Ignore the rules: Improv intensive with Patti Stiles | The Exchange (Communify Qld)

Feb 1, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Grove
Arts
Comedy
This one day workshop with Patt Stiles will explore her philosophy of improvisation – that we should not be constrained by the ‘so-called’ rules of improvisation but should instead approach work courageously and authentically. The workshop will focus on two core techniques which are central to her approach to the work – embracing failure in a meaningful way and using improvisation to tell stories. The aim is not to teach participants the right way to do a scene, but to instead give you the tools you need to tell the stories you want to tell. Patti will show you how to apply these techniques to your scenework and to improvise more confidently and playfully in future. Patti will also use the opportunity of the extended format to provide you with kind but no nonsense feedback aimed at helping you grow as a performer. We recommend booking as soon as possible as numbers are strictly limited. Eligibility The class is aimed at participants with some improvisation experience. You must have completed at least two workshops with Improv Queensland (or have completed equivalent training with another improvisation school) in order to register. About your teacher Patti is an actor, director, author, playwright and teacher who specialises in improvisational theatre. She is a former Artistic Director of Rapid Fire Theatre (CA), Dream Kitchen Theatre (CA), Impro Melbourne (AU) and the International Theatresports Institute (CA), and a founding member of the award winning Die Nasty – the live improvised soap opera (CA). Her tutelage and mentorship has strongly influenced many improvisors and improvisation companies all over the world. Such as Rapid Fire Theatre (CA), Impro Melbourne (AU), Spontaneity Shop (UK), Closer Each Day (UK), Smoking Sofa (FR), Teatro A Molla (IT) and I Bugardini (IT), B.L.U.E – the musical (IT), Courtyard Playhouse (UAE) and the award winning Austentacious (UK). In 2021 she released her first book Improvise Freely. It has received an enthusiastic response from improvisors, teachers and impro companies around the globe. In 2022 it was translated into Italian. Patti has been featured on the cover of the Spanish impro magazine Status; she is a contributor to the book The Art of Making Mistakes and has been interviewed for the books Something Like A Drug and The Improv Handbook (which is dedicated to Patti in recognition of her mentorship.) She has been interviewed for numerous podcasts and University papers and her blog has been translated into French, Italian, German and Portuguese. Adding to her list of credits are three nominations for an Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award, plus she holds the unofficial record for being the first female to improvise for 53 hours in a row in the famous Die Nasty soap a thon. Then try our free taster workshop! This fun and friendly workshop is designed to give you a quick taste of what our improv classes have to offer. We will run through some basic improv activities and show you what we love so much about improvisation. Plus it's a chance to meet and get to know our wonderful teachers. Best of all - it's free! Age requirement Please note: Our classes are primarily aimed at adults - if you are under 18, let us know and we will confirm if you can attend the class. What is improvisation? Improvisation is any performance where there has been no pre-planning: where there is no script or any detailed outline for the show. However, improv is more than simply the absence of these things. It also represents a process and a philosophy of communication, creativity and connection. It is these skills and ideas which allow performers to work with each other, in the moment, to create amazing and wonderful scenes. Why learn improv? Improv is a fun, challenging art-form which teaches skills which are useful both in everyday life and performance. Improv is invaluable for actors or creatives who want to be faster on their feet and explore their creative processes. It's also valuable for non-performers as it teaches skills relating to communication, confidence and teamwork. Plus, it's fun! Improv is an incredibly accessible art-form, and a well-designed beginner's class will feel friendly and be enjoyable for people from all backgrounds and levels of experience. Why learn with Improv Queensland? We have been teaching people to improvise for over 15 years and have the longest running improvised training programme in Brisbane. We have taught hundreds of people how to improvise, including actors, comedians, caberet artists, CEOs, doctors, barristers, miners, and teachers. Our beginner’s curriculum is a tried and tested product which will give you an excellent introduction to improvisation. We also provide well-regarded intermediate and advanced workshops which provide opportunities for students to take their improvisation further. We also have Brisbane’s most experienced improvisation teachers, with our teachers generally having many years of performance and teaching under their belts. We also operate a constant process of professional development for our teachers including in-house training, feedback sessions and external workshops. Woodmore is a celebrated composer, educator, and community leader whose work has shaped the intersection of music, theater, and social justice. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Woodmore is the author of Antigone in Ferguson: A Journey Through the Transformative Power of Music, a reflective work on using art to foster dialogue and healing. He is widely recognized for his compositions and productions, including Antigone in Ferguson, which brought Sophocles’ tragedy to life through gospel music, and Team M, an original musical addressing mental health in communities of color. With 20 years of experience teaching middle school choir and leadership roles at the Center of Creative Arts (COCA) in St. Louis, Dr. Woodmore has dedicated his career to empowering young voices. His passion for community engagement has led him to collaborations with Theater of War Productions, performances with Little Amal, and work with civic leaders to use music as a tool for unity and resilience. Dr. Woodmore’s workshops and projects inspire participants to connect deeply with their communities and discover the transformative power of the arts. www.philipawoodmore.com Philip and Together Productions have been collaborating since 2020, initially as part of the Twilight Sessions, a ground-breaking online workshop series featuring internationally renowned vocal artists and musical experts, and subsequently on the Singing Our Lives programme in 2022, an international collaboration which resulted in a new global composition. About Together Productions: Together Productions is a ground-breaking social change organisation based in the UK. We produce innovative collaborative arts projects that connect people, organisations and audiences across social and cultural divides. We use music and the arts as a catalyst to break down barriers, reduce isolation and enhance well-being. We produce high quality artistic work that is grown through creative collaboration, participation and experimentation. Our work includes those who are marginalised or excluded, such as displaced people and those seeking sanctuary, people facing mental health challenges, the elderly, the financially disadvantaged and socially excluded. We know that choirs are an incredible way to build community, improve mental health and build empathy and therefore choral singing is a big part of our work. About Singing Our Lives: This event is part of Singing Our Lives, a ground-breaking project bringing displaced people and those seeking sanctuary and local communities together with professional musicians to explore stories, to create new work and perform together. Conceived and developed by Together Productions, Singing Our Lives (SOL) has attracted partners including the Royal Opera House, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the International Organization for Migration, amongst many others. Initially a one off project in 2017, Singing Our Lives has become a rolling programme which celebrates diversity and solidarity through singing and creativity. SOL has pioneered a unique collaborative dialogue and composition process that results in powerful new works reflecting the culture and experiences of hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds across the UK and beyond.
