Since 1979, Brand X Editions has pushed the boundaries of screenprinting and its expressive possibilities in their partnerships with emerging and established contemporary artists, from Helen Frankenthaler and Alex Katz to Rashid Johnson and Emily Mae Smith.This exhibition celebrates the transformative gift of the Brand X archive of over 400 screenprints to the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Sharing 45 years of collaborative work between founder Robert Blanton (and his team of printers and chromists) and a constellation of artists, this show will address subjects relating to identity, language, design, landscape, and politics while exploring artistic process and innovative technique.

The installation highlights picture frames as works of art in their own right, exploring their shifting forms and functions from the altar-like frames of the Renaissance to the experimental, artist-designed frames of the late 1800s. It will include 13 frames from the Johnson Collection, which, together, express the craftsmanship and variety of European frames through the centuries.

The 1940s witnessed major shifts in politics, science, economics, industry, the arts, and culture, which coincided with a time of scarcity, limitation, and the catastrophic global conflict of World War II. Throughout this tumultuous period, artists brought new ideas to their work across media, from fashion and textiles, craft and design, to printmaking, drawing, photography, painting, and sculpture. Boom: Art and Design in the 1940s will be a testament to the creative spirit that flourished despite the restrictions and adversity of the era. This exhibition will showcase art from across the decade, featuring works drawn entirely from the museum’s permanent collections.
