Cecilia Vicuña: Quipu Gut | Pérez Art Museum Miami
Aug 29, 2024–Aug 3, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
Cecilia Vicuña is a poet and artist who grew up in the Chilean commune of La Florida, in the Maipo Valley. Born to a family of artists and intellectuals, Vicuña grew up hearing about the persecution and incarceration of individuals who struggled for social justice in the wake of increasingly conservative government agendas. While attending the Slade School of Fine Art in London on a British Council Award in 1972–73, a coup d’état led by General Augusto Pinochet, commander-in-chief of the Chilean army, ushered in a seventeen-year military dictatorship. This led Vicuña to remain in London on a self-imposed exile, where she exhibited her work at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and published her first book, Saborami (1973). At the time, she was largely focused on political activism directed against fascism and human rights violations in Chile and other countries.
One Becomes Many | Pérez Art Museum Miami
Oct 17, 2024–Apr 16, 2026 (UTC-5)
Miami
One Becomes Many explores the enduring legacies that transcend generations in the works of ten Black Brazilian artists. Through traditional motifs, geometric abstractions, and a deep reverence for Brazilian culture, these artists offer glimpses into a world where resilience is not merely a trait but a sacred inheritance.
Central to the exhibition is candomblé—the Afro-Brazilian religion that draws on traditions of West African ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, Fon, and Bantu, as well as some aspects Roman Catholicism. Inspired by ritual practices, these artists pay homage to deities and ancestral spirits, exuding divine potency and wisdom in their works. The reimagined symbolic imagery from candomblé serves as a visual testament to the strength of a people who have endured, persisted, and thrived.
José Parlá: Homecoming | Pérez Art Museum Miami
Nov 14, 2024–Jul 6, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
Born in Miami to Cuban parents, artist José Parlá (b. 1973, Miami; lives in New York) was raised between mainland United States and Puerto Rico. Influenced by his proximity to Caribbean and Latin American countries, he developed an interest in diverse cultural traits, including Cuban music, hip hop, reggae, calligraphy, dance, and urban architecture and its decay, all of which would become recurring themes in his work. Consistent with his blended culture, Parlá is interested in hybrid forms of abstraction. Through a unique mark-making process, grounded in movement and bodily gestures, Parlá produces a painterly stream of consciousness characterized by addition, erasure, and layering. His physical and textural artistic process challenges conventional visual culture.
Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is honored to be hosting Parlá’s first solo museum exhibition in his hometown. Featuring a new series of never-before-seen works and a site-specific mural, José Parlá: Homecoming will ultimately mirror the artist’s studio. An elaborate, two-part exhibition will allow visitors to observe Parlá’s dance-like technique in real time as he paints a site-specific mural for the first iteration of the exhibition. The second iteration will see the museum gallery transformed and converted into Parlá’s studio—a room full of paint-covered tables, a lively Cuban-inspired record collection, and decades of Parla’s archival memorabilia.
In 2021, Parlá contracted a life-threatening case of COVID-19—he was hospitalized and endured a four-month coma during which he suffered a stroke and significant brain bleeding. A radical departure from the traditional use of space in a museum, this presentation not only represents a homecoming to Miami, but also marks a return to himself and his practice after this experience. Celebrating the spirit of resilience and returning to one’s roots, José Parlá: Homecoming is a testament to the profound connections among personal history, art, and creative expression. In addition to the completed mural and studio re-creation, the exhibition will also feature a number of recent works Parlá created upon his return to painting. The result is a process-focused exhibition highlighting an expressionistic painter who conscientiously engages with issues relating to Cuban and broader diasporic identity.
Gyula Kosice: Intergalactic | Pérez Art Museum Miami
Mar 20–Sep 7, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
One hundred years after his birth, Gyula Kosice: Intergalactic celebrates the career of the Argentine artist Gyula Kosice (b. 1924, Košice, Czechoslovakia; d. 2016, Buenos Aires, Argentina), an experimental artist, sculptor, poet, and theorist. Co-founder of Arturo (1944) and Madí (1946), two constructive art groups that were centered in the Río de la Plata region between Uruguay and Argentina, he was also a prominent figure in the international avant-garde after 1945. His practice introduced original artistic ideas, such as interactive sculptures, which questioned the relationship between the art object and the spectator and experimented with a wide range of materials, many of which had never been used in art before.
Like Julio Le Parc and Carlos Cruz-Diez, he incorporated light and motion yet, was one of the first to incorporate water in his works. Intergalactic focuses on his experimental production, in which motion was a constant and essential feature. It includes works that he created between 1950 and 1980, such as acrylic sculptures, kinetic reliefs, and drops of water, most of which incorporated lights and were activated by aerators and motors.
The exhibition features Gyula Kosice’s most ambitious work, The Hydrospatial City (1946–2004), an experiential installation comprised of architectural prototypes that speculate on the possibility of human settlement beyond Earth brought on by socioeconomic inequality, environmental degradation, and astronomical population growth. As an alternative, he proposed a city of semi-open, modular habitats suspended 5000 feet above the ground and powered by oxygen and hydrogen harnessed from water vapor in the clouds.
