Exhibitions
The exhibition *Bonjour Monsieur Gauguin: Circles of Post-Impressionists and Symbolists* will open on October 30th at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, marking the first major exhibition of Gauguin's work in Hungary. The exhibition's most striking feature is its list of borrowers. Nearly forty museums and collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), MoMA, the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d'Orsay (Paris), the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), Tate Modern (London), and Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid), have sent their works to Budapest. However, it is not a solo exhibition solely about Gauguin. The exhibition unfolds along the route of his life: from Paris and Île-de-France, to Brittany and Arles, then to Martinique and Tahiti, and finally to the Marquesas Islands. You can see how he gradually moved away from naturalism, then from Impressionism, and towards large blocks of color. Works by Courbet, Pissarro, Monet, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Bernard, and Sérusier are interspersed throughout, allowing us to perceive who influenced him, who he debated with, and how he gradually forged his own path. The curator is Judit Geskó—she also curated the Monet exhibition over twenty years ago, the Van Gogh exhibition in 2006, and the Cézanne exhibitions in 2012 and 2021. The Budapest Museum's series of major Impressionist exhibitions over the past two decades has earned a strong reputation in Europe, and this Gauguin exhibition is a continuation of that series and a highlight of the museum's 120th anniversary celebrations. Therefore, this is not simply a trip to "see Gauguin," but rather a journey through Gauguin to revisit the path of European art's transition to modernity in the latter half of the 19th century.
