The class demonstrates how we can use computer simulation and random number generation to estimate a value for pi. We'll start with a physical demonstration involving velcro darts and a felt dartboard to calculate a value of pi (~3-3.2 depending on the randomness). Then we'll write computer code and work through some mathematics to simulate throwing billions of darts per second. How does this change our estimate? Finally, we'll talk about how this work relates to ongoing research in biophysics. Our instructor, Dr Erik Nordquist, is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Maryland, Baltimore working on computer-aided drug design (CADD) in the context of cancer biology. This class is intended for 8th-12th graders, but younger students with a strong understanding of geometry are also welcome. “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” Frederick Douglass Enter a room where words will literally come off the page. At We Are The Banned, readers have the opportunity to become the speakers in the room. Join us as inspired readers share with you their favorite book passages and reflect on what makes them so impactful. We encourage theatricality, group expression, and any creative idea that will help to bring the words to life. Whether poetic, comedic, heartbreaking or rage inducing- each selection offers a peek into the human experience using literature as the lens. We Are The Banned is a live literary event series that invites readers to share short, meaningful passages from their favorite published books. More than just a reading, it’s an oratorical experience. One where participants express not only the written words, but also why those words matter. The theme for the next We Are The Banned is Forever Free. Interested in speaking? Sign up as a speaker and we will reach out to you. In the book Fahrenheit 451, when books become outlawed a small group of people memorized certain books to preserve them. This is the embodiment of what this event is. Providing oral alternatives to books that may not always be available. We Are The Banned operates with the knowing that if books are ultimately removed or erased, then we must become those books to preserve that knowledge and art of thought. We Are The Banned refers to the recognition that if the books are banned, then so are we. Information Source: Melanated Word Nerd | eventbrite

Whether you're a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the field, this event is perfect for anyone interested in genomics. Dr. Franck Dumetz of the University of Maryland School of Medicine will join us to review the theory of Nanopore sequencing, discuss its advantages over other sequencing methods, explore its potential applications, and then lead us in some hands-on work to see how these palm-size sequencers are enabling accessible and low-cost sequencing in a wider range of applications and contexts. See you there! Information Source: Baltimore Under Ground Science Space (BUGSS) | eventbrite
