AA Dhand
was raised in Bradford and spent his youth observing the city from behind the counter of a small convenience store. After qualifying as a pharmacist, he worked in London and travelled extensively before returning to Bradford to start his own business and begin writing. The history, diversity and darkness of the city have inspired his Harry Virdee novels and he has adapted the third book of these for a drama series
Virdee
, which started on the BBC in February 2025.
Russ Thomas
was born in Essex, raised in Berkshire and now lives in Sheffield. After a few 'proper' jobs (among them: pot-washer, optician’s receptionist, supermarket warehouse operative, call-centre telephonist, and storage salesman), he discovered the joys of bookselling, where he could talk to people about books all day. Sex, Spies and Politics – with Stephen May | Lawrence Batley Theatre
May 16, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Huddersfield
Enjoy an in-conversation with Stephen May – “The spry, sardonic voice of the new historical fiction”
Hilary Mantel
.
Stephen’s latest book
Green Ink
is based on the real-life story of former Colne Valley MP Victor Grayson, a bisexual hedonist and secret service informant. Victor vanished one night in late September 1920, having threatened to reveal all he knew about Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s involvement in selling honours.
Was he murdered by the British government? By enemies in the Socialist movement (who he had betrayed in the war)? Did he fall in the Thames drunk? Did he vanish to save his own life, and become an antiques dealer in Kent?
Whatever the truth,
Green Ink
imagines what might have been with brio, humour and humanity; and is a reminder that the past was once as alive as we are today.
“Stephen May has a nose for fascinating historical events”
The Times
“Vivid and wholly credible recreation of post-Great War London”
Robert Edric
Stephen May
is the author of six novels including
Life! Death! Prizes!

The York Waits have been performing early music on early instruments since the 1970s and have released a stream of recordings covering periods that include the life and times of Richard III, Henry VIII and the Gunpowder Plotters...

How To Create A Climate Action Plan - For Sports Clubs and Organisations | DRAM Sport and Community Centre
May 29, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Huddersfield
During this 2.5 hour workshop we’ll explore how to come up with a practical Climate Action Plan for your sports club or organisation. Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent - and you may well have noticed how this can have a significant impact on how many people get involved in your activities - perhaps because of things like waterlogged pitches or heatwaves. And whilst we can’t solve the climate crisis on our own, there are definitely things we can do as organisations. Yet it can be hard to know where to begin. With this in mind, we will: Explore the reasons why it’s important for sports clubs and organisations to take action.Understand where our main environmental impacts are - in areas such as energy use, travel and waste.Think creatively about the practical things we can do - to reduce our organisation's negative environmental impacts - and to make a positive difference in our communities too.Explore wider positive impacts from taking climate action - such as lowering your energy bills and breaking down barriers to participationFind out about sources of further support and fundingBenefits of the workshop Completely freeRefreshments and food providedExamples of best practice for sports organisationsPractical advice to fit your needs and capacityFrom experienced professionals who get resultsWho should attend Anyone involved in running or managing a sports club or community organisation in Kirklees that is: Involved in delivering any type of community sport / physical activity (can be affiliated or not affiliated to a National Governing Body)Supporting your local community as an un/constituted group, charity, social enterprise or community benefit societyGenerating an income of up to £500kWe are particularly interested in supporting volunteers, managers, staff and trustees from sports clubs running in the Kirklees area. About the session This workshop, led by Voluntary Action Leeds will be delivered by Rob Greenland, from The Social Business. Rob has worked with social enterprises and third sector organisations for over 25 years - specialising in offering support around environmental issues and climate action. He co-founded Zero Waste Leeds in 2018, and helped to set up a number of projects with social and environmental impacts, including Leeds School Uniform Exchange. Figure by the Sea in Pastels: Janette Reynolds | Calder Art
Jun 7, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Huddersfield
About the workshop
In this workshop, you will learn how to create a lovely sea scene (see reference photo below), including a little girl using soft pastel to create a soft focus background and pastel pencils to create the finer details. The techniques you learn will enable you to create your own paintings with a variety of subjects. Both of the paintings featured have been created using
Pastelmat paper
which has a lightly sanded surface. This allows the application of multiple layers of pastel using blending techniques and pastel pencil to create details on top. Participants are advised to use this paper unless they are familiar with pastel and layering using other papers. Single sheets of Pastelmat paper are available to purchase from Calder Art Supplies on the day of the workshop in addition to the
Sofft tool sponge applicators
used to achieve perfect blending.
The reference photograph will be provided.
