This thought-provoking display charts the history and influence of the Theravāda Buddhist tradition across the world, including its role in Scotland today. The Theravāda tradition is one of the oldest forms of Buddhism. As one of the two main branches of the faith, it remains strong in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. The display includes a Buddha on loan from The Dhammapadipa Temple in Edinburgh. The Buddha was designed and made in Thailand in 2013, then later gifted to Temple where it is now used in their garden meditation room. The image takes inspiration from the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat (Great Victorious Buddha), one of the most revered Buddha images in Thailand. Alongside the loan are 40 objects from the South and Southeast Asian collection, dating from the 2nd century AD to the present day. They include amulets, relics, statues, and votive offerings, all of which were and are used by Buddhists in their everyday religious practice. A set of 19th century spinning gongs from Myanmar are also on display. Audio recordings of the gongs provide visitors with a sensory experience, representative of the sound of visiting a temple. The gongs are played by Ewan Millar, percussion student at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Proper Scottish Gravel! This Ride will leave from the Alpkit Edinburgh store at 10am, and should take 2-4 hours depending on your speed. Be prepared for hills, slippy singletrack, and soggy shoes! The route is currently in the works, and may change depending upon riding conditions within the coming months. Composition of the route will be mainly hardpack gravel paths, and some potentially sloppy singletrack... Expect mud, expect wind, pray for sunshine ;) A GPX file of the route will be sent out to all participants who have confirmed their booking through Eventbrite, on the Thursday before the event. The route can be completed fast or at your own pace, we encourage those of all abilities to take part and have lots of fun! Just remember, this is a social ride with gravel enthusiasts and you are fully self-supported. Please come equipped with everything you would bring on a solo ride (including a helmet) and be aware that the very nature of being self-supported means you are your own mechanic for this ride, so although we all hope it won't happen... be prepared to fix a puncture by the side of the trail or handle anything else that may occur en route! Also bear in mind that the weather can be changeable at this time of year, so please dress accordingly to the forecast to ensure you stay warm and comfortable for the duration of the event. (We also recommend bringing a spare set of clothes for travelling home as you may get wet and muddy!) Back at Alpkit Edinburgh there will be snacks and weather-specific refreshments and plenty of time to chat bikes, routes and all things adventure with staff and fellow riders. Step into the sun-drenched hills of Laurel Canyon, September 1973, where music, fame, and scandal collide in Edinburgh University Shakespeare Company’s electrifying adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Set against the backdrop of Watergate-era America, this bold retelling captures the highs and lows of fame and reputation, exploring themes of misogyny, independence, and the trappings of public personas in the uninhibited hedonism of the 1970s. Panel: Dr Alex Brostoff Dr Alice Parrinello Dr Evelyn Whorrall-Campbell Dr Wannes Dupont (chair) Queering tends to reject stable conceptions of sexual and gender identity in favour of deep thinking about methods, methodologies, theories and epistemologies. Queer perspectives provide the opportunity to adapt and reclaim research methods that may reflect a heteronormative, privileged or hegemonic bias. These creative and transformative possibilities can also enable a critical reflexive engagement with understanding and theorising queer lives and politics. This discussion brings together researchers in literature, film, theatre and digital art to explore the ways in which queering can enrich contemporary scholarship in the arts and beyond, and the role of trans in queer/ing research. The event will be followed by a drinks reception. This LGBT+ History Month event is supported by the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) and GENDER.ED. Biographies Our panel are all 2024-25 Postdoctoral Fellows at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh: Alex Brostoff (they/them) is Assistant Professor of English at Kenyon College, where they are affiliated faculty in Gender and Sexuality Studies, American Studies, and the Latinx Studies Concentration. An interdisciplinary scholar and translator, their work converges at the crossroads of genre-hybrid literatures, literary and critical theory, and trans and queer cultural production in modern and contemporary hemispheric American studies. Their first book, Unruly Relations: A Critical Reframing of Autotheory, is under advance contract with Columbia University Press. They are also the co-editor of two volumes: Autotheories (The MIT Press, 2025) and Reassignments: Trans and Sex from the Clinical to the Critical (Fordham University Press, under advance contract), as well as the co-editor of “Autotheory,” a special issue of ASAP/Journal (2021) and “Trans Literatures,” a special