Hurvin Anderson: Passenger Opportunity | Pérez Art Museum Miami
Nov 21, 2024–Aug 17, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
Inspired
by the murals of Carl Abrahams lining the departures lounge of Kingston
Jamaica’s Norman Manley International Airport, Hurvin Anderson presents
a new, sixteen-panel, monumental painting in his first solo show at
Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Mining the space between abstraction and representation in painting,
Anderson creates art that is at once steeped in history but also acutely
contemporary. Born in Birmingham, England to Jamaican parents of the
Windrush Generation, a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London,
Anderson’s paintings are grounded in the universal spaces and visual
archive of the landscape tradition so much a part of the history of
modern western art. Yet, as is demonstrated here, he is also an explorer
of what those histories mean in the African diaspora and, more
specifically, within the cultural and social traditions of the
Caribbean.
In 2022, Anderson participated in the Kingston Biennial. While working
on that project, he traveled to and from Jamaica through Miami; coming
face-to-face with the two murals Abrahams painted on Jamaican history
for the airport in 1985. During this time, Abrahams’s murals began
resonating with Anderson in a different way. Reflecting on the
importance of Jamaican history, and the rich history of the Caribbean as
a whole, Anderson began working on ideas for this show while taking
these trips. Thinking of what these historical murals mean for
immigration, but also as a point of entry and departure for tourism,
Anderson developed this new sixteen-panel painting.

Visitors are encouraged to return to experience the works individually. Each video takes viewers on a journey through alternate realities where the boundaries between the real, the virtual, and the imagined blur. Collectively, the works examine how constructed worlds—whether simulated, cultural, or mythological—shape our understanding of identity, space, and power.

Hampton Art Lovers Presents | Movies Under a Simple Tree : "Deep City" | Historic Ward Rooming House
Apr 25, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Miami
Join us for a monthly screening of Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound and a gallery night featuring One Night Stand: Photography by Greg Clark. Presented in Partnership with Open House Miami: Open House Miami is part of a global effort to make cities more open, accessible, and equitable by providing unique views and perspectives to residents and visitors. So bring your lawn chair and refreshments for this low-key community movie night. The influence of Overtown on American music is significant, and this event commemorates that legacy. Greg Clark's photography captures the local musicians of Overtown, highlighting the allure that attracted music legends like Sam Cooke. His intimate portraits depict musicians with their instruments against the backdrop of empty lots and repurposed buildings that were once prominent entertainment venues in the area. This event is sponsored by OneUnited Bank, the S.E. Overtown/Park West CRA, and the Green Family Foundation. The event is co-sponsored by Impact Edition, the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs, and Crown Street Films. Long before the Miami Sound became a well-known brand, there existed a unique musical scene in Miami that Deep City Records represented as its Motown. The documentary film Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound, directed and produced by local filmmakers, documents and highlights Miami's central role in American music history. This vibrant music scene emerged in the mid-1960s, characterized by the soul and funk sounds that only Miami could produce. It was raw and gritty, rooted in the sacred grooves of African-American church life and street culture, influenced by the bold sounds of marching bands, and enriched by the lilting cadences of Caribbean music. Deep City Records was founded by two school teachers, Willie Clarke and the late Johnny Pearsall, who became friends while attending Florida A&M University. Clarke, an art education major and the lead drummer in the school's renowned Marching 100 band had a knack for writing lyrics and melodies. Pearsall, a business education major, did not play an instrument but had an ear for the latest hit records. Back in Miami, they established Deep City Records in the back room of Pearsall’s record shop, Johnny’s Records, located at NW 60th Street and 22nd Avenue in Liberty City. Deep City became Florida's first Black-owned record label. The documentary is set against the backdrop of a vibrant Overtown, once the center of African-American life in Miami. “It was beautiful—neon lights stretched from one end of the street to the other. Second Avenue looked like Hollywood,” recalls Clarke in the film. Throughout, Overtown plays a significant role in the story. “It was vital for us to showcase black American life in the 1960s in the South, particularly in Miami, in a positive light,” Johnson explains. “During our research, we uncovered archival footage that vividly depicted Black people in Overtown, surrounded by businesses, walking the streets with dignity. This became an important aspect of the film, almost a subplot to the main story.” The label showcased local talent, including Clarke, his songwriting partner and singer Clarence “Blowfly” Reid, guitarist and singer Willie “Little Beaver” Hale, and singer Betty Wright, along with groups such as The Moovers, Them Two (a vocal duo), and Frank Williams & the Rocketeers. The music produced by Deep City was exceptional; however, by the late 1960s, challenges such as lack of funding, distribution issues, and disagreements among the partners about the label's direction led to its decline. In the early 1970s, Clarke and several Deep City artists found renewed success beyond Florida with Henry Stone’s TK Records, where Clarke became a globally recognized hit-maker, even winning a Grammy in 1975 for “Where Is the Love,” sung by Betty Wright. Ultimately, “Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound” narrates a musical journey while also shedding light on the community and its history. In fast-changing Miami, reminders of its past hold critical importance. “Miami has a brief history, and I’ve always been fascinated by how it unfolded in such a short time,” Tingle says, who chose to make Miami his home. Originally from Jamaica, he moved to New York at age 10. After attending college in Miami, he has lived in South Florida for nearly 20 years. “When people think about Miami's music history, they might consider artists like KC or Luther Campbell, or even jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius. But this is where it all started. Overtown and Deep City are the foundation.”
