Theatersport-wedstrijd, Eindhovense derby: Dulcinea tegen Dikke Duim! | Philips Toneel
Feb 1, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Eindhoven

Corsano, Zimmermann and Pitsiokos | Vestdijk 25
Feb 15, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Eindhoven
Chris Corsano, Tizia Zimmermann and Chris Pitsiokos first played together in New York in summer 2023, during Tizia's six-month stint in the big city. The trio quickly found a collective language drawing on their highly personal approaches to their respective instruments and their shared interests in free jazz, improvised music, drone and noise. Always in the process of discovery, each performance involves further revelations of until-then unimagined musical forms. Chris Pitsiokos is a New York-born, Berlin-based saxophonist, composer and improviser. While Pitsiokos does not concern himself with genre, broadly speaking his music falls under the umbrella of experimentalism, including noise, sound art, improvised music, experimental jazz, free jazz, noise rock, new music, minimal music, drone and art rock. As a soloist he has developed a unique voice on the alto saxophone: his expansion of the instrument’s vocabulary has served to multiply its emotive and formal possibilities. He has recorded over 30 albums as a leader or co-leader and appears on many others. As a bandleader and soloist, he has toured throughout Asia, North and South America and Europe. His touring has taken him to major international festivals such as Sapporo International Arts Festival in Japan, Moers Festival in Germany, Jazz Jantar in Poland, Jazz Festival Lima in Peru, Wels Unlimited Music Festival in Austria, Jazz Festival Saalfelden in Austria, Meteo Mulhouse Festival in France, Jazz Cerkno in Slovenia, and the Observatory in Singapore. In New York, his music has been presented at Roulette Intermedium, ISSUE Project Room, and in a residency at the Stone. His writing has appeared in Arcana (edited by John Zorn), and in many articles in the now defunct Sound American, where Pitsiokos was on the editorial board. He is known for his solo saxophone performance, his audio-visual electro-acoustic piece “Irrational Rhythms and Shifting Poles”, his band CP Unit and his longstanding duo with Otomo Yoshihide. He has also performed with Axel Dörner, Keiji Haino, Mazen Kerbaj, Tony Buck, Wendy Eisenberg, Nate Wooley, Miya Masaoka, Paul Lytton, Peter Evans, Weasel Walter, Jaimie Branch, Chris Corsano, Oli Steidle, Elias Stemeseder, and Tyshawn Sorey. As an organizer, Pitsiokos presented concerts independently in New York from 2013 until 2022 when he relocated to Berlin. In Berlin he co-curated the program at Sowieso from 2022-2023 before starting a new venue, Richten25 and its parent-verein Odamusic e.V. in 2024 with a collective of seven other artists. Tizia Zimmermann has wanted to be a musician ever since she first held an accordion in her hand. She studied classical music on the accordion at the Bern University of the Arts, where she graduated with honours with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Performance. In addition to interpreting contemporary classical music, she plays in various formations in which free improvisation plays an important role. She is also active in the organisation of various platforms for experimental and improvised music in Zurich, such as the Gamut Kollektiv, the concert series ‘It happens when it happens’ and is part of the label Wide Ear Records. She has played with musicians and in ensembles/orchestras such as Collegium Novum Zurich, Philharmonie Zurich, Chris Pitsiokos, Jason Nazary, Jasper Stadhouders, Lucas Niggli, Pablo Lienhard, Christian Weber, Manuel Troller and many others and has played at festivals such as Jazzfestival Willisau, Météo Mulhouse Festival, Jazz em Agosto Festival and Moers Festival among others and won prizes and scholarships such as the Friedl Wald Foundation and the studio scholarship of the City of Zurich in NYC 2023. Chris Corsano (b. 1975, USA) is a New York-based drummer who has been active at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and experimental music since the late 1990's. He's been the rim-batterer of choice for some of the greatest contemporary purveyors of jazz (Joe McPhee, Paul Flaherty, Mette Rasmussen, Zoh Amba) and rock (Sir Richard Bishop, Bill Orcutt, Jim O'Rourke), as well as artists beyond categorization (Björk for her Volta album and world tour, Michael Flower, Okkyung Lee). Corsano began a long-standing, high-energy musical partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty in 1998. Their style, which they occasionally refer to with (semi-)tongue-in-cheek humor as The Hated Music , combines modern free-jazz's ecstatic collectivism with the urgency and intensity of hardcore punk. A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop his solo music -- a dynamic, spontaneously-composed orchestra-of-one utilizing extended techniques for drum set, non-percussive instruments of his own creation (e.g. bowed violin strings stretched across drum heads), circular breathing on modified reed instruments, and stockpiles of resonant metals. He spent 2007-08 as the drummer on Björk's Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Michael Flower, and Jandek. He moved back to the U.S. in 2009 and continued touring in an ultrawide array of ever-evolving collaborations. In 2017 he won the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award. A renowned solo performer in his own right, Corsano has a new solo record, The Key (Became The Important Thing out on the Drag City label.
