Our flagship Bacon and Eggheads breakfast series returns for the 2025–2026 parliamentary season, thanks to the generous support of the Speakers of the House of Commons and the Senate. We are delighted to launch the season with our first talk on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Please find the event details below. Through the Melting Ice: Ship Traffic in Canada's Arctic Jackie Dawson, University of Ottawa Rapid decline in sea ice extent and thickness due to climate change is occurring much more quickly than predicted. Recent studies suggest that the Arctic Ocean will be seasonally sea ice-free (<1 million km²) well before 2050, regardless of any mitigation efforts. To put the magnitude of this change into perspective, a sea ice-free Arctic has not occurred since the last interglacial period, and before humans first moved into North America. The combination of rapid climate change with changing global economic, social and geopolitical conditions, along with technological and AI advancements in ship and infrastructure designs, could lead to fundamental changes in international maritime trade routes that may favour Arctic waters. New and highly relevant research will be shared in this presentation, including an overview of historic shipping traffic in Arctic Canada, the latest projections of future change, and an outline of key risks and opportunities. Dr. Jackie Dawson is the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Human and Policy Dimensions of Environmental Change and is a Full Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Geomatics at the University of Ottawa. She is also serving as a Researcher in Residence in the Office of the Chief Science Advisor. From 2018-24, Dr. Dawson was the Scientific Director of ArcticNet. As one of Canada’s leading scientists in climate change, her research is focused on understanding impacts, risks, and adaptation strategies for ocean and coastal regions. She is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has won several prestigious awards, including the SSHRC Impact Connection Award, the Governor General's Innovation Award, the Martin Bergmann Medal for Polar Science and Leadership, and the Dorothy Killam Fellowship. This discussion will be in English - Simultaneous translation available. Don't set up dates too quickly It's normal to chat and have some back and forth before deciding if a date is in the cards. If the person wants to meet you immediately that is a RED FLAG. 2. Meet up in a public place the first time It's a wise decision to choose a busy public location for your first date. Meet at a pub, coffee shop, restaurant, and/or busy park. This allows a secure setting for both of you. 3. Always arrange your own transportation for the initial date Always meet your date in a public place. Never, ever let them pick you up or drop you off on your first few dates. Even if they offer to pick you up or drop you off, say "no thanks" until you trust them! Remember the old saying stranger DANGER. 4. Tell someone you trust that you have a date Never go on a date/meet-up without telling someone. This should always be your no. 1 safety rule when meeting people for the first time. Let a friend or family member know that they should expect to hear from you at a certain time. You can also let them know where you're going on the date. It’s also a smart idea to have a ‘safe word’ or ‘safe phrase’, to use, just in case you need to make a quick exit. 5. Think before exchanging numbers Do not forget that you are under no need to share phone numbers if you feel uncomfortable. It’s OK to schedule dates and converse only through a safe app until you feel ready to give out your phone number. Always take your time when to disclose contact information since your privacy is crucial. 6. ALWAYS Trust your instincts If you sense any discomfort or uneasy vibes while conversing, planning a date in person, don't hesitate to leave immediately and exit the situation. Your well-being always comes first, and it's perfectly fine to step away if something doesn't feel right. Let your friend or family member know. Information Source: Crazy4Events | eventbrite
