morgan was on the rise and ready to step fully into her place in the music world. She’d travelled the world as a touring member of Vampire Weekend, had collaborated with Jenny Lewis, and had garnered critical acclaim with her own musical projects. But days after playing a gig in March 2020, just as the world began to shut down due to the global pandemic, she contracted a serious case of COVID-19. Subsequently, she discovered that her voice was forever changed.
In her profound and moving memoir
THE LOST VOICE
, musician and songwriter
Greta Morgan
takes readers on a deeply personal journey of developing her voice as an artist and the loss of that singing voice as a result of spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological disorder with no known cure.
With her once crystalline voice now reduced to a hush, she saw her promising career come to a standstill. Morgan takes us on a tour of the intimate highs and lows of both her vibrant musical career and her personal life, from sharing the stage with Vampire Weekend to facing unimaginable personal and medical hurdles. As spasmodic dysphonia literally made the words catch in her throat, she came to realize that speaking her truth had always been a struggle. Ironically, the act of losing her voice became the catalyst for expressing her most authentic self.
In The Lost Voice, you’ll travel with Greta while she’s on tour with Vampire Weekend and living a working musician’s life in Los Angeles, then travel back to her childhood home in Chicago, IL. and join her for her first shows in suburban basements, you’ll follow her through the dangerous terrain of the red-rock wilderness of Utah and other parts of the Southwest plateau where she grapples with the loss of her voice, and eventually come to the Catskills in New York where she seeks vocal recovery.
Exploring the purpose of creativity itself and the definition of artistic passion, Greta discovers how to broaden her artistic horizons and reimagine her sense of identity. Throughout it all, she maintains an unwavering dedication to her craft, and learns to transform her ordeal into an opportunity, find self-acceptance and discover an inner resilience she had not known before.
Morgan’s narrative serves as an inspiring testament to the transformative power of music, the ability to adapt to our circumstances, and the unexpected connection between grief and aliveness. The Lost Voice is a raw and intimate portrait of loss, self-discovery, and an artist’s choice to keep living and creating.
