Bibi Rukiya Performance Forum Lab – Birmingham Amina Khayyam Dance Company's third instalment of the Women-Only Performance Forum will be held on Thursday 8th May 2025 at the Patrick Studio, Birmingham Hippodrome – three weeks before the main production – 22nd/23rd May 2025. AKDC ‘s Performance Forums enable and manifest the theme of the production on those on whom it is targeted; engaging professional artists with ordinary, the least engaged – women to be creatively expressive and enabled. The Birmingham Performance Forum culminates in the work of seven women's groups and four girls' schools, who have come together weekly over 26 workshops from January to April, with a break in March due to Ramadan. With over 170 participants, this gathering is a testament to the power of collaboration, connection, and empowerment that embodies AKDC’s work. In this edition, a short excerpt of BiBi Rukiya’s Reckless Daughter will be presented. It draws inspiration from The House of Bernarda Alba by Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca. This powerful reimagining explores themes of control, repression, and liberation, echoing the intense emotional drama of Lorca’s classic, while adding a contemporary sensitivity that resonates with today’s audiences. Through the lens of Kathak dance with its storytelling vocabulary and movement, BiBi Rukiya’s Reckless Daughter examines the complexities of familial relationships, societal expectations, and the personal desire for freedom. Here, in the professional space of Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio, with over 170 participants, these women and girls share their stories, perspectives, and creative experiences from the culmination of three months of workshops. These women and girls have created a space to amplify their voices, challenge boundaries, and showcase their unique stories. AKDC proudly honours this remarkable journey, as the performance forum not only reflects individual creativity and talent but fosters a collective spirit of community and solidarity. On this special event, the stage will come alive with the vibrant energy of women supporting women, affirming the power and beauty of womanhood, including short excerpts of the performance of BiBi Rukiya’s Reckless Daughter adding depth to this celebration, inviting audiences to reflect on the challenges and triumphs of the women who have walked this path before us. It will be a unique inter-generational event, where young women will see their mothers dancing and become role-models – a celebration of the strength, resilience, and creativity of women and girls. Jasper has been great supporter of the charity for many years and was recently appointed a life vice president. He said: “If I am still alive by May 2nd, it will be my pleasure to entertain many close friends from the world of journalism and entertainment. “Nothing is planned so nothing can go wrong? I am so looking forward to it I have bought a new bib and a pair of socks. Come and join me, I would dearly love to see you all. “ Derek Inman, chairman of the charity’s Midlands District, said: “Jasper at 80 – what a milestone. He is a true legend, One of the funniest comics the region has ever produced. It is a real honour that he has chosen to celebrate this special occasion with us.” Jasper, described by Jeremy Clarkson as “easily the funniest stand-up I’ve ever seen”, has enjoyed a career spanning five decades which reads like a history of comedy classics. Among his many accolades are BBC TV Personality of the Year, a Gold Medal at the New York TV and Film Awards, Midlander of the Year Award, his own ‘Star’ on Birmingham’s Walk of Stars and the British Comedy Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. In recognition of his outstanding work for charity, Jasper was awarded an OBE in Her Majesty’s New Year’s Honours List in 2003. Robert Norman Davis was born in Shaftmoor Lane, Acocks Green, in Birmingham, and educated at Acocks Green Primary School and Moseley Grammar School. He worked as a trainee buyer at a city centre department store, with schoolmate Bev Bevan, who didn’t do badly for himself either, the musician featuring in the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Black Sabbath. Acquiring the nickname Jasper aged nine, the aspiring entertainer added Carrott when he was 17, a stage name that has done him proud, supporting an ever-burgeoning talent that has seen him perform to packed audiences worldwide. Other eclectic works have included hit single Funky Moped and being part-owner of the production company Celador, makers of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, until selling out some years ago. He and his wife Hazel, a former journalist herself, have four children and a home in the Warwickshire countryside. Information Source: Journalists' Charity | eventbrite

The coordinator will also give you our bank details if you have chosen to pay the coach fare by bank transfer. Please check your email, including Spam and/or Junk folders, shortly after bookings have closed for this walk and reply to let us know whether or not you will be still joining the walk. Please note that some walks have a waiting list so tickets are NOT TRANSFERABLE; if you are unable to join us then please cancel your place to free it up for someone who may be on the waiting list rather than sending someone else in your place.