You will be shown how to create this seaside scene step by step.
Participants will also be given access to a real-time video of the creation of this painting after the workshop,
which can be viewed at your leisure.
It can be used to help with adding detail and refining your painting after the workshop as well as providing recorded detailed explanations of the processes and techniques we used.

Urban Sketching Workshop with John Harrison | Calder Art
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Huddersfield
Workshop Details
Urban sketching workshop… Since its humble beginnings in 2007, the
Urban Sketching*
movement has grown into a massively popular phenomenon, connecting sketchers from all over the globe, who share their work, to support and inspire one another and sketchers everywhere.
From the Urban Sketchers Manifesto
We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation
Our drawings are a record of time and place.
We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
We support each other and draw together.
Following a brief introduction in the studio, we'll venture out into the town centre as a group to select a suitable location for sketching: this session will last a couple of hours, then after lunch, we can either then go out again to a different spot, or stay in the studio to develop your morning's sketches with added watercolour washes. John will be on hand during all this to guide and suggest ways of looking at what can be a daunting prospect in order to edit it down into a realisable sketch.
*This event is not endorsed by, nor an official event
About the Artist
John Harrison - Yorkshire born and bred - and proud of it.
John produces drawings and then adds colour in watercolour washes, not too dissimilar to a traditional painter. He will often start with a pencil drawing, add watercolour washes and then add ink lines over the top, but he usually starts with a line drawing in ink, or more often, a sketch.
He is an active Urban Sketcher - meeting up with other artists at a wide variety of locations to ‘show the world, one drawing at a time’ (a direct quote from the Urban Sketchers’ website).
The inspiration for much of his work is to be found within Yorkshire’s borders, and running a close second, the English Lake District: townscapes, landscapes (as long as there’s a building of some sort!), walls, hamlets, villages, ports and harbours as his main subjects. He's always looking for a different viewpoint of familiar places – a dynamic angle, with strong light and shade, which helps the drawing come alive.
John has a regular monthly feature in 'Dalesman' magazine showcasing his 'Line Drawing With Colour' and has work displayed in galleries across Yorkshire with many originals in private collections both here and in the USA and Canada.
John was a participant in 2017's Sky Arts Landscape Artists of the Year competition and undertakes commissions for large corporate clients and private individuals.
He has only just recently appeared on 2022 edition of Watercolour Challenge on Channel 5.
Materials Provided
Calder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:
1 x Table Top Easel
1 x MDF Board in various sizes
1 x Paint Pot
1 x Palette or Plate
Limited sundry products are also available if you forget anything.
Materials to Bring
A sketchbook: any shape, size,
Quality drawing tools: pens, pencils, twigs dipped in ink, Paints: whatever medium you want - John will be demonstrating his line and wash style, which utilises waterproof ink pens, and watercolour paint.Brushes: whatever size you have, larger brushes(size 8 and above) will be best for loose expressive washes.
Paper: Good quality watercolour paper in loose sheets, pads or blocks. John’s favoured brand is Saunders Waterford 300g rough in a quarter imperial size (approx. 15” x 11”) but any equivalent good quality paper will do. The paper we choose to paint on is the foundation of our work—and like a house, a good foundation is critical for the success of a painting: good quality paper is of great importance, especially for the beginner who is learning.
All materials are available online at
www.calderartsupplies.co.uk
. Or you can pick these up instore before the class begins.

Full-Day Foraging Course, Huddersfield | Dean Wood
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Huddersfield
This course is designed to be an introduction to foraging, focusing on giving you the knowledge and confidence to start and fast-track your foraging journey, but it covers many more species than on a half-day course and goes into greater depth. It also comes with a delicious 3-course foraged lunch! As always with my courses, children under 12 come free (within reason, and please let me know in advance), and well-behaved dogs on a lead are more than welcome.
What to expect
The day begins just before 10 AM with a casual, relaxed meet and greet. We then take a
two-and-a-half-hour walk (covering one to two miles)
around a beautiful ancient woodland and some grassland, stopping regularly to discuss, gather and/or eat the many
edible goodies
we find along the way, whether that be foliage, flowers, fruits, nuts or mushrooms! What we’ll find depends on the time of year.
The morning session will cover:
A
brief introduction
to myself and foraging in general.
Finding and discussing
around 20 species
common across the UK that have food uses.
How to identify
the species we come across.
Information about
toxic species to avoid
.
Foraging laws and principles
to ensure you forage legally, safely and responsibly.
