Masterclass with Guillermo G. Peydró: Film on Art Join us for an exciting event with renowned filmmaker Guillermo G. Peydró where he will share his insights on the intersection of film and art. Get ready to be inspired and learn! Date: Thursday 5th December 2024 Time: 13:00-14:00 Location: Geoffrey Manton Building, Manchester Metropolitan University About this masterclass Since the 1940s, a whole series of filmmakers have consciously explored the possibilities of filming the arts, using diverse and often conflicting strategies. In my book Film on Art. From the Dramatisation of Painting to the Essay Film (“El cine sobre arte. De la dramatization de la pintura al cine-ensayo”, Shangrila, 2019), I propose seven options, each with pioneering experiments, theoretical debates, and subsequent detours. The seventh of these, the last in chronological order, is an essay film on art and brings together all the other experiments in a meta-reflexive form that uses the expressive tools of the literary essay. My work as a filmmaker falls within the last option, particularly my trilogy of political reactivation of Spanish works of art, which includes a film about painting (The Guernica Variations, 2012), another about architecture (City of Work, 2015) and a third piece on literature (The Tableau of Wonders, 2021). In this masterclass, I will briefly examine the characteristics of each of the trends. I will offer a brief description of the devices I use in my films, focusing on my essay-film on Cervantes in times of pandemics and fake news (The Tableau of Wonders, 2021). This event is linked to the screening that will take place on the same day at the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester:Vessels of Communication with Guillermo G Peydró. Free event but registration is required. About the director: Guillermo G. Peydró is a filmmaker and art historian. He has been a programmer at the Greenpoint Film Festival (Brooklyn, New York). He completed his PhD at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía on ‘film-essay on art’, in which he studied the forms of critical dialogue between film and the visual arts since the beginning of the 20th century, as well as their aesthetic, academic and political applications. His films have been screened in cinemas, museums, universities and cultural centres in Europe, North America and Latin America. Jason will be reading from and talking about his first non-fiction book, The Possibility of Tenderness, a personal history and migration tale narrated through the lens of plants and dreams. It’s also a people’s history of the land, a family saga, and an archival detective story through time. Marrying the local and the familial with global history and unfolding as a timely and immersive tale of land, environment, and the world of plants, The Possibility of Tenderness reveals how the history of a tiny rural village in a mountainous region of Jamaica is interlinked with that of modern Britain – and what that rural village can teach us about leisure, land ownership and reclamation today.
The event will open with a drinks reception and Jason and Monique will be happy to sign copies of their books, which will be available for purchase on the night – including advance copies of The Possibility of Tenderness, which is published later in March 2025.

Jason Allen-Paisant is a scholar, poet, and thinker shaping Afro-Diasporic futures through words and wisdom. He won the OCM Bocas Poetry Prize for his collection Thinking with Tress and the T.S. Eliot Prize and Forward Prize for Self-Portrait As Othello. His first non-fiction work is a fierce reclamation of a link with the land, roaming from Jamaican hills to the woodlands of Leeds. The Possibility of Tenderness is a book for readers of memoirs such as How To Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair and Robert Macfarlane’s nature writing. Jason is Professor in Critical Theory and Creative Writing at the University of Manchester.
Monique Roffey has life-long links to Trinidad and the Caribbean with five novels set in the region, drawing on family biography, history, witness testimony and contemporary life, with elements of “the marvellous real”. Her acclaimed novel The Mermaid of Black Conch won the 2020 Costa Book of the Year award and was translated into fourteen languages. She is an environmental activist and co-founded Writers Rebel inside Extinction Rebellion. Passiontide, in which four women spark revolution on a Caribbean island, was published in June 2024. Monique is Professor of Contemporary Fiction at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The event is presented in partnership between the Manchester Writing School, Manchester Poetry Library, Poetry Research Group and Migration and Postcolonial Studies (MAPS) research centre at Manchester Metropolitan University, with Cornerstone Imprints at Penguin Random House and Blackwell’s University Bookshop.
