Sue Ryding is one half of legendary comedy duo LipService. In 2022 her comedy partner Maggie Fox died and Sue was left with a shipping container full of stage props, costumes, wigs, hats, shoes, sheep, you name it. This show looks at all the “stuff” we accumulate, hoard and hate to let go. In this humorous and creative response to grief, Sue struggles to part with a life sized stuffed sheep, a badger onesie, some ruby slippers, a sinking bog, Charlotte Bronte’s knickers and a host of soft toys. Touring anecdotes are combined with archive footage from LipService shows. We follow the stories of things Sue has already given away, the wicker horse that appeared every night in an improvised panto, the vintage suitcases turned into a sculpture in Stockport, the crazy Chief Exec of the Tall Ships Festival who dresses up as a fish! Not all the items will be making it back up the loft ladder, so the audience is invited to take something home. Sue is aiming to end up with “the right stuff”, a small selection that captures the essence of LipService Theatre to go into a national theatre collection. Help Sue on her journey of letting go. We are pleased to welcome Robert Lethbridge (St Andrews, emeritus at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge), Claire White (Girton College, Cambridge), and Rachel Bowlby (UCL). Each of them has a book on Zola coming out in 2025. Émile Zola: A Determined Lifeby Robert Lethbridge This book explores Zola’s life and work and the ways in which these were determined by the traumatic history of his times. From humble beginnings, Zola's life was marked by the determination to succeed. Robert Lethbridge traces Zola's development as a writer, including the earliest texts and his novel-cycles, and further shows how Zola’s extraordinary creativity extended from his journalism to experiments in the theatre and even his own operatic adaptations of his novels. Lethbridge offers the reader new perspectives, informed by the most recent research, which bring together Zola’s writing and its historical context. https://reaktionbooks.co.uk/work/mile-zola Zola's Dream: Idealism on Trialby Claire White Spanning the period from Zola's epic Germinal to his fateful intervention in the Dreyfus Affair, Zola's Dream is the first book to explore how the 'quarrel' between idealists and naturalists shaped the ambitions of the novel at the end of the nineteenth century, when differences over literary aesthetics invariably spoke of far-reaching cultural and political struggles. https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/zolas-dream/68967C428EA5A49EF1CD060F9C0856F9 Émile Zola: Writing Modern Lifeby Rachel Bowlby An engaging and informative account of the work and life of Émile Zola. offers new ways of thinking about Zola's representations of the settings and stories and character types of late nineteenth-century French life. explores the juxtaposition of intimate everyday life and public history, as seen in the letters Zola wrote from his exile in south London, during the Dreyfus affair. https://global.oup.com/academic/product/mile-zola-9780198874126 All welcome. The discussion will be followed by a small drinks reception. Please register to attend. This event is supported by the IAS Book Launch Programme and has been organised by the Centre for French and Francophone Research. The centre provides a showcase for the diversity of French and Francophone studies in a global context across many disciplines at UCL, including literary studies, history, philosophy, art history, anthropology, global health, and the physical sciences. The goal is to create a space for researchers and students from across the university broadly interested in the French-speaking world to share their work and to promote interdisciplinary collaboration. More about Prof Robert Lethbridge Dr Claire WhiteAssociate Professor of French at Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages & Linguistics, Cambridge Claire White is Associate Professor of French and Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge. She specialise in nineteenth-century French literature and art, and I have particular interests in class, labour politics, aesthetics, and intellectual history. Her first book, Work and Leisure in Late Nineteenth-Century French Literature and Visual Culture (2014), explored how writers and artists of the early Third Republic engaged with burning issues of labour and leisure politics at a key moment in the history of class struggle in France. She is the co-editor of three publications: The Labour of Literature in Britain and France, 1830-1910: Authorial Work Ethics (2018); a special number of the leading journal on Émile Zola and Naturalism, Les Cahiers naturalistes (‘Zola au pluriel’, no. 91, 2017), and a special number of the journal of the Society of Dix-Neuviémistes, Dix-Neuf, on the poet Jules Laforgue (vol. 20, 2016). More about Dr Claire White Prof Rachel BowlbyEmeritus Professor at School of European Languages, Culture and Society, UCL Rachel Bowlby is Professor of Comparative Literature Emeritus at University College London. Join artist Raphael Hynes for this 6 week series of lectures focusing on the painters' journey into modernism. The lecture series will take place in-person at the gallery on Friday mornings at 11am from October 3rd to November 7th. Tickets are €6 per lecture or €25 for the series Please take care and note your desired date when booking! 6-Lecture Series Week 1: Raphael Hynes discusses how artists responded to the Enlightenment, which brought about huge political and social change. Week 2: Raphael Hynes discusses when Modern life becomes the subject for the artist. Week 3: Raphael Hynes discusses when the artist no longer feels obliged to depict a “realistic” representation of the world but instead creates a personal vision in which colour and brush work are used as a means of expression. Week 4: Raphael Hynes discusses when the flat surface of the painting becomes all important as the artist turns away from depicting the illusion of three dimensional space and concentrates instead on the expression of emotions. Week 5: Raphael Hynes discusses when the painting becomes its own reality. Information Source: Highlanes Gallery | eventbrite

