Zhao Renhui's Seeing the Forest Exhibition | Singapore Art Museum

Jan 15–May 18, 2025 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Exhibitions
Last year, Zhao Renhui’s exhibition project See the Forest was presented at the Singapore Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, deeply echoing the theme of “outsiders everywhere”. This year, the work will return to Singapore, a country known for its green environmental policies. In 2007, Zhao Renhui founded the Institute of Critical Zoologists as a creative platform that combines the study of nature, artistic expression, and strong narrative construction. Based on “documentary” and “research”, his works are highly subjective and imaginative. Through video works, sound and sculptural installations, See the Forest explores lesser-known intersectional stories and moments of obvious dependence between human society and nature. The exhibition reveals how secondary forests provide intersections for colonization, migration, sustainability and discovery, while also suggesting that the edges of cities - especially well-planned cities - may be the most intense boundaries in existence. Through this exhibition, people can better understand the evolution of Singapore, revealing how the shaping of the natural world by human urban design has formed an ecosystem that echoes the trajectory and composition of urban populations.

Two weeks after a loss that reverberates through the nation, a young gallerist prepares for her first exhibition. Lily has endured constant pressure from her formidable boss, spent countless hours on research, revved up the public for a buzzworthy show - everything for the perfect opening that will cement her name in the art world. The months of suffering are about to pay off at last. But when the final painting arrives, hand-delivered by the reclusive Gopal Rangaraj himself, she is horrified. With the entire exhibition - and her fledgling career - on the line, even the surprise visit from her artist girlfriend Marjia can’t cushion the gravity of the situation. As three different worldviews collide, how much should be sacrificed in the name of Art? Following the sold-out success ofBrown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes(2023), critically acclaimed playwright Myle Yan Tay returns withStatement Piece, a new play that continually shifts the lens on how the beliefs and choices that push us apart are often born from a yearning for acceptance and community. His signature blend of sharp humour and acute insight is dexterously brought to the stage by director Claire Wong with nuance, elegance, and a sure hand. Huzir Sulaiman ably takes on dual roles as dramaturg and performer, starring alongside Tricia Tan and Rusydina Afiqah in this powerfully vivid work.Statement Pieceinterrogates the purpose of art in this country, the limits of our ambitions, and the legacies we leave.
