The History of Witchcraft and Feminism with Dr Jennifer Farrell | Hen & Chicken
May 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Southville
The image of a female witch, with broom and black cat serving the devil, is ingrained in pop culture. But where did this stereotype come from?
The concept of witchcraft emerged slowly over the course of several centuries as a result of theological, intellectual, and cultural changes in ideas about demons and heresy.
Magical practices were varied - including love magic, healing, and various forms of prognostication. And it certainly wasn’t always associated with women. In fact, more ‘sinister’ magic like necromancy - which relied heavily on the power of demons - was mostly done by men. This type of magic involved a lot of education that simply wasn’t accessible to women at the time. So how come this image of evil women practising magic - witches - came about?
This talk will use feminist approaches to the past to explore medieval changes in ideas about magic, gender, and heresy in order to better understand the emergence of witchcraft at the end of the middle ages. We will also look at witchcraft in relation to female sexuality and fears about women’s access to ritual power throughout history.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
Follow us on IG @seedtalks
Dr Jennifer Farrell is a lecturer in medieval history at the University of Exeter. With interests in both gender and the medieval supernatural, her research and teaching focuses on cultural developments and their relationship to socio-political changes in Western Europe during the high and late middle ages (c. 1000- c. 1500). She has published on subjects including medieval prophecy; fairies in medieval history and romance; the relationship between literary representations of fairies, the supernatural, and gender; and is currently working on a book focused on Geoffrey of Monmouth and the origins of the Arthurian legends. Her teaching has included undergraduate and postgraduate courses looking at medieval gender and sexuality, universities and learning in the middle ages, magic in the middle ages, sexualities across time and space, and the legends of King Arthur.

Polymer Clay Jewellery Making Workshop | New Bristol Brewery Taproom
May 3, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Saint Paul's
It’s time for our first ever Saturday workshop!
Lots of people have asked when I’ll be running a weekend workshop, and the time has finally come! On the 3rd of May, we’ll be taking over a brand new location in central Bristol for a wholesome afternoon of jewellery making.
Over the course of three hours, you’ll learn how to create your very own polymer clay jewellery using the ‘cane’ method. You can design any style of earrings, focusing mainly on checkered and striped patterns—but you’re welcome to experiment with other designs too!
You’ll be able to either pick them up or have them posted to you around two weeks later, once they’ve been baked, varnished, and assembled.
Where?
New Bristol Brewery Taproom, 20A Wilson St, St Paul's, Bristol BS2 9HH
When?
3rd May
Time?
1-4pm
What to Expect:
Choose or mix your preferred colours.
Create your own pattern.
Create 1 pair of earrings / jewellery.
Leave your jewellery with me for baking, varnishing, and assembling.
Collect your finished pair from my home studio in St Werburghs (around two weeks later) or choose to have them posted to you. You will be contacted once they’re ready.
The reason I’ll be taking your creations home is to bake them so they harden. I will then sand, varnish and assemble them, making them ready to wear when you collect them.
Please bring a container for any extra earrings or scrap clay you want to take home and experiment with!
All materials and equipment are provided, and
no prior experience is required.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me at

Taster Session - Canoe and kayak | Bristol Avon Sailing Club
May 6, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bristol
Taster Sessions are an opportunity for beginners to try paddling for the first time with an experienced paddler/coach or for club members to meet and enjoy time on the water together. It's a good way to meet other members of the club. It is a gentle paddle on the River Avon in kayaks and canoes and is suitable for adults and children over 8 and most abilities. Please do contact us if you want to check if it will be OK for you. We ask that if you have a child paddling with us you stay at the sailing club or nearby in case your child wants to finish early or gets cold. We meet at 6.30pm at the Bristol Avon Sailing Club, get everyone sorted with boats and kit and then get you on the water. We paddle either upstream or downstream depending on conditions. There is no charge for parking. There are changing facilities, toilets and showers (male and female) so bring a towel. We aim to be off the water by 8.30pm. After the paddle some of us head to the nearby pub for a drink and cheesy chips. You'd be very welcome to join us. What do I need to bring? You need to bring water, a snack and a spare set of dry clothes. We recommend wearing shorts or leggings - not jeans! A warm layer like a fleece is a good idea for cooler days. Avoid cotton t-shirts and bottoms. If you have one - a wet-suit is great. If windy you might want to wear a cagoule. You will need to wear something on your feet - wet suit boots/beach shoes or trainers you don't mind getting wet are ideal. Kit If you require kit - boat, paddle, spraydeck, helmet and buoyancy aid then we can provide it for you. We ask that all paddlers wear a helmet for their own safety. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. We look forward to paddling with you. Thank you To the volunteers from NACC who make Taster Sessions possible.

At our Family Style Cookery Classes, you will be

A message from our Chef Ali:
“Hi, my name is Ali and I come from Kurdistan, Iraq. I grew up in a beautiful city called Sulaymaniyah. I was studying Geography at university, but in 2017 I needed to leave because it was dangerous for me to stay. When I came to Bristol in 2020 I felt relief because the people were so friendly and supportive.
I learnt to cook from my grandmother and stepmother when I was 15. They said you must look after yourself when you are at University. I discovered I loved cooking. The first things I cooked were rice and aubergine stew to go with lamb.
When I lived in Manchester with 4 friends, I did all the cooking. In Bristol I worked in a Kurdish restaurant in Old Market.
I love sharing my recipes from my country with people from different countries. Kurdish cuisine uses a lot of fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. It is very tasty but not too spicy. So I am excited to have joined Migrateful and can’t wait to share my story and culture.”

Taster Session - Canoe and kayak | Bristol Avon Sailing Club
May 13, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bristol
Tasters Sessions are offered on Tuesdays in May and June. They are an opportunity for beginners to try paddling for the first time with an experienced paddler/coach or for club members to meet and enjoy time on the water together.
