Family Open Studio: Pen & Ink and Craft Paper | Art Gallery of Burlington

This winter we’re changing it up in the Family Studio, and letting imagination be our guide. We’ll still offer kids and their families with free space to develop their art-making skills by offering inspiration and ideas for projects, but we’re also giving folks the option to flex their creative muscles and work with the tools and materials provided to make something unique. We’ll introduce different materials every two weeks by upcycling the stuff we have a lot of – a skill you can continue to build at home with items you might once have overlooked. Inspired by the wealth of styles, ideas and ways of making found in Time Isn’t Real, our Family Open Studio is a place to try out new ideas and make something unexpected! Dive into the world of pen & ink drawing and learn to use a nib with India Ink to create beautiful line drawings. Practice your penmanship or write a letter to a friend – what you do with the mighty pen is up to you! Please Note: This program is meant for families to work together on art projects, so all children attending must be accompanied by an adult. Drop in any time between 1-4pm in the Family Studio. Space is limited to about 30 folks, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. While in the studio, please be mindful of other families wishing to participate! While you're here, you can check out our exhibitions and look for treasures on our Take + Make Cart! This cart, located just outside the Family Studio, is full of previously-loved art supplies. Mythical Maiolica | Art Gallery of Burlington

Age: 18+ Date: Thursdays, March 20 + 27, 2025 Time: 6:30 - 9:30 PM Cost: M $160 and NM $170 Instructor: Lindsay Montgomery In this two-part workshop, participants explore the Renaissance glaze-painting technique of Maiolica. Working on tiles, participants develop their own approach to pictorial storytelling and personal mythology using colour, composition and illustrative imagery. The artist will present historical and contemporary approaches to this varied technique as well as discussions on its modern relevance. Each workshop participant will complete several tiles to be fired and completed by the conclusion of the workshop. Lindsay Montgomery works across a variety of media including ceramics, painting, and puppetry to create narrative videos, performances, and objects. Her work is focused on creating personal mythologies that address topics and issues including death and mysticism, feminism, and evolving modes of power. She earned a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and received her MFA from the University of Minnesota. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally with exhibitions at the Gardiner Museum and The Archie Bray Foundation. She is the recipient of numerous awards including The Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics, The Joyce Carlyle Memorial Scholarship in the Crafts Endowment, and an individual project grant from The Canada Council for the Arts. Her work is included in the permanent collections of The Musée Des Beaux Arts in Montreal, The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, and the Gardiner Museum for Ceramics in Toronto. Age: 18+ Day: Friday March 21, 2025 Time: 6:30-9:30 PM Cost: M $65 and NM $70 Instructor: Michelle Lynn Come join us for some creative time in our clay studio as we teach you how to shape a functional object out of clay using beginner-friendly handbuilding techniques. Each session will introduce a unique project designed to bring creativity and comfort to your home during the winter months. March – Garden Gnomes: Get ready for spring by creating a new friend to watch over your garden! This fun sculpture project uses both slabs and pinch pot techniques to create the various parts of a whimsical garden gnome ready for your personal touches. When attending any of our public programs please consider bringing non-perishable food and hygiene products to donate to the Burlington Food Bank. Like so many communities, Burlington has seen an alarming 20% increase in the need for assistance with groceries over the last year. We are collecting community contributions to support the food bank’s efforts in meeting the growing demand for food security. About the Instructor: Michelle is a graduate of NSCAD University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics. Since 2009, Michelle has been teaching pottery at the Art Gallery of Burlington. She also teaches ceramics at the Burlington Senior’s Centre. Exploring in clay with children, teenagers and adults has given Michelle great joy! Radical Darkroom: Greening the Darkroom | Art Gallery of Burlington

Age: 18+ Dat: Wednesday March 26 Time: 6:30 - 9:30 PM Cost: M $60 and NM $65 Instructor: Sonya de Laat Black currants, beets and brewed coffee may not be part of the traditional darkroom, but they are part of greening the darkroom. This workshop will introduce alternative, eco-friendly materials and methods that minimize the use of toxic chemicals commonly found in conventional darkroom practices. This workshop is perfect for photographers seeking to integrate more sustainable practices into their workflow, whether you're an experienced darkroom enthusiast or a beginner interested in exploring film photography with a green twist. In this session, we’ll use everyday household ingredients to create light sensitive emulsions and darkroom film/paper developers that will expand your repertoire of photography’s capabilities. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of how their creative practices can align with a commitment to environmental stewardship, all while producing beautiful photographic prints. Bring your own black & white negatives (35mm, medium-format) or digital negatives (for contact printing) or use ones supplied by the instructor. All other materials will be supplied. About the Instructor: Sonya de Laat is a Hamilton-based photographer drawn to the medium’s many creative, social, and political potentials. After years of working and experimenting with different digital photography treatments, she has found a renewed sense of creative flow through exploration of nineteenth century photography techniques and alternative photography methods. She is an active member of the Latow Photographers Guild, housed within the Art Gallery of Burlington, currently acting as the guild’s secretary. Sonya has a Diploma in Photography from Algonquin College, and degrees in Anthropology (McMaster) and Media Studies (Western), where she focused on developing professional photography skills and studied histories of humanitarian photography. When not engaging in her creative photography practice, she works as a Research Associate at McMaster University and a Historical Interpreter at Whitehern Historical House & Garden for the City of Hamilton. Age: 18+ Dat: Friday March 7, 2025 Time: 6:30-9:30 PM Cost: M $65 and NM $70 Instructor: Nesli Pakkal Want to learn about a ceramicist’s unique approach to their craft, while trying your hand at creating your own clay vessel? Join us for a night of learning how to use the pottery wheel – absolutely no experience is required for this fun, hands-on night working with clay. Effective September 2024, Build A Bowl workshop fees will include firing and glazing for a maximum of two bowls per student. Bowls selected for firing must be structurally sound, meaning that there are no holes in the vessel and walls are neither too heavy or too thin to withstand firing. Additional bowls may be fired and glazed at a cost of $10 per bowl provided these also meet the technical requirements for a finished bowl. When attending any of our public programs please consider bringing non-perishable food and hygiene products to donate to the Burlington Food Bank. About the Instructor: Nesli Pakkal has been a passionate potter and a member of the Art Gallery of Burlington and the Burlington Potters Guild since 2017. Her primary focus is wheel work. She creates a wide range of both contemporary and traditional pieces including a line of Ottoman/Turkish designs that back to the 15 th century. She continues to refine her skills through the Mohawk College Ceramics program, and by taking advanced classes from master potter Donn Zver. Nesli’s work has been on exhibit at AGB. She takes part in seasonal sales of Burlington Potters Guild and Hamilton Potters Guild. She loves to teach and transfer her passion and knowledge to people interested in playing with clay.
