Artist Statement & Bio Writing | The Mill Gallery

Artist Statement & Bio Writing | The Mill Gallery

Jul 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Winslow
Arts Fine Art
Do you dread writing about your work? You’re not alone. This workshop is designed to help artists of all disciplines craft clearer, more authentic artist statements and bios that reflect both their creative voice and professional identity. We’ll explore what makes an effective artist statement and how it can evolve depending on context—whether it’s for a funding application, exhibition, publication, or your website. You’ll be guided through exercises that help you identify the core themes, questions, and materials in your practice, and how to express them in a way that feels honest and engaging without becoming overly academic or abstract. In the second half, we’ll tackle writing your artist bio—short, punchy, and to the point, but still full of personality. You'll leave the session with a stronger sense of your artistic voice, a solid draft of your statement and bio, and tips for keeping them fresh and adaptable for future use. This is a relaxed, no-judgement space where experimentation and messy first drafts are encouraged. Bring a notebook, your past statements (if you have them), and an openness to rethinking how you present your practice. This workshop is heavily subsidised, but not free, thanks to the generous funding from Leeds Council. In order to keep the workshop accessible to all, we offer three ticket tiers based on your income: £5, £10, and £15 , plus the Eventbrite booking fee. We ask that you choose the ticket that best reflects what you can afford, so we can continue offering affordable opportunities for everyone. Your support helps us keep these sessions running for the creative community. About the Project The Resilient Artist Cohort is a free, artist-led development programme supporting six Leeds-based artists through mentoring, skill-sharing workshops, and hands-on exhibition experience. NOW TWICE A MONTH! On the 1st Friday of the month and the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Both 12pm-2.30pm. Change of venue to The Beech House as of April 2025. From the award-winning creator of ‘Bring Your Baby Guided London Walks’, ‘Bring Your Baby Pub Quizzes’ are fun, brain-stimulating daytime parent socials, which take place all over London, the South East, the South West and The Midlands. Team size is 6 maximum to make it fair on everyone. Quizzes take a slower pace than traditional ones. We are parents ourselves, and understand juggling a ‘baby brain’ with baby distractions! Toddlers and older children are welcome, but are the parent or carer's responsibility. Please bring suitable toys and games to entertain them while you quiz! We take two breaks to feed, change and chat, and questions are always repeated. Settle in with the picture round from 12pm, with a further five quiz rounds (including general knowledge, music, connection and themed) starting at 12.30pm until 2.30pm. Don’t panic if you’re a bit late - we repeat questions. A lunch menu including vegan and gluten-free options is available. Baby change is available, including our legendary mobile baby change which means you don't need to leave the quiz to change baby! A number of high chairs are also available. Prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places include items such as Prosecco, luxury chocolates and beauty boxes. Complimentary sweet treats for each table (sealed in packaging). Important notes: - Children are the responsibility of the parent or guardian, and must be monitored by them at all times. - We understand that the parent or guardian will want to keep sleeping babies close to their table in baby carriers (including, for example: prams, buggies or car seats). However if babies are awake we reserve the right to ask the parent or guardian to move their baby carrier into a designated area of the venue to meet health and safety requirements (such as clear access to fire exits and clear walkways). - Refunds or requests to move to a future event or date must be requested within 24 hours of the event commencing so that we can try to refill the space in adequate time. - On occasion we take photos or short video clips at our 'Bring Your Baby Pub Quizzes' or 'Bring Your Baby Guided London Walks'. By attending you are giving your permission for these to be used for Bring Your Baby Ltd promotional purposes. Any individual who we have taken a photograph of and published can request that any photographs are removed and deleted at any time. Gather in a friendly group with Lynette, The White Witch of Wiltshire, and Artist, Tamsin Loveday for this gentle, crafty workshop celebrating Lughnasadh, the Grain Harvest festival. We will make little bowls with warm terracotta oloured air-drying clay; pressing ears of corn and other shapse into the surface before draping the shape into a biodegradable bananna leaf bowl form. This can become an offering bowl for you home altar or sacred space, a container for you favourite crystals or jewellery, or simply a reminder of a well spent evening! We will hear about Lugh, the Celtic Sun God, who is known as the God of Crafts, making things and a job well made. Lynette