Welcome to the Starting Strength Boise Open House! Strength training can be incredibly beneficial for runners, even though it might not seem directly related at first. Here's how it helps: Improved Running Economy: Strength training can help improve your running form and efficiency. Stronger muscles, particularly in the core and legs, help maintain a more stable posture, reduce unnecessary energy expenditure, and make each stride more efficient. Injury Prevention: Running involves repetitive impact, which can lead to overuse injuries. Strength training builds resilience in muscles, tendons, and ligaments, reducing the risk of injuries like shin splints, IT band syndrome, or runner’s knee. It helps correct muscle imbalances and increases joint stability. Power and Speed: By building strength, particularly in the glutes, hamstrings, and quads, you can generate more force with each stride, potentially improving your speed and power. Stronger muscles can also help you push through fatigue during races or long runs. Better Endurance: Muscular endurance is important for long-distance running. Stronger muscles can sustain effort for longer, helping you avoid muscle fatigue and maintaining good form throughout your run. Posture and Core Stability: A strong core helps maintain proper posture, which in turn enhances running efficiency. A strong, stable core prevents excess movement and helps conserve energy over long distances. Balance and Coordination: Strength exercises, especially those targeting the lower body and core, can improve your balance and coordination. This is crucial for running on uneven surfaces or when fatigued during a race. It’s all about making your muscles work more effectively, so you can run faster and longer with less effort. Boise
Concerts
The Alex Sjobeck Quintet will be featuring award-winning Seattle-based saxophonist and composer Steve Treseler. Filling out the band, is notable Mountain West musicians: Derek Ganong - Trumpet Alex Sjobeck - Piano Braun Khan - Bass Brian Claxton - Drums The show will be opened by Boise State University's Gene Harris All Stars trio and combo. These combos are audition-only ensembles of talented high school jazz students from around the valley. Steve Treseler is an award-winning Seattle-based saxophonist, composer, and innovative leader in teaching improvised music. Hailed as a "firebrand of the tenor saxophone” (Earshot Jazz), DownBeat describes his music as “beautifully crafted...whether free, through-composed, or somewhere in between.” Steve performs and leads improvisation workshops throughout North America and Europe, and has performed at Birdland, Blue Note Hawaii, and live on NPR’s Jazz Night in America. Treseler’s bold and collaborative approach to improvised music began to take shape during his early adolescence immersed in the hypnotic rhythm of Seattle’s grunge scene, and high school years fascinated with the spontaneity and virtuosity of classic jazz records. Treseler’s musical voice crystallized during his studies at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he was exposed to an eclectic range of improvised music and the mentorship of jazz legends Jerry Bergonzi, Bob Brookmeyer, and George Garzone. Today, Treseler is embedded in the jazz and creative music scene in the Pacific Northwest, performing with the Jim Knapp Orchestra, Johnaye Kendrick, Jay Thomas, and as a leader in his own notable groups. Treseler’s six recording projects as a leader include collaborations with the lauded trumpeter Ingrid Jensen: Center Song, which reached #53 on the JazzWeek Radio Charts, and Invisible Sounds: For Kenny Wheeler on Whirlwind Recordings, which was named one of DownBeat's best albums of 2019 and praised by the New York Times as "lyrical and songlike, whether moving at a quick clip or drifting as slowly as cloud cover. . .a standout album." His latest album, The Grind with In Motion Quartet, will be released in the fall of 2024. Embracing eclectic sounds beyond jazz, Treseler collaborates with songwriters Damien Jurado and Lacey Bown, layering woodwind textures to their poignant storytelling. He explores experimental sounds with Scrambler Soundpainting Ensemble, a multidisciplinary artist collective, and Radiant Fields, a solo project for saxophone and electronic effects. As a teaching artist, Treseler is the founder of Infinite Improvisation, offering community-centered workshops and retreats that draw from improv theater games, conducted improvisation, and the aural tradition of jazz. Seattle JazzED calls his workshops, “revolutionary. . . Steve is an expert at teaching improvisation in a fun, encouraging way.” Steve has led workshops and artist residencies throughout the U.S. and Europe, including at Berklee College of Music, Hawaii’s Pacific Music Institute, Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, and in the Austrian Alps with Più Piano. Steve is the author of two instructional books, the Amazon Bestseller Creativity Triggers for Musicians (2017) and The Living Jazz Tradition: A Creative Guide to Improvisation and Harmony (CMA Press, 2014), which are used in music schools worldwide. Treseler graduated with a distinction in performance from New England Conservatory and was named “Outstanding Jazz Soloist” in the DownBeat Student Music Awards. He holds a Master of Music in Jazz Studies and Improvised Music from the University of Washington where he was a teaching assistant for Cuong Vu. Treseler is a Conn Selmer performing artist. The Lucky Losers | The Sapphire Room at The Riverside Hotel

Boise
Concerts
Nominated for THREE Independent Blues Awards in 2023 & winners of FIVE Independent Blues Awards in 2021 (including “Artist of the Year” Cathy Lemons & “Song of the Year” Godless Land), The Lucky Losers are San Francisco’s no. 1 touring band. Their music is a throwback to the hybrid of soul, blues, rock, gospel, and country that emerged in the late 1960’s with impassioned vocal performances, electrifying musical interplay, and powerful harmonica. Described as “the finest female blues vocalist in the U.S” [Real Blues - 2010], fiery Dallas-born entertainer Cathy Lemons has a velvet voice with a gritty edge and the rebel conviction of a woman risen from the ashes. New Jersey native Phil Berkowitz "has earned renown as one of the West Coast’s most distinctive harp players, as well as for his sharp, resonant tenor" [Living Blues - 2018]. The stark contrast between incandescent Lemons and elegant Berkowitz makes for a captivating musical union, breathing new life into American songwriting tradition and the vanishing art of duet singing. Since 2015, The Lucky Losers have completed numerous national tours, performing on stages in over 46 states in the USA. Their artistic achievements have garnered 6 award wins, 25 award nominations, & two International Songwriting Competition prizes as Finalists. Presented by The Idaho Blues Society. This IBS show was supported in part by a Touring Artist grant from CREATIVE WEST and the National Endowment for the Arts. Join us for dinner and drinks ! About the Book: When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond. While many narrative set pieces of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remain in place (floods and storms, stumbling across both unexpected death and unexpected treasure in the myriad stopping points along the river's banks, encountering the scam artists posing as the Duke and Dauphin...), Jim's agency, intelligence and compassion are shown in a radically new light. About the Book: In the tradition of Legends & Lattes , comes a cozy fantasy steeped in sapphic romance about one of the Queen's private guards and a powerful mage who want to open a bookshop and live happily ever after...if only the world would let them. All Reyna and Kianthe want is to open a bookshop that serves tea. Worn wooden floors, plants on every table, firelight drifting between the rafters... all complemented by love and good company. Thing is, Reyna works as one of the Queen's private guards, and Kianthe is the most powerful mage in existence. Leaving their lives isn't so easy. But after an assassin takes Reyna hostage, she decides she's thoroughly done risking her life for a self-centered queen. Meanwhile, Kianthe has been waiting for a chance to flee responsibility-all the better that her girlfriend is on board. Together, they settle in Tawney, a town nestled in the icy tundra near dragon country, and open the shop of their dreams. What follows is a cozy tale of mishaps, mysteries, and a murderous queen throwing the realm's biggest temper tantrum. In a story brimming with hurt/comfort and quiet fireside conversations, these two women will discover just what they mean to each other... and the world.
