Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits | Auckland Art Gallery
2024年9月18日–2026年11月29日 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Representations of tūpuna, ancestors, hold profound significance in te ao Māori, the Māori world. They embody customary cultural values including mana, tapu and mauri (prestige, sacredness and life force) and hold the ancestral ties of whakapapa. For centuries, representations of tūpuna were given form through whakairo (carving). The mediums of painting and photography were adopted from the mid-19th century for this purpose, with these new forms of portraiture congregating among or standing in place of whakairo in whare tūpuna (ancestral meeting houses) and their modern equivalents.
Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits brings together whakairo and oil paintings from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, offering insights into the significance of tūpuna representations within te ao Māori. ‘Ngā taonga’ means many treasures while ‘tūturu’ signifies something permanent, true and original. This exhibition considers the inherent cultural values embodied and expressed within and through these taonga from a te ao Māori view.
One of the most prolific portraitists of the late 19th and early 20th-century, Gottfried Lindauer’s paintings acknowledge the mana and self-determination of tūpuna through his respectful evocation of their likeness. They were widely commissioned by Māori and Pākehā (European New Zealander) alike. The portraits in this exhibition radiate outwards from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, representing iwi (tribe) and hapū (subtribe) from throughout the motu (island). Recalling a whare tupuna, the gallery resonates with the mauri of these tūpuna.

Jenny Holzer | STATEMENT – Truisms + | Auckland Art Gallery
Mar 27, 2024–Apr 26, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Jenny Holzer’s text works, called Truisms, were first executed as pithy and sometimes provocative slogans on the streets of New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s as stickers, t-shirts and posters, with the intention of taking art out of the museum and into public life. Holzer quickly converted these statements to the media of advertising and public communication with a series of pivotal LED signs, most famously in New York’s Times Square.
Holzer’s use of electronic technology is, she says, motivated by ‘needing to be where people look’. Hanging suspended from the ceiling of the Gallery’s South Atrium, in STATEMENT – Truisms +, 2015 iconic statements like ‘ABUSE OF POWER COMES AS NO SURPRISE’ and ‘ENSURE THAT YOUR LIFE STAYS IN FLUX’ cascade and flash in speech-like pulsating rhythms and rainbow spectrums of colour, seemingly with a life of their own.

Taimoana | Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa | Auckland Art Gallery
Apr 20, 2024–Jun 7, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Taimoana | Coastlines explores the art of Aotearoa New Zealand, locating it within Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the wider Pacific region. Taking the concept of the coast, or shoreline, as a starting point, the exhibition navigates a sea of ideas, offering multiple perspectives on New Zealand art through a selection of works from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
The coast is central to the way of life of many in Aotearoa New Zealand and it has been throughout our entire history. Integral to te ao Māori, the Māori world, the interconnectedness of land and sea is reflected in cultural narratives and practices. The coast is at times a source of sustenance and employment, at others a route for travel, a space of recreation, conflict, well-being or inspiration, but also, as the climate continues to change, at the frontline of danger. The coast is a threshold, an in-between zone, a perpetually shifting meeting point of land and sea that prompts us to examine our relationships with both.
In this exhibition, artists from the 18th century to today ride the oceans’ currents, traversing themes from the enormity of the Pacific to the vessels that have crossed its expanse and plied Aotearoa’s coasts, and exploring their personal responses to the shore as well as the legacies of colonial encounters and conflict.