will also talk about the practice of making offerings in historiacal and contemporary contexts. Lughnasadh is sometimes known as Lammas and is the first Harvest Festival in the Wheel of the Year. It is an abundant time of feasting and gratitude for the cornucopia of the grown harvest. This workshop is an opportunity to bring some creative joy to your celebration and make something truly personal imbued with your intentions. Lynette will lead us in a short welcoming and cleansing ritual to create a safe space and help us to set our intentions. She will talk a little about Lughnasadh, and about the practice of making offerings to set the scene. Lynette will guide us in setting intentions and share information about colours and symbols of the festival. Tamsin will talk a little about the process of working with the clay and support all creative aspects of the workshopp, making sure that we all have everything we need for a safe and companionable evening of crafting. Tamsin will demonstrate the process and we will try out the technique on postcard sized pieces of paper. We will roll out the clay and cut out a circle, press in ears of corn and other shapes to creative persinal and symbolic designs, before draping the clay into bowl forms. This not only profiles the clay into a 3D bowl shape but wil cradle our new bowls safely for transport home and support them while they dry and harden. Refreshments, materials and eventbrite fees are included in the ticket price. Gloves will be provided but please bring an apron. You will recieve materials to make a small slab formed bowl and a small pinch pot. This magical workshop will be hosted in the Barefoot Bindery Studio upstairs at Fisherton Mill, Salisbury. 2025 Willis-Fryling Family Reunion The Willis and Fryling families first coordinated their family reunions in 1984 and have continued the tradition forward. We gather every three years or so in Erie Pennsylvania and have a long weekend of fellowship and memories. The families have a heritage with many surnames prior to Willis and Fryling and many afterward. We gather to celebrate all of our common heritage and welcome newcomers through birth, marriage or long-lost cousins! Cultural Experiences
In this introductory workshop, we’ll explore the world of natural dyes using plants from our gardens and foraged from the fields and forests at Dancing Bear Farm. We’ll be working with the two types of natural fibers: cellulose (which includes cotton, linen, hemp, etc) and protein (silk, wool, etc) and covering fiber preparation, mordanting, dyeing, and finishing processes. Participants will make sample cards with different fiber types from each plant dye, learning how to take accurate, detailed notes to inform future projects. Students will also have the chance to dye a cotton bandana their color of choice. Come discover the wide array of natural colors that are easily grown in the garden and foraged from the landscape. We’ll be working with several easily grown and foraged dye plants including staghorn sumac, weld, sulfur cosmos, coreopsis, traditional madder and wild madder, marigolds, and hollyhocks. This workshop is hands-on, come ready to get a little messy in the garden and dye area! This is a two day workshop. Morning refreshments and lunches will be provided both days. Participants will learn: How to scour protein and cellulose fibers for dyeing Mordanting with alum sulfate and alum acetate Three main natural dye groups and how to identify their sources (including tannins for tans and browns, flavonoids for yellows and oranges, and anthraquinones for reds, pinks, oranges, and purples) Identifying dye materials in the field and garden Cultivating and preparing garden-grown and foraged dye plants Making a dye vat from fresh and dried plant materials (roots, leaves, and flowers) Modifying colors with iron after-bath Participant fee: $180 plus a $20 materials fee Overnight camping accomodations are available for $10/tentsite. Ages 16+ Berkley Heath is a natural dyer and printmaker fascinated by the sources and history of art materials. With a formal education and work background in ecological design and organic agriculture, she began growing dye plants nearly ten years ago and since then has cultivated a dye garden every year, processing the plants throughout the season into dyes, pigments, and inks to use in her work. Her work is grounded in these seasonal processes at her home in rural New Hampshire: spending time seeding, tending to plants, harvesting and making art materials as well as studying and experimenting with traditional surface design techniques with natural dyes on cloth. Natural dyeing is an incredible confluence of so many of her interests, from plant biology and organic chemistry, to design and ethnobotany, and she feels passionate about sharing this craft with others. She teaches workshops at craft schools and farms across New England, including Snow Farm in Williamsburg, MA and Sanborn Mills Farm in Sanbornton, NH. She believes that physical interaction with the landscape facilitates a sense of place, wellbeing, and stewardship of our natural world. https://www.berkleysierra.com/ Refund policy: a refund is available up to 30 days before the start of this event.