His dedication to collective improvisation has led to Corsano to join forces with many kindred spirits and his appearance on over 180 records and thousands of live performances. He's worked with, among others: Paul Dunmall (released by the label: ESP-Disk), Joe McPhee (Roaratorio), Okkyung Lee (Open Mouth), Bill Orcutt (Palilalia), Mette Rasmussen (Hot Cars Warp Records & Clean Feed), John Edwards (OTOroku & Dancing Wayang), Sylvie Courvoisier (Relative Pitch), Nate Wooley (No Business & Astral Spirits), Jim O'Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City & Polystar), Merzbow (Family Vineyard), Jessica Rylan (Load Records), Rodrigo Amado (Trost), Nels Cline (Strange Attractors), Heather Leigh (Volcanic Tongue), Ghédalia Tazartès (Ultra Eczema), Ken Vandermark (Audiographic), and Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand).

Zwerm & Karen Willems - electric guitar quartet, drums, soundtrack & video | Vestdijk 25
Feb 21, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Eindhoven
The Five- electric guitar quartet, drums, soundtrack & video Music by composer Merijn Bisschops inspired by a new, yet to be published book by Dutch author A.H.J. Dautzenberg. At first hearing, The Five is a rather brutal piece of music with influences of drone doom metal, but it contains a challenging sophistication, microtonal influences and rich emotional contrasts. Performed with alienating video images of dancers, The Five is an overwhelming and haunting experience.
In the novel De Vijf, a libertine narrative, A.H.J. Dautzenberg explores freedom of expression in the current era, and in particular the position of art in that discourse. Scheduled for publication in 2024, publisher Atlas Contact already describes the book as the new Max Havelaar; one of the most important books in Dutch Literature. Merijn Bisschops - www.merijnbisschops.nl
Composer and visual artist Merijn Bisschops creates experiences that offer people an unusual perspective on themselves, their environment and art in particular. Refinement, layered texture sand versatile associations characterize his artistic work. He creates total works of art in which various disciplines are intertwined and he works as a composer, photographer and video maker on behalf of ensembles and festivals or in collaboration with other artists. The work of Merijn Bisschops was performed and shown at November Music, Wonderfeel, Gaudeamus, De Link, Het Orgelpark, Galerie Marzee, De Pont, Van Abbemuseum, EYEfilmmuseum, Theaterfestival Boulevard, Museum Beeld en Geluid, Meer dan Muziek Festival (NL), Sound Plasma (DE), Arena Festival (LVA), Florianka Recital Hall (PL), 48th Dimitria Festival (GR), Procembalo (Italië), NCTU Arts Centre (TW). He made exhibitions in Hilvaria Studio’s, DatBolwerck, Museum De Wieger, LocHal, Cacaofabriek (NL), SE Center for Photography, Cinesonika(US) amongst others. From 2006 till 2022 he was artistic and business director of De Link, an organisation for contemporary composed music in Tilburg (NL) Zwerm & Karen Willems
For the past ten years, the Belgian electric guitar quartet Zwerm has danced from a shared curiosity for all kinds of music between renaissance music, contemporary composed music and experimental pop/rock. They gave concerts in the UK, Europe, Mexico, Iran and the United States at festivals such as Holland Festival, Ruhr Triennale and Ultima Festival. They have collaborated with Stephen O’Malley, Fred Frith, Rudy Trouvé, Joanna Baillie, Serge Verstockt & Champ d’Action, Larry Polansky, Yannis Kyriakides and Stefan Prins, among others.Zwerm is Toon Callier, Johannes Westendorp, Bruno Nelissen and Kobe van Cauwenberghe and often plays together with drummer Karen Willems. www.zwerm.be A.H.J. Dautzenberg
A.H.J. Dautzenberg made his debut in 2010 with the collection of short storiesVogels met zwarte poten kun je niet eten. Several reviewers proclaimed the book Debut of the Year. Since then he has been writing at a steady pace to a versatile oeuvre of novels, essays, letters, plays, stories and poems. He is a valued reformer of literature, who likes to explore and push (literary) boundaries. Dautzenberg also distinguishes itself through its social involvement. A writer who is not only committed, but also acts accordingly. In 2016 he won the Impact Award for the poverty glossy Quiet 500.www.ahjdautzenberg.nl
