Leila will be joined in conversation by author Ingrid Rojas Contreras and will sign copies of her book after the presentation. Click here to pre-order The Girls Who Grew Big From the author of Oprah's Book Club pick and New York Times bestseller Nightcrawling, here is an astonishing new novel about the joys and entanglements of a fierce group of teenage mothers in a small town on the Florida panhandle. Adela Woods is sixteen years old and pregnant. Her parents banish her from her comfortable upbringing in Indiana to her grandmother’s home in the small town of Padua Beach, Florida. When she arrives, Adela meets Emory, who brings her newborn to high school, determined to graduate despite the odds; Simone, mother of four-year-old twins, who weighs her options when she finds herself pregnant again; and the rest of the Girls, a group of outcast young moms who raise their growing brood in the back of Simone’s red truck. The town thinks the Girls have lost their way, but really they are finding it: looking for love, making and breaking friendships, and navigating the miracle of motherhood and the paradox of girlhood. Full of heart and life and hope, set against the shifting sands of these friends’ secrets and betrayals, The Girls Who Grew Big confirms Leila Mottley’s promise and offers an explosive new perspective on what it means to be a young woman. LEILA MOTTLEY is the author of the novel Nightcrawling, an Oprah’s Book Club pick and New York Times bestseller, and the poetry collection woke up no light. Megan Greenwell's BAD COMPANY In Store Discussion and Book Signing | Mrs Dalloway's

Jun 25, 2025 (UTC-8)
Berkeley

Literary Arts
A timely work of singular reportage and a damning indictment of the private equity industry told through the stories of four American workers whose lives and communities were upended by the ruinous effects of private equity takeovers. Click Here to preorder a copy of Bad Company.Private equity runs our country, yet few Americans have any idea how ingrained it is in their lives. Private equity controls our hospitals, daycare centers, supermarket chains, voting machine manufacturers, local newspapers, nursing home operators, fertility clinics, and prisons. The industry even manages highways, municipal water systems, fire departments, emergency medical services, and owns a growing swath of commercial and residential real estate. Private equity executives, meanwhile, are not only among the wealthiest people in American society, but have grown to become modern-day barons with outsized influence on our politics and legislation. CEOs of firms like Blackstone, Carlyle, KKR, and Apollo are rewarded with seats in the Senate and on the boards of the country’s most august institutions; meanwhile, entire communities are hollowed out as a result of their buyouts. Workers lose their jobs. Communities lose their institutions. Only private equity wins. Acclaimed journalist Megan Greenwell’s Bad Company unearths the hidden story of private equity by examining the lives of four American workers that were devastated as private equity upended their employers and communities: a Toys R Us floor supervisor, a rural doctor, a local newspaper journalist, and an affordable housing organizer. Taken together, their individual experiences also pull back the curtain on a much larger project: how private equity reshaped the American economy to serve its own interests, creating a new class of billionaires while stripping ordinary people of their livelihoods, their health care, their homes, and their sense of security. In the tradition of deeply human reportage like Matthew Desmond’s Evicted, Megan Greenwell pulls back the curtain on shadowy multibillion dollar private equity firms, telling a larger story about how private equity is reshaping the economy, disrupting communities, and hollowing out the very idea of the American dream itself. Timely and masterfully told, Bad Company is a forceful rebuke of America’s most consequential, yet least understood economic forces. MEGAN GREENWELL is a journalist who has written or edited for publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, New York Magazine, WIRED, and ESPN. She is also the deputy director of the Princeton Summer Journalism Program, a workshop and college access initiative for students from low-income backgrounds. A Berkeley native, she lives in Brooklyn with her husband and their pug. MIKE ISAAC is a technology reporter at the New York Times whose Uber coverage won the Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished business reporting. He writes frequently about Uber, Facebook, and other Silicon Valley giants for the Times, and appears often on CNBC and MSNBC. He lives in Oakland. THIS EVENT is free but registration is requested. Registration ends at 6:00 pm on June 25. BECAUSE SEATING is limited, please register only if you plan to attend. DUE TO SPACE limitations, we may not be able to accommodate every person at an event, so early registration is encouraged. WALK-INS will be