2-Day High Fired Glazes for Wood Firing Course with Claude Aussage | Oxford Kilns
Mar 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
2-Day Glazes for Wood Firing Workshop 15 & 16 March 2025 We’re excited to offer a two-day course on glazes designed specifically for wood-firing at stoneware temperatures, led by renowned French ceramic artist and kiln firer Claude Aussage. This intensive workshop delves into the chemistry and techniques required to create glazes that thrive in the unique conditions of wood-fired kilns, with a particular focus on the high-fired stoneware range. Claude’s course covers essential topics such as: • Understanding glaze chemistry: The role of fluxes, silica, and alumina in achieving the desired melting behavior and surface qualities under wood-firing conditions. • Developing glaze recipes: How to adjust base recipes to enhance the ash interaction and atmospheric effects characteristic of wood-fired surfaces. • Testing and refining: Techniques for small-batch glaze testing, firing analysis, and adapting glazes to specific kilns and clays. This workshop precedes a five-day kiln-building and firing course, giving participants the opportunity to expand their expertise further by applying their glazes in practice. Attendees are welcome to enroll in any of the courses individually or as a combined learning experience. Having Claude in the UK is a rare and valuable opportunity. His expertise and passion make each session a unique event, providing both inspiration and practical skills. He returns periodically to share his knowledge, and every visit feels like a special occasion for our ceramics community. Whether you’re just beginning to explore high-fired glazes or are looking to refine your wood-firing techniques, this is an unparalleled opportunity to learn from a master of the craft in a hands-on, collaborative setting.

FASTFIRE KILN BUILDING 5-Day Course with Claude Aussage | Oxford Kilns
Mar 17, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Fastfiring Kiln Building Course 17-21 March 2025 £750.00 SAVE YOUR PLACE NOW £50 Your Eventbrite booking allows you to book a place. Once you have booked a place we will contact you to arrange a payment link for the balance of your course payment. Returning to Oxford Kilns, we have our next dates for our Fastfiring Kiln Building Course. This course is led by Claude Aussage, one of Europe's leading kiln builders. This is a wood-firing kiln of his own design, developed from decades of kiln building across the world, and adapted in the light of over a hundred firings at Oxford to meet the conditions and requirements of our kilnsite. These are the really excellent fastfire kilns, that are in almost constant use at Oxford Kilns, and on which we run our woodfiring courses. These kilns are highly adaptable, and will fire on scrap wood to 1300 degrees/cone 12 in reducing conditions over 8 to14 hours. They can produce an excellent array of wood-fired effects. The course consists of a kiln build and a first firing. It includes lectures on kilns, woodfiring and ceramics and is co-taught by Dr Robin WIlson, director of Oxford Kilns, ceramic artist, anthopologist and archaeologist. Robin has a decade of leading a high paced programme of firings at Oxford, evolving the firing techniques rapidly to make the very best of the kilns and wood. You will be able to bring your own pots and fire them in the kiln you build. There is free camping on site, with hot showers and an out-door kitchen, or you can arrange your own accommodation locally. There are a large number of local AirB&Bs. Limited accommodation at our fieldstudy centre in the Woods is also available for those booking early in advance. Usually firing teams cook and eat communally on site, which we will arrange nearer the time. For help and advice, contact Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Kilns.

CARRION CROW - Heather Parry in conversation with Lara Williams | Blackwell's Bookshop
Mar 19, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
We can't wait to welcome Heather Parry to the shop to discussion her claustrophobic, captivating new novel CARRION CROW,about a young woman locked away in the attic to preserve her family's name. Heather will be in conversation with Lara Williams, author of Supper Club and The Odyssey. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: There are some facts about the world that only your mother can teach you.
Marguerite had been confined for the sake of her wellbeing.
That's what her mother had said.
