WHB April Book Club: Will and Testament by Vigdis Hjorth | Womb House Books
Apr 30, 2025 (UTC-8)
Oakland
When Vigdis Hjorth published Will and Testament in her native Norway, its frank discussion of family secrets caused quite the controversy. Find out why and experience the propulsive brilliance of queen Vigdis at Womb House Books. When a dispute over her parents’ will grows bitter, Bergljot is drawn back into the orbit of the family she fled twenty years before. Her mother and father have decided to leave two island summer houses to her sisters, disinheriting the two eldest siblings from the most meaningful part of the estate. To outsiders, it is a quarrel about property and favoritism. But Bergljot, who has borne a horrible secret since childhood, understands the gesture as something very different—a final attempt to suppress the truth and a cruel insult to the grievously injured. Will and Testament is a lyrical meditation on trauma and memory, as well as a furious account of a woman’s struggle to survive and be believed. Vigdis Hjorth’s novel became a controversial literary sensation in Norway and has been translated into twenty languages. Vigdis Hjorth is the author of over a dozen prize-winning and best-selling novels. Will and Testament sold 170,000 copies in Norway and has received several awards, including the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature and the Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize, as well as being nominated for the National Book Award and Nordic Council Literature Prize. Long Live the Post Horn! won the Believer Book Award for fiction in 2020, and Is Mother Dead was listed for the International Booker Prize in 2023.

Rehearsals for Dying: Ariel Gore at Womb House Books | Womb House Books
Apr 11, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Oakland
Join us for a conversation on Ariel Gore's new book, Rehearsals for Dying: Digressions on Love and Cancer at Womb House Books. Ariel will be in conversation with Jessica Ferri, owner of Womb House Books, followed by Q&A and book signing. Pre-order your signed copy of Rehearsals for Dying An expansive, darkly funny, and deeply personal reflection on the reality of living with—and dying from—metastatic breast cancer. Deena stepped out of the shower and opened her towel in the steam. “Does my breast look weird?” These words irrevocably change the lives of writer Ariel Gore and her wife. As they descend into a world of doctors and tests, medications and insurance, sickness and treatments and hope and pain and more, they discover just how little they truly knew—despite the awareness campaigns and hyper-visible pink ribbons—about the reality of breast cancer. Over the four years following Deena’s terminal diagnosis, Gore does what she always does, no matter how difficult or personal the subject: she writes about it. With keen insights, empathy, and humor, Ariel Gore braids together the story of Deena’s experience, her own role as a caretaker, narratives from others living with breast cancer, literary reflections on illness, and reportage on the history of breast cancer and the $200 billion industry that capitalizes on and profits from breast cancer screenings and treatments. Rehearsals for Dying investigates and challenges everything we think we know about breast cancer. It goes beyond awareness to knowledge, presenting a rich, nuanced, heartbreaking, and hopeful portrait of what it is to be diagnosed with, treat, and live with breast cancer in the twenty-first century. Ariel Gore makes books, zines, coloring books, and tarot cards. She is the founding editor and publisher of the Alternative Press Award–winning magazine Hip Mama and the author of ten books of fiction and nonfiction, including Hexing the Patriarchy, We Were Witches, and The End of Eve. Womb House Books is an inclusive feminist bookshop located in Oakland's Temescal Alley.
