This academy aims to enhance basketball skills, boost basketball IQ, and cultivate a deep passion for the game among student-athletes. Under the guidance of Coach Colley-Leger and her team, elite student-athletes in grades 7-12 can partake in a week-long camp focused on honing fundamentals and preparing for higher-level competition.
Participants are required to have completed at least their Grade 7 academic year and have prior experience in Division 1 or Division 2 High School, Junior High, or Club basketball. The camp, held at Halifax Grammar School, offers separate sessions for girls and boys on specific dates in July and August. Each registered student-athlete will receive a reversible jersey and must come prepared with appropriate gym attire, a basketball, and other necessary equipment.

This session is designed to introduce adults (ages 18 and up) to the basics of working with clay and creating their very own ceramic masterpieces. In this 2.5-hour session, you will be guided through wheel throwing and hand-building techniques. During the session, you’ll have the opportunity to create two pieces, which we will fire and glaze for you. Your finished pieces will be ready for collection a few weeks later. These workshops aim to engage the community, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared creativity. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, this workshop is perfect for anyone interested in the art of ceramics. These workshops are generously funded by Project Colt and the National Lottery, making art accessible to all. The writing you create during this session may become part of the final show, with all contributions featured on IOU's interactive map of Calderdale’s most meaningful places. Through this workshop, you’ll explore the themes of home, space, place, and landscape. Whether it’s a hidden spot, a cherished view, or a place full of memories, Anjum will guide you in expressing what makes your chosen place special. You’ll be free to write in any form—poetry, prose, or free writing—bringing your ideas to life in a way that resonates with you. Michael Stewart is the author of nine acclaimed books, including King Crow (winner of the Guardian’s Not-the-Booker Award); Ill Will: The Untold Story of Heathcliff; and a hybrid memoir: Walking the Invisible: Following in the Brontës’ Footsteps. He is also the creator of the Brontë Stones project, four monumental stones situated in the landscape between the birthplace and the parsonage, inscribed with poems by Kate Bush, Carol Ann Duffy, Jeannette Winterson and Jackie Kay. Black Wood Women (HarperCollins) is his latest novel. About the book: The last wolf in England hunts for prey. Exhausted, hungry and alone, she fears for the litter of pups she carries, and the men who seek to wipe her out. Yorkshire, 1649. Since they fled Ireland, Caragh and her family have hidden their true identities to enable them to start a new life in England. But when Caragh finds her parents brutally murdered by a Protestant determined to rid the area of Catholics, she must flee again. Travelling east, she comes to a forest, where she meets a coven of women who wear their hair loose and refuse to follow men’s rules. Having found acceptance at last, Caragh is unaware that a different kind of persecution stalks the black wood women, and their days in the forest are numbered.

As part of Culturedale Year of Culture 2024, Flying Duck Studio Lab together with Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary and Calderdale Libraries - Halifax library are hosting 3 Creative Workshops on the 5th, 6th and 7th December with professional artists and filmmakers teaching the workshops. The point of these workshops is to create diverse communities through storytelling and focus on representation and power of storytelling in different formats. There is a limited space of 16 participants per workshop. Age required to attend is 16+ Workshop 1: Social Impact Media - Thursday 5th December from 11am-3pm Creating 1 minute films for Social Media, News and DocumentarySocial Impact Media focuses on the social impact of storytelling. Based on Tales of a Child, we will dive into the authenticity of storytelling and how interviews, media and agenda plays a big part in what is being told and how it is being told. We will look at documentary and social media News to see how the two can be applied in different ways to tell the same story. As a participant, you will have a basic understanding of editing, editing software, filmmaking and documentary.
