After a decade of yearning for parenthood, years marked by miscarriage after miscarriage, Hala Alyan makes the decision to use a surrogate. In this charged time, she turns to the archetype of the waiting woman—the Scheherazade who tells stories to ensure another dawn—to confront her own narratives of motherhood, love, and inheritance. As her baby grows in the body of another woman, in another country, Hala finds her own life unraveling—a husband who wants to leave; the cost of past traumas and addictions threatening to resurface; the city of her youth, Beirut, on the brink of crisis. She turns to family stories and communal myths: of grandmothers mapping their lives through Palestine, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon; of eradicated villages and invading armies; of places of refuge that proved only temporary; of men that left and women that stayed; of the contradictions of her own Midwestern childhood, and adolescence in various Arab cities. Meanwhile, as the baby grows from the size of a poppyseed to a grain of rice, then a lime, and beyond, Hala gathers the stories that are her legacy, setting down the ones that confine, holding close those that liberate. It is emotionally charged, painstaking work, but now the stakes are higher: how to honor ancestors and future generations alike in the midst of displacement? How to impart love for those who are no longer here, for places one can no longer touch? A stunningly lyrical and brutally honest quest for motherhood, selfhood, and peoplehood, I’ll Tell You When I’m Home is a powerful story of unraveling and becoming, of destruction and redemption, and of homelands lost and recreated. Photo credit: Mustafa Mirza Hala Alyan is the author of the novels Salt Houses —winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the Arab American Book Award, and a finalist for the Chautauqua Prize—and The Arsonists’ City , a finalist for the Aspen Words Literary Prize. She is also the author of five highly acclaimed collections of poetry, including The Twenty-Ninth Year and The Moon That Turns You Back . Her work has been published by The New Yorker, The Academy of American Poets, The New York Times, The Guardian , and Guernica . She lives in Brooklyn with her family, where she works as a clinical psychologist and professor at New York University. Photo credit: Grace Ann Leadbeater Leslie Jamison is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Splinters , The Recovering, and The Empathy Exams ; the collection of essays Make It Scream, Make It Burn, a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award; and the novel The Gin Closet, a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize. She is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine , and her work has appeared in publications including The Atlantic, Harper’s, the New York Times Book Review, the Oxford American, and the Virginia Quarterly Review , among many others. In-Person Family & Systemic Constellations Workshop with Luisa Muhr (FCNYC) | Balance Arts Center

Jun 5, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
New York
Cultural Experiences
Please find more information on Family & Systemic Constellations with Luisa Muhr here: www.familyconstellationsnyc.com "Family and Systemic Constellation work is initiating movement deep within the soul. This movement then translates to the practical world." "I empower people who currently feel stuck and seek change, who want to get a deeper understanding of their own social patterns, and are curious about their origins,,by guiding them through healing movements,,deeply rooted in their family system." -- Luisa Muhr What is Family & Systemic Constellation work? Developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the 1990's, Family Constellations is an alternative form of therapy work. With its roots in Zulu traditions, Psychotherapy, Psychodrama, Family Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Virgina Satir's "Sculptures", Primal Therapy, Hypnotherapy, and more, this work in its current incarnation, was first and foremost developed to heal Holocaust trauma in Central and Eastern Europe, but eventually spread across the world and has been applied to pretty much any type of issues and systemic wounds. Constellation work involves a group of people who come together, seated in a circle, offering their awareness and presence and thus creating a, what Constellations Practitioners call, “work field”. It is an energy field and is where the work takes place. In a virtual setting we will explore this field (and its multitudes) in new dimensions. The basic principle of Family Constellations is based on the idea that certain issues and patterns we encounter in our daily lives (either on the surface or in the subconscious) are always somehow connected to and deeply rooted in our ancestry. What often is missing is the awareness of these connections. What to expect? We will break some patterns that have made us feel stuck and focus on some in-depth healing through Family & Systemic Constellations. If you intend to have your own Constellation set up, please bring any major personal issue that you are currently dealing with (doesn't have to be connected to a family issue). There is no guarantee that you will get to have your issue be worked on. One spot will be reserved for one of Muhr's current Constellations trainees , the other will be decided via a drawing system, which leaves the decision of who gets to work up to the energy work field. Please note that no matter if you get to work on your own issue or are participating in the Constellation of someone else, the healing is usually profound for ALL participants in the room. Someone else's issue could speak directly to an issue in your own system, and -- if you are conscious of it or not --usually does. About the Facilitator: Luisa Muhr is a New-York-based interdisciplinary artist and healing arts practitioner, specializing