Hello, My name is Helen McCormick and I'm a local artist and teacher. I've been creating objects from clay for the past 28 years, and I still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about teaching and have created this workshop to share my skills, knowledge and experience with anyone who would like to have a go for the first time or to develop their skills further. This workshop offers a relaxed, friendly space where you can connect with others while unleashing your creativity. I’ll guide you through the process of crafting a gargoyle or grotesque sculpture using traditional hand-building techniques. No prior experience is needed—just bring your imagination and a sense of fun! All materials and equipment will be provided. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout the workshop. The only thing you need to bring is an apron and wear old clothes if possible. After the workshop, I will carefully take your sculpture home and fire it in my kiln. These sculptures are not glazed as the terracotta will age beautifully in your garden over time. Your sculpture will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks after the workshop from the Walronds. I will let you know the date and time. Please keep an eye out for the emails or contact me if your email address changes. NB I am happy to store your work for 6 months after the collection date, after which time it will be donated to charity. There is FREE parking at the Walronds. The carpark is located at the back of the building. To access the carpark you will need to turn up Tiverton Road off the High Street, and then turn left just before the fire station onto Shortlands Lane. It is a narrow lane and easily missed. Drive a few yards up the lane and you will see the sign for the carpark on the left. Turn left and follow the drive through the gate ahead. Here is a link to Google Maps which should take you right to the carpark entrance. https://goo.gl/maps/JKfioUFi3FCSnCHJ9 Please follow me on Instagram and Facebook to see photographs of work made in my previous workshops. Musical Arts
New for 2025, the internationally acclaimed London Concertante presents a groundbreaking new show that reimagines the legendary sound of Radiohead in a breathtaking symphonic setting. From the guitar-driven anthems of The Bends and OK Computer—widely considered among the greatest rock albums in history—to the more experimental soundscapes of Kid A and In Rainbows, Radiohead has been a defining force in the UK music scene for over 30 years. Their ability to merge idiosyncratic influences, push sonic boundaries, and top charts on both sides of the Atlantic has established them as an almost unclassifiable phenomenon—at once ambitious, ravishing, and utterly iconic. Now, these era-defining hits are reimagined through the immersive palette of a full orchestra, faithfully capturing the spirit of a golden era in British music. The rich harmonies and textures of Radiohead’s unique sound world have been sumptuously arranged for strings, harp, woodwind, and percussion, filling a candlelit cathedral with raw emotion and kaleidoscopic colour. This unforgettable experience is a journey through Radiohead’s finest work, bringing the magic of one of the UK’s most influential bands to your doorstep. Terracotta Dragon Sculpture Workshop with Helen McCormick Hello! My name is Helen McCormick, and I'm a local ceramic artist and teacher with 28 years of experience crafting beautiful objects from clay. My passion for pottery runs deep, and I love sharing my skills, knowledge, and creative techniques with others. Join me for this hands-on workshop where you’ll learn to sculpt your very own dragon from rich terracotta clay. I’ll guide you step by step through traditional hand-building methods, helping you shape, form, and bring your mythical creature to life. As the workshop progresses, you’ll discover how to add texture and intricate details, refining your masterpiece into a striking, one-of-a-kind work of art. All materials and equipment will be provided. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout the workshop. The only thing you need to bring is a packed lunch and an apron or wear old clothes. NB: I am happy to store your work for 6 months from the collection date, after which time your work will be donated to charity. EDINBURGH ZEUHL PRESENTS BOB DRAKE will perform his irredeemably eccentric, but strangely brilliant songs that skip blithely across genre borders and hail from across his 30-year solo oeuvre. He’ll be playing electric guitar and singing about astronomy, anthropomorphic animals, wonders of antiquity, holy wells, uncanny happenings and more. Perpetually reinventing himself, his evocative musings and inventive instrumentations come together to create a numinous otherworld like no other. A world full of twists and turns and a geometry that doesn't quite add up. A world built upon a breath-taking amalgam of broken rules and unimaginable musical logic. Adventurous, enlightening, and FUN! Multi-instrumentalist / singer / lyricist and songwriter, Bob started playing instruments in, and recording bands in his native rural Midwest USA in the early 70's. In 1978 he moved to Denver, where he became a noteworthy figure in the local DIY / post-punk scene. Relocating to France in 1994, he has engineered and produced over 400 albums by obscure / independent artists from around the globe at his home studio. Among others, he has recorded and performed with Peter Blegvad, Fred Frith, John Greaves, and Chris Cutler. Bob has been involved in a multitude of other projects including Hail, Thinking Plague, 5uu's, The Science Group, AA Kismet, Vril, NIMBY, Bing Selfish and the Multiverts, The Capybaras, and many others. As a solo artist, he has performed at Cardiacs' Alphabet Business Convention in the UK, the Rock in Opposition festival in France, and played scores of solo shows in the UK and France between 2016-2019. He released his first solo album in 1994, and the most recent - his 23rd - in 2023. Bob is presenting an unmissable programme at The Waverley where each song is its own world. Bob’s music is at bdstudio.bandcamp.com. https://bdrak.com/ Sunday 5th October 2025. Early finish to allow travel from across Scotland. Doors 7:50pm. Music starts 8pm. The Waverley Bar. Fully licensed. The event will take place in the upstairs room which is, unfortunately, not accessible for wheelchair users. Limited number of tickets available through Eventbrite. Other tickets can be obtained from the promoter - please email edinburgh.zeuhl@gmail.com for more details. Tickets will be available on the door (cash or card). The tickets are priced at £10 (full price) and £6 (concessions - over 60s, students, low-waged). Information Source: Edinburgh Zeuhl | eventbrite
