Arts Film
Join the red-carpet premiere of The Success of Moss Side (an SNE Studios Production, directed by Elmi Ali and produced by Baka Bah ) – a brand-new documentary framed through the lens of a young filmmaker. Moss Side, an inner-city Manchester neighbourhood, is often reduced to external perceptions of crime, violence and poverty. While these challenges exist, such narratives overshadow the vibrant, multifaceted reality cherished by its residents. The Success of Moss Side dismantles the dominant narrative through intimate community portraits: a football coach nurturing dreams, a mother channelling grief into activism, and a music producer weaving the area’s soul into sound. Together, they reveal a Moss Side that headlines ignore – a place of resilience, creativity and unyielding pride. Co-founded by Baka Bah, SNE Studios is a creative and community-driven media organization with a vision to give people the tools and platform to tell their own stories. Throughout the event, enjoy street food stalls from local vendors, a chance for photographs and a live DJ. After the screening, listen to a panel discussion with Baka Bah and youth ambassadors plus support an Awards Ceremony for community leaders. 10% of ticket sale profits will go towards Families Against Violence and the Salaam Community Association. Arts Fine Art
For over three decades Len Grant documented the regeneration of Manchester and Salford as a freelance documentary photographer. He made books and exhibitions about the construction of key buildings during the 90s and early 2000s and went on to chronicle neighbourhood renewal particularly in east Manchester. Having never drawn as an adult he discovered urban sketching in 2013 and has since gradually swapped his camera for a sketchbook and pen. He now uses drawing as a way of telling stories about his city and can often be spotted perched on his little stool at a road junction or inside a local bar. October sees the publication of ‘Len Grant’s Chorlton Sketchbook’, the fourth book in what he calls his neighbourhood series focussing on different city suburbs. This 104-page sketchbook includes dozens of Len’s idiosyncratic drawings, many accompanied by short commentaries on his sketching adventures. Concerts Hip-Hop/Rap
Join us for a special Listening Party with writer and curator Alvin Li, exploring the vibrant and contested terrain of Chinese hip-hop through the lens of multilingualism, identity, and resistance. Drawing from his essay West Side Stories —published in the Slavs and Tatars-led volume The Contest of the Fruits —Li takes us on a journey through the evolution of rap in mainland China and the Uighur region of Xinjiang. Focusing on how Uighur rappers navigate linguistic hybridity and regional identity within complex sociopolitical conditions, Li presents selected tracks alongside commentary that considers rap as a space for affiliation, storytelling, and resilience. From early underground collectives to the breakout moments of national reality television, this session listens closely to the layered narratives encoded in beat and verse. “Many rappers from Xinjiang have adopted the term ‘West Side’—not in Uighur or Chinese, but in English—to refer to their home. A clear homage to West Coast hip-hop, this choice signals the global imagination at the heart of Uighur rappers’ efforts to forge a strong regional identity.”— Alvin Li, West Side Stories This Listening Party is presented as part of the public programme for Slavs and Tatars: The Contest of the Fruits at esea contemporary, and continues the exhibition’s engagement with language politics, humour, and the subversive potential of vernacular culture. About esea contemporary esea contemporary is the UK’s only non-profit art centre specialising in presenting and platforming artists and art practices that identify with and are informed by East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) cultural backgrounds. esea contemporary is situated in an award-winning building in the heart of Manchester, home to one of the largest East Asian populations in the UK. We are delighted to welcome authors Jennifer Delaney and Rachel Grosvenor to a very special event at Deansgate, celebrating their respective new witchy releases; Tales of a Deadly Devotion and Witchborne . The pair will be discussing their work and answeringt audience questions, followed by a signing. Author Rachel Grosvenor will be bringing along her favourite Medieval outfits and props, for audience members wanting to immerse themselves and take some quirky photos. About Tales of a Deadly Devotion From the author of instant Sunday Times bestseller Tales of a Monstrous Heart, comes a spellbinding new dark fantasy filled with gothic romance and forbidden magic - perfect for readers of Sarah J Maas and Rachel Gillig. DARKNESS ALWAYS FINDS ITS WAY BACK. As Fey wage hopeless war against the oncoming storm of mortal conquest, Fairfax Manor lies in ruins. The first witches of Blackthorn forged the ancient fortress from their very souls to keep those of their bloodline safe. No one is safe now. Katherine Woodrow might have survived persecution at the Institute of Magic and journeyed across the divided lands of Elysior to study magic with the legendary Lord Emrys Blackthorn himself, but losing her heart and almost her life wasn't on the curriculum. All magic has a price - a price Alma would rather have died than see Kat pay. But the dark isn't finished with Kat yet. And Alma will stop at nothing to save her, drawing on the power of the beasts that simmer beneath her skin and even facing the secrets of her own past to help her friend. And there's no time to lose. Because more demons are escaping from the cursed texts the mortals failed to guard. The world is slipping back into darkness. And something is returning... About Witchborne FROM THE AUTHOR OF 'THE FINERY' COMES A BLAZING FEMINIST TALE OF PERSECUTION AND MAGIC... In medieval Locklear, Agnes harbours a dangerous secret—she can touch fire without being burned. As war rages beyond the town and whispers of witchcraft echo through its streets, Agnes navigates arranged marriages, rivals' schemes, and the threat of the hangman's noose. When a desperate bargain with a local widow goes awry, Agnes's world erupts in flames—she is accused of witchcraft. In a society that fears female power, can Agnes find the strength to forge her own destiny? Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Let's talk about what really matters. Connecting a diverse design crowd, united by the matters that matter to us all. Guest speakers share their stories and experiences across design leadership, thought-provoking inspiration, culture, vision, and future-defining creativity. Doors 6:30pm. First speaker 7pm. Our Speakers Chris Nott & William Richardson: Founders of Studio Drama ' Welcome to the age of typographic distinction' We’re entering a new age...one where brands can’t afford to sound the same, let alone look the same. As the dust settles on BLANDING a bolder future is emerging: one defined by typographic distinction. Custom type is fast becoming one of the most strategic, expressive tools in the branding arsenal. Drawing on their experience designing typefaces for Mozilla, Heinz, Vogue, and more, they’ll share how bespoke typography strengthens brand ecosystems, drives recognition, and opens up new creative territory. With ideas that challenge default thinking, this talk will arm you with a new perspective on type: beyond a design detail, as brand-defining infrastructure. Barrington Reeves: Creative Director & Founder of Too Gallus ' Standing for Something Sets You Apart' Barrington explores what it actually means to forge your own path as a creative, no matter your background, beliefs, or discipline. How can building outspoken values into your business attract the most sought-after clients in the world? Too Gallus proves that luxury and integrity go hand in hand, with a client list that includes Chanel, Rox Jewellers, Glenrothes, and Pandora. Reject industry expectations and carve out a lane that’s yours, without compromising your values or silencing your voice. Taking a strong stance; politically, ethically, and creatively, can be a powerful asset. This talk also shines a light on the value of thriving outside London, celebrating rich local talent, and asking how we can raise creative standards to become true equals within the industry. Make “not fitting in” your greatest advantage. - Speaker 3: Announced soon - Common Interest is brought to you by Craft . Craft is a global design recruitment company with a simple ambition: to enhance the studios, careers, and lives of everybody we partner with.