issue of College Literature: A Journal of Critical Literary Studies (2025). They have translated a range of works from Spanish and Portuguese, including Indigenous leader Ailton Krenak’s Life Is Not Useful (Polity Press, 2023) and Ancestral Future (Polity Press, 2024). Their scholarship and translations have appeared in ASAP/Journal, Critical Times, Synthesis, Dibur, and South Atlantic Quarterly, as well as at the Museum of Modern Art, and elsewhere. They received their PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley in 2021. Alice Parrinello (she/her) was recently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford, investigating postcolonial and environmental films for the Wellcome-Trust funded project “After the End” in collaboration with the British Film Institute (BFI). She completed her PhD from the University of Oxford in 2024 with a thesis on the films and plays by Sicilian director Emma Dante through the lens of queer theory. Alice's research engaged with questions of temporality, spectrality, kinship, ecofeminism, and homonationalism in Dante's works and argued that a queer and Southern epistemology is taking place. Her published work includes articles that have appeared in gender/sexuality/Italy, Whatever. A Transdisciplinary Journal of Queer Theories and Studies, and Simultanea: A Journal of Italian Media and Pop Culture, among others. Evelyn Whorrall-Campbell (they/them) is a researcher, writer and artist. They completed their PhD in Film and Screen Studies at the University of Cambridge in 2024, with a thesis on British trans cultural production and trans theory in the 1990s. Their PhD combined historical and theoretical approaches to demarcate this as a period of radical practice and epistemic change, and to argue that the difficulty of thinking trans in the present originates with the political horizons of the 1990s. Informed by their creative work, Evelyn’s research attempts to develop strategies of trans theorising and practice that challenge the foreclosure of gender transition as material reality. Their writing has been published or is forthcoming in British Art Studies, world picture journal, Art Monthly, and Cambridge Literary Review, amongst others. Evelyn is also the author of Memoirs of a Child Plot Hole: How to Escape Yourself Without Even Trying, a work of experimental fiction published in 2022 by Sticky Fingers Publishing. Their work has been shown, performed, read at TACO!, Kaunas Artists’ House, Auto Italia, Kupfer Project and Kingsgate Project Space. Chair: Wannes Dupont (he/him) is Lecturer in History of Sexuality at the University of Edinburgh’s School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Previously, he was Assistant Professor of History at Yale-NUS College in Singapore after postdoctoral fellowships at Yale University and for the Flemish Research Foundation at the University of Antwerp. His work, publications and teaching primarily concern the European and global sexual pasts, queer history, reproductive politics, and the intersections of biopolitics and religion. He is also Associate Director of GENDER.ED, the University of Edinburgh's university-wide platform of the promotion of teaching and research on genders and sexualities. Scottish art has long been inspired by literature, while Scottish artists and publishers have made fundamental contributions in the fields of book and magazine illustration, advertising posters, comics, graphic novels and artists’ books. In turn, there has been a significant body of writings on Scottish art in both fiction and non-fiction, and many outstanding collaborations between artists and writers. This conference will share current research and critical debate into the myriad relationships between art and text and our programme features artists, writers, curators, archivists, art historians, literary and linguistic scholars and interdisciplinary researchers. Mak it Yersel! Workshop Join Scottish Young Makars Leah Sinforiani & Eve McIntosh as they lead a gallus new workshop for fellow young poets. Whether you’re new to writing, seeking some encouragement, or are looking for some creative inspiration, join Leah & Eve in Edinburgh’s Scottish Poetry Library to hear why it’s so great to write poetry, what they’ve learned through their makarship and engage with writing prompts that connect you to the Scots language in the most sparkly of ways (think Kneecap meets poetry meets making new pals) The workshop will include an explanation of the Young Makar Program, alongside some readings of poetry written by Leah and Eve’s mentors, some of the biggest names on the Scottish Poetry Scene. The workshop will encourage writers to respond to these poems collaboratively, engage with Scots vocab in a new way and poetically spark off one another to MAK NEW POEMS! The Young Makars will also perform their own work, written thanks to the award. Eve McIntosh is an experimental poet & avid eco-horror enthusiast, born in Dundee & based in Glasgow, Scotland. Her poetry has appeared in local Glasgow journals & zines such as GUM, From Glasgow To Saturn, Crisp Packet Poetry & Big Red Cat. Previously, she has written for METAL Magazine, mainly journalistic articles about modern art & interviews with new musicians. She has also dabbled in prose, published in QMUnicate & FLEET. Eve is currently an editor