Shen Yun 2025 | Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Aotea Centre
Feb 20, 2025 (UTC+12)ENDED
Auckland
A Divine Culture—LostThrough breathtaking dance and music, Shen Yun’s artists tell of a time when divine beings walked upon the earth, leaving behind a culture that inspired generations. Ancient Chinese wisdom, infused with Buddhist and Taoist spirituality and values, gave birth to everything from medical innovations to opera, dance, architecture, and even martial arts. But after decades of communist rule, much of this divinely inspired culture has been destroyed or forgotten. 5,000 Years of Civilization RebornShen Yun is a brilliant artistic revival and celebration of China’s rich cultural heritage. Each performance consists of about 20 pieces, quickly moving from one legend, region, or dynasty to the next. Themes range from the delicate elegance of Tang court ladies to the battlefield heroics of valiant generals, from the timeless philosophical works of Lao-Tzu to spectacular scenes of magical realms. Some pieces also touch upon the topic of today’s China, shedding light on the oppression many experience for their spiritual beliefs, such as Falun Dafa. These tales of courage are often what audience members find the most touching and uplifting. Shen Yun’s works convey the extraordinary depth and breadth of genuine Chinese culture, and bring the magnificence of five thousand years of civilization back to life on stage. Prepay for colours here to receive 20% discount !!! Click on Tickets button on this page to prepay for coloursYou must bring printed prepaid colour ticket to pickup your colours on the day (Prepaid Stalls)This is STRICTLY a Smoke and Alcohol-Free eventStay up to date on Facebook: facebook.com/HoliFestivalNZ/FAQsAre there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?Nope, this is a family-friendly event. Fun for all! What are my transport/parking options getting to the event? As the venue is a 30min drive from Auckland CBD, the majority of festival-goers drive to the venue. Please note that public transport to the venue is limited. You've been warned. Is parking provided?Yes, we have free parking at the festival on a first-come-first-served basis. We have a lot of parking space, but if you arrive too late for on-site parking, then please park safely (i.e., not on the main highway!) on the side roads, and walk to the site. What can/can't I bring to the event? As conditions of entry, you cannot bring your own colours or food into the venue. These will be available for purchase at the venue. Also, no alcohol, smoking, or recreational drugs permitted onsite - the event is family-friendly and on temple grounds. - Please see detailed conditions of entry here: http://conditions.holi.org.nz Where can I contact the organisers with any questions? You can use the contact organiser buttons on the right-hand side to get in touch. Sooner the better - questions sent a week before won't get a look in as we will be crazy busy and likely a bit grumpy :-) Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? You only need to print your prepaid colours. Colours will be sold on the day as normal also. Will Colours / Food be available for sale on the day?Yes. Colours are $5 per bag (20% discount for prepaid colours purchased here) Food stalls throughout the event offer food at various prices. What is the colour powder made from? Is it safe? Our colours are made from food-grade corn starch and are non-toxic. In past festivals, we had a handful of people needing their eyes washed out by St John's ambo who are on-site for minor issues. As with most things, common sense prevails, if you have medical conditions that would be aggravated by corn starch dust, it would best to stay away from the main crowd by the stage. Will the colours wash out of me and my clothes? They will wash out of you and eventually from clothing. Best not to bring your designer wears. Recommended clothing colour is white of course! Bring something to cover your car seats for your ride home also. People with very light coloured hair, the colours may in limited cases stay in your hair longer. You have been warned. You can google various methods others have used to minimise the time taken for light coloured hair to recover. Can I bring my kids?Yes! We don't have any age restrictions and aim to be family-friendly. But remember, you are responsible for any minors you bring. Please be mindful that it is a large event with thousands of people. Keep very young children away from the main stage because of the loud sound and packed dancing crowds. There is plenty of open space for small kids to enjoy the festival and play with colours. Is this a commercial Holi Festival?Nope - this Holi event is run and supported by a registered charity, volunteers, and donors/sponsors. This is the real deal Holi and not a for-profit Holi-inspired event with commercial motives. We have introduced a few innovations such as the colour throws and dance music, but remain loyal to the cultural and spiritual roots of the celebration. Is there any running involved?Nope. You just gotta dance till you can't dance no more! Can I take photos and videos at the festival?Yes, remember to protect your gear from the powder dust. If you're a pro, contact us for a media pass. What are the terms of conditions of entry? You can read them here http://conditions.holi.org.nz G lobal Party People Instagram Youtube Tik Tok Facebook Spotify Music

The groups they get put in are based on their skill level and age, or with the coach we think will be the most beneficial! Classes are open to all ages and abilities.