accommodated only if space allows. Join us at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore on Friday, June 27 at 7:00 PM when New York author Vivienne Chang and local illustrator Eugenia Yoh return to present their brand new picture book What If We.... The pair will sign copies of their book after the presentation. Click Here to preorder a copy of What If We...In this charming sibling bond picture book, a young boy fights boredom by imagining all the adventures he could have, but forgets that he has a built-in adventure partner right by his side. It’s only the second day of summer, and Max is completely out of things to do. As he cycles through a series of fantastical ideas, Max can’t stop thinking how much more summer fun he could have–only if he were somewhere else! But by not being present, could Max be missing out on the most special adventure of all? And is he missing out on someone to share his adventures with? This funny and imaginative story highlights the specialness of a sibling bond and reminds readers of all ages that sometimes the best things can be found right where you are. EUGENIA YOH and VIVIENNE CHANG met as students at Washington University in St. Louis and now live 2,555.87 miles apart from each other. Eugenia lives in Berkeley, California, and makes books for kids. Vivienne lives in New York City and makes digital products for grown-ups. In addition to What If We..., Vivienne and Eugenia are also the authors of This is Not My Home. They hope to continue telling stories that share universal ideas through humor. When they are not discussing their next book concept, they can be found in a forest sharing ideas on what it means to be in your twenties, which is a very confusing time, to say the least. Miranda Spivack's BACKROOM DEALS IN OUR BACKYARDS In Store Event & Signing | Mrs Dalloway's

Join us at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore on Thursday, July 17 when award winning journalist and author Miranda S. Spivack comes to present her new book Backroom Deals in Our Backyards: How Government Secrecy Harms Our Communities and the Local Heroes Fighting Back. Miranda will be joined in conversation by Victoria Baranetsky and will sign copies of her book after the presentation. Click Here to order a copy of Backroom Deals In Our Backyards. Most Americans are likely to encounter the effects of government malfeasance or neglect close to home—from their governors, mayors, town councils, school boards, police, and prosecutors. In fact, deals shrouded in darkness are regularly made at the state and local levels, often the result of closed-door discussions between governments and industry without any scrutiny whatsoever from the public. Too often, as this groundbreaking new work of investigative reporting reveals, residents are intentionally kept on the outside, struggling to get information about significant issues affecting their communities—from car crashes and dirty drinking water, to failing safety gear—until the backroom deals are done and it’s too late to challenge them. A work of riveting narrative nonfiction based on years of original reporting, Backroom Deals in Our Backyards tells the story of five “accidental activists”—people from across the United States who started questioning why their local and state governments didn’t protect them from issues facing their communities and why there was a frightening lack of transparency surrounding the way these issues were resolved. The secret deals, lies, and corruption they uncover shake their faith in government but move them to action. For readers of Chain of Title and Superman’s Not Coming, Spivack’s revealing take on a hidden dimension of American politics will outrage and educate anyone who cares about the forces shaping their own communities. MIRANDA S. SPIVACK is a veteran reporter and editor who specializes in stories about government accountability and secrecy. She spent twenty years as an award-winning editor and reporter for the Washington Post. She previously worked as the Washington reporter for the Springfield (Mass.) Daily News and The Hartford Courant and was the deputy editor of a chain of weekly newspapers before joining The Washington Post. She is a former Fulbright Scholar and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Journalism at DePauw University. VICTORIA BARANETSKY is general counsel at The Center for Investigative Reporting, which publishes the Mother Jones magazine and the Reveal radio show. Prior to CIR, Victoria worked at The New York Times, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and the Wikimedia Foundation. She has also taught Berkeley Law School as an adjunct professor. Join us at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore on Wednesday, July 23 at 7:00 PM when Bridget A. Lyons comes to the store to share her new book Entwined: Dispatches from the Intersection of Species. Bridget will be joined by Leigh Marz for the conversation and will sign copies of her book after the presentation. Click