For several months affect lab has been prototyping a new Bloody Beautiful project: Hot Flash Dance Clash (try saying that fast ten times). Where original hip-hop dance-offs focused on competition and self-expression, Bloody Beautiful uses dance as a tool for empowerment. Smart technology is playing a growing role in how we manage our health—for example, by using heat sensors to track menstrual cycles and hot flashes. We trust these apps with our (very intimate) data and follow the algorithms that tell us which symptoms we’re likely to experience on any given day. But many cycle-tracking apps are designed with a hetero- and cis-normative lens, ignoring the diverse needs of different bodies. And most free apps don’t ensure the data privacy of their users, which is especially concerning in a time when reproductive rights are under serious threat. With Hot Flash Dance Clash, we want to highlight the physical experiences of people with cycles and celebrate them in a way that allows them to shape their own narrative—through dancing! Inspired by data tracking of menstruating and menopausal bodies, we’ve been hacking temperature sensors with our extraordinary collaborators. Feminist interaction designer Patricia Nagtzaam has been creating cyborg-style heat-sensor wearables that sync with an app and data collector developed by creative coder Frank Bosma. 'Bonsaika Suite': a suite written and played for the bonsaist, also known as bonsaika. These are the people who cut, shape, bend, prune and care for the same tree for years. In short: people who know from the start that it will take a long time, and who start anyway. With this project, Ruben Drenth wants to introduce his audience to the beauty of bonsai and the attention it requires, but can also bring about. On the other hand, he also wants to show that you can mindfully fly off the handle and seek out the sharp edges. It's not just peace and quiet that counts! Together with double bassist Daniël Muskitta, he plays this suite in its entirety and takes you into the sound world of bonsaiists, full of improvisation, Philicorda organ, synthesizer and ambient soundscapes. NERD_FUNK is a kaleidoscopic exploration of the far-reaching influence of social media on our visual and digital culture. Divided into five immersive chapters, three in VR and two audiovisual and spatial, artists Ali Eslami and Mamali Shafahi, assisted by Pensive Vivifier, present the extensive research they worked on for seven years, from April 4 at MU Hybrid Art House. Through a virtual entity they created, which they called nerd_funk, Eslami and Shafahi collected the Instagram Stories of more than 1,000 people from 2018. All those dedicated but also critical creators were at the forefront of creative use of the platform. They filled their Instagram feeds with an unending stream of images through which a new aesthetic emerged. This archive became the basis for the five NERD_FUNK storylines, each reflecting an aspect of the quirky Instagram culture. But if anything is changing fast, it is internet culture, that's what the makers of NERD_FUNK are well aware of. To keep up with these developments, they asked Marijn Bril, curator specialized in digital culture, to create a portal that reads like a kind of social media library. That portal - full of books, images, sites and five works by young makers that in turn also loosely refer to the five storylines - forms the entrance/exit to the worlds called NERD_FUNK. So get ready for an immersive trip that both throws you back into the boundless hybridity of the post-digital, pre-covid era and propels you into the chaotic post-all now. A state of being in which the lines between public and private are completely shifted and new combinations of narcissism and voyeurism reign supreme. On December 2nd, from 12:00 to 17:00, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven will host the cosmic radio: sonic installation by the Shock Forest Group. This multidisciplinary team is dedicated to exploring the past, present, and future of radio through collective listening, cosmic sound, and the potential for revolutionary impact. As part of their ongoing research, the group will be stationed at the Van Abbemuseum from November 13th to December 3rd, studying the medium and building multiple antennas within the museum on December 2nd. These antennas will create a sonic map of electromagnetic waves with extremely low frequencies that can penetrate even the thickest layers, such as concrete buildings. By experiencing this sonic installation, visitors will hear new sounds that bridge the gap between the museum and distant frequencies produced thousands of kilometers away. The Shock Forest Group consists of seven active members with backgrounds in music, data research, ecology, design, and communication. Their names are Katya Abazajian, Sheryn Akiki, Axel Coumans, Susanna Gonzo, Nicolás Jaar, Daria Kiseleva, and Jelger Kroese.
