Lights Out: Recovering Our Night Sky | Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
Mar 23, 2023–Dec 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Artificial lights have become such a common nighttime fixture that we take them for granted. But what do brighter nights mean for people and wildlife? The effects of light pollution extend beyond our reduced view of the stars, but solutions can have an immediate impact.
Through more than 100 photographs, nearly 250 objects, interactive experiences, tactile models, and a theater program, discover why the dark night matters, rekindle your connection to the night sky, and consider how much light at night is enough—for whom, for what purpose, and who gets to decide?
Barro Colorado Island 100 Years of Discoveries and Wonder | Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
Jan 1–Dec 31, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Celebrate the 100th Birthday of Barro Colorado Island Research Station by immersing yourself in a Panamanian jungle! From monkeys to microbes, research on the “most studied piece of tropical real estate in the world” gave rise to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, which now hosts 1200 scientists from 50 countries at 12 tropical research facilities, trains young biologists, and contributes new knowledge vital to the future of tropical forests and reefs.
Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist | National Gallery of Art
Mar 9–Jul 6, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Committed to both craft and causes, this visionary artist-activist continues to inspire us today. One of the defining artists of the 20th century, Elizabeth Catlett addressed the injustices she witnessed and experienced in America and Mexico through her bold prints and dynamic sculptures. See more than 150 of her creations in this exhibition, including rarely seen paintings and drawings. Trace the career of this cultural force—from her roots in Washington, DC, Chicago, and New York to the remarkable body of work she made during some 60 years in Mexico. In striving to make art for the people, Catlett put social justice at the very center of her work.
In the Tower: Chakaia Booker: Treading New Ground | National Gallery of Art
Apr 5–Aug 3, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
See three awe-inspiring sculptures by an American artist who transforms tires to explore environmental concerns.
For over four decades, Chakaia Booker has cut, coiled, and contorted tires, sculpting the industrial waste into spectacular abstract forms. Booker uses discarded tires both as a commentary on cultural histories and experiences and as a sustainable practice. Salvaging the tires avoids their disposal into landfills, where they trap and emit methane gas. Her works encourage us to consider the history of the material of tires as well as the effect rubber can have on our future.
Three monumental wall relief sculptures—Acid Rain (2001), Echoes in Black (Industrial Cicatrization) (1996), and It’s So Hard to Be Green (2000)—are presented. Each sculpture spans 20 to 21 feet wide and features a mass of curled bands of tire rubber, some interspersed with spiky shards, coiled strips, and loops made from inner tubes. Booker’s six-part photogravure series Foundling Warrior Quest (II 21C) (2010) showcases the artist as a mythical being foraging in a harsh, industrial landscape.
How to Be a Thrones Player: Tudor Edition | Folger Shakespeare Library
Feb 21–Jul 31, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Social climbing was a competitive sport in Tudor England, requiring a complex range of skills, strategies, and techniques. How to Be a Power Player: Tudor Edition invites you into a world of lace ruffs, jousting, hawks, bad handwriting, scandal, and political factions. Experience the playbooks, the people, and the spectacular fails, as courtiers tried to navigate the minefield of working for a boss who could shower you with riches or chop off your head.
The exhibition features more than 60 objects from the Folger’s collection to demonstrate the “rules” for how to be a successful courtier. They show how historical and literary figures ranging from royal advisors to household staff used cunning, cutthroat, and creative means to acquire power and curry favor with the Tudor monarchs.

