Out of the Crate | Manchester Art Gallery
Nov 7, 2019–Dec 31, 2026 (UTC)
Manchester
Come and look behind the scenes of Manchester’s publicly owned sculpture collection. Part exhibition, part research space, Out of the Crate delves into the un-tapped history of the collection. This is an opportunity to investigate sculpture through access to stored collections and archival material. Find out what’s in store and how we look after it, help unlock hidden stories about works we know very little about and explore how artworks might encourage conversation.
We have about 400 sculptures from antiquity to the present day and, until recently, less than 5% were on display. As well as modern and contemporary works, there are 19th-century sculptures and works from earlier periods that have rarely been seen this century and are under-researched.
On display are a large range of materials including marble, bronze, wood, glass, ceramic and paper, a variety of sizes and shapes and different techniques of making. From bronze medals decorated with reliefs to large-scale free-standing 3D works, you can now see around 30% of the sculpture collection here. In terms of representation, we should also consider who has and hasn’t been included in the collection.

Imran Perretta: A Riot in Three Acts | HOME Manchester
Feb 22–Jun 8, 2025 (UTC)
Manchester
A Riot In Three Acts is a large-scale installation using the tropes and techniques of cinema, in the form of an expansive film set and cinematic score, to consider riots and civil uprisings that have occurred in response to systemic injustice experienced by marginalised communities. The exhibition provides a stage for the complex narratives that accompany such collective actions directed against the state, often spurred by racist policing, social deprivation, youth disenfranchisement and anti-war sentiment.Originally commissioned by and developed in residence at Somerset House Studios in London, the work evolves from Perretta’s experience as a young person during the UK riots in 2011. Initially a response to police violence in London, the riots became a national uprising brought on by an age of endless austerity, quickly spreading to Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and beyond.

Sh*tty Breaks: An evening with Ben Aitken at Waterstones Deansgate | Waterstones
Jun 2, 2025 (UTC+1)
Manchester
We are excited to welcome travel writer
Ben Aitken
to Deansgate, discussing his latest work
Sh*tty Breaks: A Celebration of Unsung Cities
.
The latest in a line of charming, eccentric and hilarious works—see also
The Gran Tour
,
A Chip Shop in Poznan
and
Dear Bill Bryson: Footnotes from a Small Island—
comes a powerful and delightful antidote to smug travelogues of popular places.
Joined in conversation by author and poet Jonny Rodgers, the pair will be discussing Ben's insightful trip around the UK's less frequented towns and the treasures that be found in these unlikely (and underrated!) places.
About
Sh*tty Breaks
Not everything that glitters is gold - which is why Ben Aitken gave London the cold shoulder and went to Preston instead.
Hailing from Portsmouth, Ben knew from experience that unfashionable places could be quietly brilliant. So, over the course of a year, the author of A Chip Shop in Poznan and The Gran Tour visited twelve of the least popular spots in the UK and Ireland for a city break. The motivation wasn’t to take the mickey or stick the boot in, but to seek out the good stuff, to uncover the gems, to have a nice time. By doing so, he hoped to demonstrate that anywhere – like anyone – can be interesting and nourishing and enjoyable if approached in the right fashion.
Ben went skiing in Sunderland, to the football in Wrexham, and fell in love with Dunfermline. He kissed an alpaca in Bradford, suffered jellied eels in Chelmsford, and had more craic in Limerick than was wise. The upshot is a celebration of the underdog; a hymn to the wrong direction; and evidencethat there’s no such thing as a shitty break. What’s more, by spreading its affection beyond the usual suspects (which are often overdone and overpriced), Sh*tty Breaks promotes a less expensive and more sustainable brand of travel.
By ghosting Bath and giving Lisbon the boot, the book champions the unsung in an algorithmic, over-signposted world dominated by celebs and hotspots. Cheeky weekend in Milton Keynes anyone?
"Driven both by a real love for people and an abiding sense of the ridiculous, Ben Aitken walks and talks his charming way around the unsung cities of the British Isles. For all that it is funny, and it really is, it is also an important love letter to ordinariness in all its forms which, in these needy times, is a precious thing. Funny and immensely thought provoking."—