in Family & Systemic Constellations. She is originally from Vienna (Austria), with Hungarian and Anatolian-Greek roots. As the descendant of her great-grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, Constellation work has always played an integral part in Muhr’s life. With now more than 19 years of experience in Family and Systemic Constellations, she was first introduced to Family Constellations, Guided Imagery work (Katathym-imaginative Psychotherapy), and Astrology as a young child through her mother and has been shaped by all of these modalities since. Constellation work was a part of Muhr's life on a monthly to bi-monthly basis, starting when she was 9 years old in her childhood home in Austria, where her mother to this day organizes Constellations workshops. By the time Muhr turned 14 she actively started to participate in Constellations workshops, which were facilitated by her later mentor, Dr. Peter Orban, one of Germany's most prominent Family Constellations facilitators, who was also one of Bert Hellinger's early students. This eventually lead to Muhr completing her Family & Systemic Constellations certification training program with Dr. Orban. Inspired by her mentor, Muhr’s Constellation work can also include a large variety of archetypes (rooted in Carl Jung's teachings). As a Family and Systemic Constellations practitioner she currently works and has worked at OHM Center, MINKA Brooklyn, Balance Arts Center, Maha Rose (all in New York), and Kripalu Center (Massachusetts). Muhr has also been featured on Kimberly Ann Johnson’s renowned "Sex, Birth, Trauma" podcast, amongst others. Additionally, Muhr is a certified Deep Listening® practitioner (after experimental composer and pioneer Pauline Oliveros, by the Center For Deep Listening), combining art and healing work in a profound and fully embodied way. During the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic Muhr started to develop and shape a virtual Constellations platform to continuously provide healing for people around the world, as well as offer her yearly Constellations Training Program. Muhr is holding regular workshops on a large variety of platforms and feels strongly about the importance of offering healing space to diverse, marginalized groups of people. In March 2020 she was scheduled to be a panelist and presenter at University of Michigan, discussing the healing aspects of "Field Work" in the arts/performance practice and in Family Constellation work, which due to the COVID-19 pandemic had to be cancelled. Apart from her work as a healing arts practitioner Muhr is a multi- and interdisciplinary creator and performer, specializing in vocal, movement, performance, installation, and sound art, as well as experimental theater. She also runs New York's leading interdisciplinary womxn and non-binary artists series Women Between Arts (at The New School Glassbox Theater). Muhr has been featured on some of New York's most highly acclaimed stages and venues and tirelessly keeps creating new performance work. She deeply believes in the power of different types of energy Field Work and that healing happens through multiple shapes, forms, and lenses, the arts being one of them, Constellation work another. This workshop will be attended by Muhr's current Family Constellations Training cohort, as part of their training. The structure of and the agreement for the workshop are exactly the same as any other. Other offerings : Luisa also offers one-on-one sessions at a sliding scale rate of $110-280. Light of the Sun -- Ancient Shu Civilization and the World | United Nations Headquarters

Jun 9–Jun 20, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
Themed "Light of the Sun -- Ancient Shu Civilization and the World," the exhibition draws on artifacts and motifs from the renowned Sanxingdui and Jinsha archaeological sites in southwest China, which date back approximately 3,600 to 2,800 years. The display marks the first time the ancient Shu civilization has been presented at the UN and serves as a featured event of the newly established International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, observed annually on June 10. The exhibition is designed as a conversation between past civilizations and the present day. It features informational panels, replicas of cultural relics, art installations and interactive multimedia, exploring how ancient societies across the world revered the sun as a source of power, divinity and renewal. The exhibition is divided into two thematic sections. The first, titled "Radiance of Civilizations," surveys sun-worship traditions across ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and Greece. The second, "Shining Shu," focuses on the unique spiritual expressions of the ancient Shu civilization, showcasing high-fidelity replicas of cultural relics unearthed from the Sanxingdui and Jinsha sites -- including the Golden Sun Bird, bronze sacred trees, gold masks and gold-crowned human figures. Among the highlights is the Golden Sun Bird, a delicately carved gold disc that has become the official emblem of China's cultural heritage. With its intricate openwork design and spiraling solar motif, it is widely viewed as a symbolic representation of the ancient Chinese cosmological worldview. Other items, such as a gold mask worn by human figures and bronze ritual trees, illustrate the Shu people's rich spiritual beliefs and ceremonial practices. To enhance the visitor experience, the exhibition employs cutting-edge digital technologies, including naked-eye 3D projections, VR simulations, and floor-to-ceiling animated displays. One of the standout features, titled "Return to Ancient Shu," allows guests to explore the excavation process and archaeological findings through immersive visual storytelling. Visitors can also don VR headsets to virtually enter the Jinsha dig site and experience the moment of artifact discovery.
