He used a wide-range of materials but was most dedicated to woodworking, once stating that wood was his “whole life.”

Born in Calcutta and raised in the verdant Himalayan mountains of Kashmir, Shaw draws deeply on the landscapes and memories of his early life, many of which were fractured by political upheaval. Forced to leave Kashmir as a teenager, he relocated first to New Delhi and later to London, where he studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
His work is influenced by a broad range of sources—Mughal and Persian miniatures, Renaissance altarpieces, Old Masters paintings, Japanese arts of the Momoyama period, Kashmiri and Urdu poetry, and Hindu and Western mythology—and yet his visual vocabulary and technique are all his own.

Renowned multimedia artist Dieter Roth’s preferred form, and the one he spent his lifetime pursuing, was the Gesamtkunstwerk, a German term for “total work of art.” Working across a diverse range of media, disciplines, and creative activities, Roth developed an artistic practice that dissolved the boundaries between art and life, upending traditional categories, hierarchies, and even timeworn notions of singular authorship. Often collaborating with other artists, including his son Björn, Roth produced an ever-expanding body of work that gestured toward the cumulative effects of a life spent making and remaking.

Chicago
From large-scale figures of gods and goddesses to portraits of emperors and magnificent funerary monuments, this exhibition brings to North America, for the first time, a selection of 58 rarely seen ancient Roman sculptures from Italy’s storied Torlonia Collection.Nearly half of these sculptures, which range in date from the 5th century BCE to the early 4th century CE, have not been publicly displayed in more than 70 years and have been newly cleaned, conserved, and studied specifically for this exhibition, making for a spectacular opportunity to experience their first public presentation in decades. The Torlonia Collection is not only the largest private collection of Roman marble sculptures in Italy, but it is also arguably the most important of such private collections in the world. Comprising 622 works and a wide range of sculptural types and subjects, its holdings rival those of major institutions in Europe, including the Capitoline and Vatican Museums.

Frida Kahlo’s Month in Paris: A Friendship with Mary Reynolds | The Art Institute of Chicago
Mar 29–Jul 13, 2025 (UTC-6)

Drawing upon the extensive Mary Reynolds Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago and extraordinary Kahlo loans from public and private collections in the US, Mexico, and Europe, the presentation sheds light on this little-known chapter of 20th-century art history, recounting the legacies of Kahlo and Reynolds—both artists themselves and partners of artists—as they navigated Surrealism, identity, and cross-cultural exchange on the eve of World War II.

Initially unveiled on September 11, 2010, the work connects two significant historical events separated by 108 years: the First World’s Parliament of Religions which began on September 11, 1893, and the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. At the earlier event, the World Parliament of Religions, held in an auditorium that encompassed the area that today includes both the museum’s Fullerton Hall and Woman’s Board Grand Staircase, a young Hindu monk, Swami Vivekananda electrified audiences with a powerful speech calling for an end to religious fundamentalism, intolerance, and bigotry.

Descending the Staircase | Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago
Dec 16, 2024–Jul 6, 2025 (UTC-6)
Chicago
Descending the Staircase considers novel artistic approaches to representing the human body. Spread across two floors of the museum, the exhibition presents figures of all kinds, from the fragmented, absurd, and surreal to the curated, self-aware, and media savvy. Puppets, masks, and automatons merge bodies with objects, juxtaposing the animate and inanimate, while abstract sculptures evoke the human form through soft and fleshy materials such as nylon, wax, hair, and latex. Elsewhere, artists deploy the living body as a medium, setting it in motion with performance and gesture. Together, these artworks delve into fundamental questions about the human body in the contemporary world, including its relationship to labor and machines, its presentation in advertising and social media, and its role within the everyday domestic sphere.

Vanessa Damilola Macaulay: Breathing Race into the Machine | International Museum of Surgical Science

Chicago
Breathing Race into the MachineBy Vanessa Damilola MacaulayJune 27 - August 17, 2025Opening ReceptionJune 27th, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Free with RSVPBreathing Race into the Machine interrogates the racial logics encoded in medical instruments, not as corrupted deviations from a neutral standard but as systems deliberately engineered to encode inequality. Centering the spirometer, a device used to measure lung capacity, the exhibition reveals how this tool of clinical diagnosis doubled as a mechanism of racial classification. The spirometer, developed in the 19th century, helped forge and legitimise pseudoscientific claims that Black people had diminished lung capacity, reinforcing myths of biological inferiority. These claims were not discarded with time; they have been absorbed into contemporary medical protocols, algorithms, and diagnostic thresholds. The racial bias encoded in the spirometer persists, along with the ideology that justified it, as an enduring fiction that pathologises Black breath while disguising power as science. In this exhibition, breath is not a symbol but a contested physiological threshold, a racialised site of measurement and control. For Black people, the reading of breath has long been made legible only to institutions of slavery and their afterlives in policing, medicine, environmental policy, education, and the carceral state, where the simple act of breathing remains a site of surveillance, suspicion, and control. Rather than repair or redeem the spirometer, Vanessa Damilola Macaulay unsettles its logic, reimagining its function and offering a new grammar for how breath is measured, heard, and understood. Through sculpture, sound, performance and archival excavation, she challenges the ways bodies are rendered measurable. Breathing Race into the Machine is not about outdated science; it is a powerful examination of how modern technologies continue to extract legibility from Black flesh while remaining fundamentally inadequate to comprehend the complexity of Black life in the US and beyond. About the Artist: Vanessa Damilola Macaulay, a Black British artist based in Chicago, works across performance, video, and photography to explore how creative strategies can centre Black life in ways that resist and reimagine systems of antiblackness. Each project takes a distinct form, shaped by embodied inquiry and social urgency. Macaulay’s work, grounded in Black feminist epistemologies and speculative modes of inquiry, challenges inherited narratives and constructs new visual and performative languages for imagining Black life beyond survival. Recent works include This Way Up with Care, a performance that examines the struggles associated with crossing borders, and The Architect, an immersive performance on a double-decker bus in London shown at the Greenwich & Docklands International Festival. Macaulay’s work has been featured in theatres, exhibitions and residencies across the UK, South Africa, Europe, and the U.S. Learn More: https://www.vanessamacaulay.com/ This project is partially supported by a CityArts Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events.