Bunker Talk #151: Manchester Academy of Fine Arts | The Salutation Pub (Upstairs)
Jun 3, 2025 (UTC+0)
Manchester
Manchester Academy of Fine Arts MAFA presents a discussion on “Looking Back, Moving Forward - Creating, Collecting and Conserving Art in Manchester”. Contributors include Hannah Williamson, Curator of Fine Art at Manchester Art Gallery, Peter Davis, MAFA Archivist and Wendy Levy, Gallerist in Manchester for 40 years. Chairing the discussion will be Dr Fionna Barber, Reader in Art History in the Department of Art and Performance at Manchester School of Art. Hannah Williamson has been a Curator at Manchester Art Gallery for 12 years. Previously she worked at Hat Works, the hat museum in Stockport, and at the National Trust’s Quarry Bank Mill. She is interested in connecting industrial and social history with art history, and in exploring lesser-known art movements. Her curating cuts across time to make unexpected combinations, and her keenest professional pleasure is found in talking about art. Hannah has recently started a PhD in museum history at Manchester Metropolitan University. She lives in Macclesfield and serves on the board of trustees of Macclesfield Silk Museum. Peter Davis has been MAFA’s Archivist since 2022 and delivers talks on our archives. He is also a Northwest based professional artist whose paintings capture contemporary life, reflecting today’s societal narratives, including technology addiction, mental health, race and gender. His work is held in public collections, and he has exhibited widely including the John Moores Painting Prize 2020 and the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Prize 2024 at the National Portrait Gallery. As well as being a MAFA member, Peter also belongs to the Contemporary British Portrait Painters (CBPP) and Castlefield Gallery Associates. Wendy Levy is a patron of MAFA. Wendy’s career began in 1971 at the Pitcairn Galleries, Knutsford, founded and owned by Peter Burdett. Eventually she took on the gallery showing work by artists including Sir Matthew Smith, L.S. Lowry, and David Bomberg. Later, she went on to show work Ben Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson and many other St Ives artists. From 2000 until 2013, Wendy continued showing work in her gallery in Didsbury; exhibiting North West artists, including some Manchester Academicians; representing, nurturing and assisting in establishing their careers. She continues to promote artists by presenting exhibitions in her online gallery. This talk is a precursor to an exhibition by the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts at Manchester Cathedral entitled ‘Voyages’ ( July 2nd – August 31st 2025), where the idea of discovery through a voyage personal to the artists is reflected in their works. The catalogue accompanying the exhibition will feature contributions by the participants extracted from the Bunker Talks. Find out more about MAFA at www.mafa.org.uk Bunker Talks This event is part of Bunker Talks. Bunker Talks invite artists and researchers to talk about who they are and what they do. Curated by the Performance Research Group at Manchester School of Art, Bunker Talks explore geopolitical, ecological or economic concerns. The talks create space for critical encounters, presentations, provocation and dialogue. Originally conceived in the pandemic to explore how artists, writers, curators and researchers continued to make and share their work, live Bunker Talks now take place at The Salutation every month. Since 2020, over 145 talks have been hosted by Art & Performance Researchers and colleagues from across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. All talks are recorded, edited, captioned and then archived to create an online catalogue, capturing how artists, makers and curators think about the world today. Manchester Collective x Track Brewery: The Turning | Track Brewery & Taproom
Jun 4, 2025 (UTC+1)
Manchester
Under white noise and digital chatter, an ancient planetary pull…
It’s late spring when the evenings are starting to glow. On the horizon, the longest day of the year. Put the world on pause and lose yourself in a sound world where earthy Celtic folk flows into lively improvisations and brave, experimental new music.
Sisters Rakhi and Simmy Singh spent their early years in the Welsh countryside, immersed in a blend of traditional Indian music, Western classical and folk. Now, they thread together these diverse influences in this intimate performance for violin duo and electronics, drawing us into the mysterious rhythms of the natural world.
Nature may be a source of healing and inspiration, but our relationship with it is both precious and extremely fragile. ‘No One Is Too Small To Make A Difference’ is a journey in six parts, capturing the urgency of the environmental movement. Not just a lament for what’s lost, but ultimately a call for active hope and radical action.
The great turning is here and now – there’s no escaping it.

About
Homework
In Homework, Geoff Dyer reflects on his childhood and what it means to come of age in England in the 60s and 70s, in a country shaped by the aftermath of the Second World War but accelerating towards change. He was born in Cheltenham in the late fifties, the only child of a dinner lady and a planning engineer. Raised in a working-class area, Geoff and his mates found much joy recreating battles with their beloved Tommy guns, kicking a beachball around until its untimely death, and collecting anything and everything they could find; football cards, conkers and Action Man figures.
When Geoff passes his 11-plus exams he gets in to a Cheltenham Grammar School, a school which drastically changes the trajectory of his life.