Here to preorder a copy of Entwined. What can octopuses’ nine brains teach us about climate resilience? How can great horned owls’ keen hearing illuminate relationship dynamics?Does playing with kelp cultivate respect for the value of life? What can our 8.7 million “more-than-human” neighbors teach us about life?Entwined: Dispatches from the Intersection of Species explores these questions through a collection of sixteen original essays by Bridget A. Lyons, a wilderness guide, traveler, and explorer who has encountered countless animals and plants in their native environments. From Alaska to Honduras, Lyons’ stories are braided with careful observation, scientific research, and wonder to foster the connection between us and our nonhuman neighbors. By focusing on the Anthropocene—the era during which human activities have had substantial impacts on the functioning of our planet—Lyons highlights the need to protect the planet’s quickly diminishing diversity. Each essay within Entwined seeks to keep nonhuman stories in the foreground, with Lyons’ personal experiences acting as a backdrop. Some of these moments include navigating icebergs in Alaska while researching the nesting strategies of common eiders, witnessing the apparent demise of a humpback whale on the Baja Peninsula while instructing a wilderness course, and observing ibex while trail running the Alps. While each piece can stand on its own as a literary examination of a creature’s life and a facet of the human experience, collectively, the narrative invites readers to consider what they have in common with even the most seemingly foreign of species, such as sea stars and sponges. Entwined rests on the belief that when we take the time to know unfamiliar creatures, we are more likely to alter our choices and behaviors in ways that ensure their continued existence on the planet. More information can be found at www.entwinedbook.com . BRIDGET A. LYONS is a writer, editor, explorer, and artist living with gratitude in Santa Cruz, CA, the unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe. Lyons graduated from Harvard University and holds an MFA from Northern Arizona University. Bridget’s award-winning essays have appeared in Crazyhorse, The Common, Flyway, Chautauqua, Catamaran, Cold Mountain Review, Tahoma Literary Review, and other journals. Find out more at www.bridgetalyons.com. Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore presents a very special evening at The David Brower Center when award winning and bestselling author Rebecca Solnit launches her new book No Straight Road Takes You There: Essays for Uneven Terrain. Rebecca will be joined in what is sure to be a lively discussion by special guest(s) to be announced and she will sign copies of her book after the presentation. This is a ticketed event with Rebecca's book bundled with your admission ticket. Tickets are available for one book and one seat for $21.95 (+ taxes and fees) or one book and two seats for $26.95 ( + taxes and fees). “This is a book of fierce and poetic thinking—and a guide for navigating a rapidly changing, non-linear, living world.” —Merlin Sheldrake, author of Entangled Life In the spirit of her bestselling book Hope in the Dark, Rebecca Solnit explores how our actions can shape the future and the liberatory possibilities of embracing uncertainty. Beginning with an essay about a three-hundred-year-old violin and what it can tell us about forests, abundance, and climate, and ending with one about a prisoner dreaming of seeing the ocean, No Straight Road Takes You There deftly bridges the political and the literary, offering unique insights, nuanced understanding, and inspiration for the challenging work ahead. In her latest essay collection, the award-winning author explores climate change, feminism, democracy, hope, and power and its abuse. Throughout she asks us to heed the stories we tell or have been told, and the ways those stories can be, or should be changed. Solnit offers a reappraisal of the value of indirect consequences, an embrace of unpredictability, slowness, and imperfection in the politics of how to change the world. “I've tried to find other ways of seeing and to prize the migratory routes ideas take,” Solnit writes in the introduction, “the way that hope is most often grounded in memory, because you can't see the future but you can understand the patterns and possibilities if you know the past.” REBECCA SOLNIT is the author of more than twenty books, including Orwell’s Roses; Hope in the Dark; Men Explain Things to Me; A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster; and A Field Guide to Getting Lost. A longtime climate and human rights activist, she serves on the boards of Oil Change International and Third Act. THIS EVENT will start promptly at 7:00 PM so please be on time. DOORS will open at 6:15 PM COPIES OF Rebecca's books will be available for puchase at the event. Information Source: Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore | eventbrite