Africa Fintech Summit 2025 | Halcyon Georgetown LLC
Apr 24, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Join other innovators, startups, corporations, financial service providers, tech companies, investors, and regulators as they share knowledge, zoom in on the trends, and opportunities informing the direction of fintech in Africa at the Africa Fintech Summit, Washington D.C, United States of America.
Since 2018, twice a year, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 that saw only one edition of the Africa Fintech Summit each, we’ve brought together innovators from different financial and technology verticals to engage in thoughtfully designed community-oriented experiences. Each April, AFTS is a headlining sidelines event that holds during the Spring Meetings of The World Bank/IFC. And in November, another edition takes place in a selected African country.
The objectives of these meetings have been to foster ecosystem-building conversations, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration between key stakeholders across the African and global fintech value chain. AFTS has always been a forum where innovators, investors, regulators, and thought leaders can define the future of Africa's fintech industry and map out ways that critical stakeholders can optimize for success. The outstanding results stemming from all previous eight editions of the Africa Fintech Summit have made a seventh meeting inevitable, and so we return to Washington D.C. this year.
AFTSDC2023 is the 9th edition of the Africa Fintech Summit and will take place on the 13th of April, 2023. Venue yet to be announced.
The thesis that drove AFTS in 2022 is what we have come to call, 'the Africanization of Global Fintech.' This theme encompasses a variety of trends that have emerged in recent months including, the legitimization of African fintech as a global asset class, the expansion of African fintech beyond the shores of the continent, and the 'Africanization' of the sector itself through an increased focus on homegrown tech talent and locally available funding mechanisms. 2023 plans to leverage current trends and happenings, as well as provide innovators with a driving philosophy.
And with over 80+ Trend-Defining Speakers and 1000+ Attendees from 40+ Countries projected to be in attendance, AFTSDC2022 promises to be the perfect stage for these conversations. Also, as usual, we’ve lined up a slew of value-laden sessions you can look forward to, including:

From Guardians to Enablers? | McGhee Library, ICC 301
Apr 28, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Over the past decades, demographic and societal shifts have reshaped Western Europe's political landscape. While much attention has been given to the decline of social democracy and the rise of the populist radical right, the trajectory of the mainstream right has been comparatively overlooked. This presentation addresses this gap by highlighting the crucial role mainstream right parties have historically played in upholding liberal democracy in the region—a role that is increasingly uncertain. Although empirical evidence suggests that these parties generally support liberal democratic norms, they face growing pressures that may lead them to accommodate or amplify the illiberal agenda of the populist radical right. Whether through coalition-building or governance arrangements, mainstream right parties risk legitimizing far-right ideas and practices, with profound consequences for democratic stability. Understanding this dynamic is essential not only for assessing the future of social democracy but also for safeguarding democratic integrity in Western Europe and beyond.
Dr. Cristóbal Rovira Kaltwasser is a Professor at the Institute of Political Science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and Director of the Laboratory for the Study of the Far Right (Ultra-Lab). He has published extensively on populism from a comparative perspective and is currently researching the far right in Latin America within a broader global framework.
We hope you'll join us for this event on Monday, April 28 in McGhee Library from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. Free lunch will be provided!

The ’70s Lens: Reimagining Documentary Photography | National Gallery of Art
Oct 6, 2024–Apr 6, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Washington D.C.
The 1970s was a decade of uncertainty in the United States. Americans witnessed soaring inflation, energy crises, and the Watergate scandal, as well as protests about pressing issues such as the Vietnam War, women’s rights, gay liberation, and the environment. The country’s profound upheaval formed the backdrop for a revolution in documentary photography. Activism and a growing awareness and acceptance of diversity opened the field to underrepresented voices. At the same time, artistic experimentation fueled the reimagining of what documentary photographs could look like. Featuring some 100 works by more than 80 artists, The ʼ70s Lens examines how photographers reinvented documentary practice during this radical shift in American life. Mikki Ferrill and Frank Espada used the camera to create complex portraits of their communities. Tseng Kwong Chi and Susan Hiller demonstrated photography’s role in the development of performance and conceptual art. With pictures of suburban sprawl, artists like Lewis Baltz and Joe Deal challenged popular ideas of nature as pristine. And Michael Jang and Joanne Leonard made interior views that examine the social landscape of domestic spaces. The questions these artists explored—about photography’s ethics, truth, and power—continue to be considered today.
