For anyone interested in sound, art and DIY electronics! _ABOUT Surface Reader is a DIY device that allows users to extract sounds from their surroundings. The device is battery-powered, portable and worn on the wrist. During the workshop, participants will be able to assemble their own device in a simple way: without soldering, using only hot glue and connecting wires. The workshop is accessible to all skill levels and does not require any knowledge of electronics. After assembly, all participants gather together for a walk with their devices and a joint exploration of the surfaces of the building/city. Using a contact microphone, it is possible to listen to the different textures sounding from the device, from tree bark to asphalt. Surface Reader helps to see reality from a new perspective, shifting the focus of attention from visual perception of the environment to sound. Each participant can keep their device for further experiments. _WORKSHOP SCHEDULE (2 HOURS): 1 hour - joint assembly of devices. All stages of assembly are demonstrated in a presentation on a projector/TV; 1 hour - joint walk with devices, discussion of experiences. Information Source: Soundplay Projects | eventbrite

In their new book Unfinished Business , Henry McLeish and Professor James Mitchell dissect the record of the first 25 years of devolution and, ahead of the Scottish elections in 2026, set out their ideas on how to improve Scottish democracy over the coming decade. It examines successes as well as failures but concludes that while Scotland has talked a great game on its “progressive values”, real change has proven to be elusive. They are joined on a panel by Johann Lamont, the former leader of the Scottish Labour party, and Annemarie Ward, CEO of FAVOR UK which represents the voices of communities affected by addiction. Join us from 6:30pm till late on 27 August for what it sure to be a lively, provocative, and challenging debate on the choices Scotland needs to take to get the outcomes it says it wants. Please note that filming/photography will be taking place during this event for promotional and archival purposes. Images and recordings may be used on our website or in other promotional materials. Musical Arts
Singer/songwriter Josh Garrels has built his career on deeply personal, introspective lyrics and exploratory sounds that range from pastoral indie folk to hip-hop. Born in 1980 in South Bend, Indiana, Garrels initially played in punk bands as a teenager and also fell under the spell of East Coast hip hop. In his early twenties, he came into the Christian faith, which became a major thread in his musical journey. With his rich “wooly” voice, he began to explore his own folk-based sound, sometimes rapping, sometimes crooning his complex but approachable songs. On his own Small Voice Records, he began releasing records with Over Oceans in 2006, Jacaranda in 2008.
In 2011, he released the elaborate double album Love & War & the Sea in Between which was influenced by his adopted home of Portland, Oregon. The album was praised by both Christian and secular media as a career milestone for Garrels, being named Christianity Todays album of the year, and TGC’s album of the decade. He’s had a number of songs placed on TV shows including Netflix’ Virgin River, CBS' The Ghost Whisperer, ESPN's Outside the Lines. In 2015 he released Home which landed at number 19 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart and 83 on the Billboard 200. The following year saw the release of the holiday-themed The Light Came Down. In 2019, he issued Chrysaline, which he co-produced with Isaac Wardell. In 2021 Garrels took a year long sabbatical on his Michigan farm, and now, he’s currently creating new work.  Information Source: Josh Garrels | eventbrite