Trying a couple of
pre-prepared wild food-based samples
!
We’ll then have a
3-course lunch, which will include some foraged goodies
and may even include some of what we’ve gathered from the morning! If it is raining during the lunch part of the day a tarp shelter is provided.
After a delicious
taste of the wild
, we move on to the afternoon session, which includes:
A practical walk-through of
my favourite foraging books
and how best to use them.
Finding and discussing
at least 10 further species
common across the UK that have food uses.
Foraging for non-food uses
, such as medicinal uses, and finding natural plant fibres to make natural string or rope!
Learning about “forest bathing” and the
importance of trees from a foraging perspective
.
Going deeper on some of the topics we covered in the morning, including identification skills and toxicity.
We will aim to
finish around 3:30 – 4:00 PM
.
Across the day, we will cover about 3.5 miles and certainly no more than 4 miles. The route has some hilly areas involving up-and-down sections, but we’ll go at a steady pace.
After the course, I will send a follow-up
email to participants with a summary of the species we found
and other useful information, including a summary of my
recommended books
for further reading.
Making foraging fun and safe
Foraging is fun and fascinating, with so many benefits it's unbelievable. It's as safe as anything when approached with the right level of caution, awareness, and knowledge. It’s important to realise however that foraging can be dangerous IF you approach it with a lack of caution (recklessness), and/or a lack of awareness of the risks and the respect nature deserves. During the course, I will show you how to approach foraging in a way whereby you don't just minimise but eliminate all risks, so you are free to enjoy the multitude of benefits that foraging brings into your life - and there are many!
Log in to nature
The experience has foraging at its heart, but it will also immerse you in nature and facilitate a connection to nature, leading to many physical and mental health benefits.
Humans have been foraging as a way to survive for hundreds of thousands of years. Before farming, this was how we survived – finding what nature provided in harmony with the seasons and the land. This period before farming forms over 95 per cent of our existence as a species, so to our brains and bodies, foraging is incredibly natural – this is one of the reasons it feels so good!
I believe that people and society would benefit enormously from taking a subtle step towards nature and a simultaneous step back from technology and our digital world. Foraging is one of the best ways to disconnect from our busy modern lives of emails, social media and technology, and reconnect with nature and our ancestral roots. During this course we will
log off from the modern world and log in to nature!
Meeting point and parking
For this course, we'll meet by the Public Footpath sign/entrance to Dean Wood on Deyne Road (HD4 7ET), which is very close to where Deyne Road meets Garforth Street. Please see the “dropped pin” Google Maps location below that will take you to the meeting and starting point:
Dropped pin:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/3ML1rRpykE8ZbsUb8?g_st=ic
Off-road parking is available on Deyne Road and many nearby streets.
I will be waiting at the meeting point from 9:55 AM.
I recommend you bring
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Ideally bring some waterproofs unless the weather forecast indicates a 0% chance of rain for the whole day. Our route will cover about 3.5 miles and certainly no more than 4 miles. Parts of the route may be muddy and involve walking through wet grass and up and down hills, so please ensure you have appropriate footwear. I highly recommend sturdy and waterproof walking/hiking shoes to avoid wet socks and navigate the terrain comfortably.
Your phone but only for the camera function should you wish to take any photos/videos/notes. I will however send out an email at the end of the course with a list of the species we come across.
A snack and refreshment of some kind if you wish, though note lunch and some refreshments are provided, so this isn’t essential but just something to bring if you think you might like it as an extra energy boost at some point during the day!
Toilets
As I’m sure you can appreciate with the nature of the environment we will be in, there are no official toilets at any point along the route, so there are a couple of options available for toilets:
Embracing what I call a “wild wee” (there will be plenty of secluded and private places to go).
Driving to the nearest public toilets during the lunch part of the day – there will be time to do this if needed and/or if you prefer. I will advise on the nearest accessible toilets on the day, for example there is a supermarket just a 6 minute drive away.
Dietary requirements
Please let me know if you have any dietary requirements for the lunch part of the day,
such as allergies (e.g. nuts, gluten, etc.) or dietary preferences (e.g. vegan, etc.).
About me
The Forager Within, founded by James Hill, runs public and private foraging courses across Yorkshire and Manchester. His love of foraging started on nature walks with his parents, where picking wild food was just a way of life. In adulthood, James hit a low point in 2015 which re-ignited a passion for foraging. By the Spring of 2016, foraging was a hobby, an obsession, and then in 2022, a business with a mission to connect people to nature and improve physical and mental health in the process.
