How Can We Create a Good Food Future? | International Anthony Burgess Foundation

May 12, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Manchester
Cultural Experiences
The Food System Challenge Every day, we encounter diverse and sometimes conflicting advice about what to eat—for our health and for our planet. Our current food system has an enormous impact, consuming vast amounts of fossil fuels, chemicals, and land. Consequences of Our Current Approach For decades, we've focused on maximizing productivity through technology, but this approach has consequences. Our soils are becoming less fertile, threatening future food security, while extreme weather events challenge our food supply's resilience. The True Cost of Food Industrial animal farming provides inexpensive meat, but at significant costs to animal welfare, the environment, and public health. New plant-based alternatives offer additional choices, but are they complete solutions? How can nutritious food become accessible and affordable for everyone when fast food is often cheaper than fresh options? And who should take responsibility for making positive changes? Reimagining Food as a Force for Good If food has such a major influence on our world, how might we transform what we grow and eat into a force for good? Join the Conversation In this session, Dr. Mitchell invites us to explore our power as both consumers and citizens to shape a new future for food and farming. Together, we'll navigate the complex challenges facing our food system and discover how we can create our own "good food future"—one that helps restore nature and climate while ensuring healthy food is available to all. Join us on this journey of exploration as we reimagine our relationship with food! Practical Information The presentation will include time for questions and discussion. Light refreshments can be purchased from the venue’s bar. Booking is essential. Lit & Phil members : we recommend logging into the website to make booking your free member ticket quicker and easier. Accessibility Information The venue is wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet on the ground floor. An Evening with Oisín McKenna at Waterstones Deansgate | Waterstones

Manchester
Cultural Experiences
We are delighted to welcome debut author Oisín McKenna to Deansgate in celebration of his stunning first novel, Evenings and Weekends . Over the hottest summer on record, a group of interconnected Londoners love, laugh and struggle through their messy lives in McKenna's vibrant, kaleidoscopic debut. Oisín, in conversation with Jodie Matthews, will chat about his novel and answer audience questions, followed by a signing. Doors at 6pm. About Evenings and Weekends Summer in London stops for no-one. Not the half-naked boozers, stoners, and cruisers, the hen parties glugging from bejewelled bottles, the drag queens puffing on hurried fags. It’s June 2019, and everyone has converged on the city’s parks, beer gardens and street corners to revel in the collective joys of being alive. Everyone but Maggie. She’s 30, pregnant and broke. Faced with moving back to the town she fought to escape, she’s wondering if having a baby with boyfriend Ed will be the last spontaneous act of her life. Ed, meanwhile, is trying to run from his past with Maggie’s best friend Phil and harbouring secret dreams of his own. Phil hates his office job and is living for the weekend, while falling for his housemate, Keith. But there’s a problem: Keith has a boyfriend and there might not be room for three people in the relationship. Then there’s Rosaleen, Phil’s mother, who’s tired of feeling like a side character in her own life. She’s just been diagnosed with cancer and is travelling to London to tell Phil, if she can ever get hold of him. Psychosis: Beyond Them and Us, Finding Common Ground | Central Hall Manchester

Cultural Experiences
National Conference of ISPS UK - the UK network of the International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis. Users & survivors of mental health services, their families and carers and mental health workers are often seen as having opposing positions. Consequently, opportunities for finding common ground, developing authentic relationships, and true allyship are rare. Join us for this interactive and participatory conference where we'll be using the innovative Trialogue approach to explore our differences and take the first steps to how we can work more effectively together to tackle the issues that matter most to us all: inadequate services, inequality, poverty, discrimination and the wider factors underlying many people's experiences of madness and distress. The conference will be hosted and facilitated by Dr Líam MacGabhann . Dr Líam MacGabhann is a mental health practitioner, researcher, educationalist, and community activist. Along with a wide group of colleagues his main programme of research focuses on "Transforming Dialogues in Mental Health Communities”. Much of this work centres around people reconciling their own experiences, perceptions and practices with other people/groups associated with mental health and using different approaches to improve these at individual, group, organisational and community level. The event will conclude with the ISPS UK Annual General Meeting , where you can learn more about our work this past year, contribute to future decisions and discuss your thoughts/feedback with trustees. AGM papers will be circulated to members at least 14 days prior to the meeting. This gathering provides us with the invaluable chance to come together, share, celebrate, and collectively shape the path forward. We look forward to seeing you there. Lunch and refreshments will be provided as part of your ticket price. ISPS UK members receive a 40% discount on the published ticket price. Please ensure you use our member's discount code.