for From Glasgow To Saturn & a recent graduate from the University of Glasgow as a Master of Arts. You will find her by still bodies of water, under trees eating peaches & in the dark corners of your stairwell with a pen in hand. Leah Sinforiani is a writer and researcher from Glasgow. This year, Leah was selected by the Scottish Poetry Library as one of their Next Generation Young Makars. Her work explores the intergalactic motorways that connect class, gender and posh clothing brands. Plus-Minus brings to life Martin Parker’s mirror-shift , a new work which corrals a host of AI music creation, development and performance tools together and drags them through the wringer of contemporary experimental music. The piece explores the sonic identities that form when we shift the AI mirror from reflecting us head-on, to glancing side-long across our rapidly developing landscape of human-computer entanglements. Then two works that each do arranging in a different way. Like the many chamber versions of orchestral works made for Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances in Vienna from 1918, we include Mark Knoop’s intimate arrangement of Laurence Crane’s orchestral piece Cobbled Section After Cobbled Section . The show concludes with the premiere of American composer Aaron Wyanski’s arrangement of Arnold Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra , the latest instalment in his Schoenberg in Hi-Fi series. Schoenberg in Hi-Fi is an ongoing series of albums that posit an alternate reality. In my speculative universe, Schoenberg lives a little longer — into the late 1950s: a time when a new commodity was reshaping the music industry, the stereo LP. As high-fidelity audio entered the homes of more and more middle-class Americans, record companies began producing and marketing albums around how unique the sounds on it were, whether that was in the exotica of Lex Baxter, the space music of Sun Ra, or the extreme eclecticism of Esquivel. Though mostly aimed at a wide popular audience, countless liner notes spun infinite variations of the same boast: you’ve never heard this before. Schoenberg had been living in Los Angeles for many years, and had he been alive when the Capitol Records building was completed in 1956, he would have been a stone’s throw away from one of the centres of mid-century pop music. What if an executive from Capitol had become taken with the idea of presenting Schoenberg’s works in the manner of the many “jazzing up the classics” albums produced in this period? — Aaron Wyanski About Plus-Minus Ensemble is a UK based ensemble committed to commissioning new work and placing it alongside recent and landmark modern repertoire. Formed in 2003, Plus-Minus is distinguished by its interest in performative, electroacoustic and conceptual pieces, and experimental open works such as Stockhausen’s 1963 classic, from which the group takes its name. Welcome to Rudolf Steiner's Cosmic Verse from 1915! Join us for a weekend (Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February 2025) with a project group of the Eurythmy Association of the UK and Ireland at the Edinburgh Steiner School. On Saturday 22nd, an introductRoy presentation will be offered by the director of the company (1500). Following this . Dr Jenny Josephson will give a lecture on the background to these verses (1545). After refreshments there will then be the opportunity to take part in a eurythmy workshop to give you a taster of the movement experience (1630). For those who book an evening meal will be served at 1745. In the evening (1930) there will be a demonstration followed by the full artistic presentation consisting of The Cosmic Measure; Dance of the Planets, Twelve Moods and the associated Satire: A Song of Initiation. There will be a further chance to see the demonstration and artistic performance on the Sunday 23rd at 1030. 'The Foreign Wives' Club' is the second novel from indie author Fiona Scott-Barrett. It tells the story of four women living on the island of Crete in the late 1990s. Each has fallen in love either with a Cretan man or with the island itself, but what happens when the honeymoon period is over? What does the event involve? We LOVE public records, but we know it's not a great idea to talk about them for 90 minutes straight. So we've assembled incredible musicians to make this a complete night of entertainment. Is this really a comedy show about public records? That sounds....unusual. Absolutely. We're nerds for public records, and we are comedy writers in New York. This show combines those two passions. I like bluegrass but know nothing about public records. Is this show for me? Definitely. The musical line-up is incredible, so you'll be happy. And you'll also enjoy the public records part of the show. It's funny, and you may learn something. Can I bring my children? The public record does contain several references to adult topics (Americans are naughty, you know?), so keep that in mind. But they'll certainly enjoy the music. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No. Who is the host? Curtis Raye has spent time in Washington DC, New York City, and working on a presidential campaign in Iowa. He's observed the inherent comedy in public records. School board meetings, court testimony, and even White House menus are treasure troves of human folly.