Marguerite Périgord is locked in the attic of her family home, a towering Chelsea house overlooking the stinking Thames. Her mother is concerned that Marguerite's engagement to a much older, near-penniless solicitor, will drag the family name into disrepute and this simply won't do. For company Marguerite has a sewing machine, Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management and a carrion crow who has come to nest in the rafters. Restless, she spends her waning energies on the fascinations of her own body, memorising Mrs Beeton's advice and longing for her life outside. As Marguerite's patience turns into rage, the boundaries of her mind and body start to fray. Probably one of the best books I've read this year! It felt like an unholy mix of Ottessa Moshfegh and Leonora Carrington, whilst still being very much its own thing … I loved it - Julia Armfield, author of Private Rites and Our Wives Under The Sea About the author: Heather Parry is a Glasgow-based writer and editor, originally from South Yorkshire. Her debut novel, Orpheus Builds a Girl, was shortlisted for the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year Award and longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize. She is also the author of a short story collection, This Is My Body, Given For You, and her first nonfiction book, Electric Dreams: On Sex Robots and the Failed Promises of Capitalism, was released in 2024 as part of 404 Ink’s Inklings series. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new. Support your local bookshop and help us keep the Manchester literary scene vibrant and exciting. Make Art: Manchester | The Whitworth
Mar 14, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Make Art: Manchester is a free in-person art group is an opportunity to connect with other artists in a relaxed and creative space. Make Art is a place to talk about art, life, and creativity, hatch new ideas and explore your potential as an artist. The group is facilitated by two Outside In ambassadors, so is both by and for the community of artists who face major barriers to the mainstream art world. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own creative projects to work on, in a communal space. We will always have some art materials on hand for those who wish to try something new. The idea of Make Art sessions is to develop a community of artists, particularly those more prone to isolation. What art you choose to make during the session will always be up to you, and as facilitators, we will take direction from the wider community as to what direction to take the sessions as the group develops. For those who work better with some structure, we will set a theme for each session, which attendees can choose to work to or simply ignore. For example, January’s theme will be ‘Inspiration – What inspires you?’ Artists are welcome to bring along and work in any and all materials, provided that they are appropriately contained on the way into the art room, i.e. in bags, boxes or other suitable containers. Art materials are not permitted to be carried through the main gallery, so we ask that all our attendees use the step-free entrance at the back of the building. This group is open to people regardless of skill level, how long you’ve been creating, or what your background is. Even if you don’t feel like you can call yourself an ‘artist’, for whatever reason, but you want to get crafty in a room with some other people, then we’re here for you. You do not need to be a member of Outside In to attend the group, so long as you meet Outside In’s criteria of facing barriers to the art world, whether that is through isolation, disability, mental illness, or social circumstances. If you are unsure, you can always get in touch. Places are very limited, so please book your ticket in advance. If it is showing as sold out on Eventbrite, there may still be places available - email Beth Hopkins Community Development Manager at beth.hopkins@outsidein.org.uk to find out. Please let Beth know if you have any access requirements, for example disabled parking, a quiet break out space, or to bring someone with you for support. Come along to meet other artists and make art! About Outside In Outside In works with artists who encounter barriers to the artworld due to health, disability, and social circumstance. You can find out more on our website: outsidein.org.uk. You do not need to already be an Outside In artist to take part, but you do need to face barriers to the art world. If you're unsure please get in touch with Beth to talk it through. Accessibility We aim to make the group as accessible as possible for everyone coming. Everyone's needs are different, so if you have requirements please get in touch with Beth at beth.hopkins@outsidein.org.uk to let us know how we can make sure the session works for you. For example, you might need a quiet breakout space, space for an electric wheelchair or walker, guide dogs, and you are also welcome to bring someone with you for support (please book a place for them too). You can read more about accessibility at the Whitworth here: whitworth.manchester.ac.uk/visit/access. We will be using a private room on the ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. We will be providing labels for name badges and traffic light stickers for communication interaction at every session. More information here: stimpunks.org/access/interaction.Attendees are welcome to bring PAs/carers.Gender-neutral and accessible toilets are across the hall from the room we will be using. The nearest Changing Places toilet is at Manchester University, just further down Oxford Road.Refreshments will be provided. We are always open to both questions and feedback on accessibility.Directions Follow signs for step-free access to The Whitworth on Denmark Road.
