Eventually, the American Legion Department of Idaho Post 56 nonprofit veteran’s organization took over the reins. In recent years, the City of Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Department bought the Rodeo. Over the years, the rodeo has been held at various locations including Tautphaus Park, and is now held at Sandy Downs, a city-owned facility. Today, more than 500 cowboys and cowgirls compete each summer in front of more than 15,000 rodeo enthusiasts. The Legion grew the widely popular event into the show it is today and for that, we are forever grateful. The City of Idaho Falls and the Parks & Recreation Department runs this historic rodeo, and we are honored to have the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Fort Hall participating. From the beginning, the tribes provided the most colorful component of the rodeo, making the War Bonnet Round Up an important part of eastern Idaho’s culture and tradition. Mud is the Way Time to get down and dirty at Sandy Downs in Idaho Falls! On August 16, 2025 at 10:00 am, 11:00 am, or 12:00 pm. We will be taking Grit League's kid friendly obstacles and adding lots and lots of MUD for a Fun Run Obstacle Course for all ages and abilities!!! W e will have 3 open heats at 10:00am, 11:00 am and Noon. The open heat course will be about 1/2 mile long. You will have 45 minutes to complete as many laps as you can and you will earn a raffle ticket for each lap you complete. For Open heats you can help and have help and just try your best on obstacles. This is great for all ages and abilities. Cost is $20 for an Individual Entry. There is also an Family Pass Option for $50.00 (must be immediate family or college roommates/Family Home Evening Groups, up to 10 people) Cost goes up if registering the day of to $25 for Individuals, and $60 for the Family Pass . Grit League kids get a free entry, or Grit League families can get a $15 discount off of a Family Pass so that parents/siblings can run with them. You'll want to follow Grit League's facebook page because we'll have lots of pictures of the event! Spectators and parking are free! So if you just want to see a bunch of people getting muddy, come by and check it out. Wild and crazy costumes are welcome and encouraged for this event, as long as they are family friendly! And don't forget to bring a towel and a change of clothes because you will get muddy! We will have some hoses to get you cleaned off a bit, but expect a bit of a wait and to not get all the way clean. A good strategy seems to be to bring some plastic bags/towels to line your seats. With three open heats at 10:00 am, 11:00 am, and Noon, participants can test their skills on a half-mile course, earning raffle tickets for each lap completed.
