Qi Baishi: Inspiration in Ink | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
May 3–Sep 28, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
Living in a time of civil and political turmoil, Qi Baishi (1864–1957) was renowned for his modernization of Chinese ink painting. Conveying rural sentiments with bold landscapes, lifelike animals and plants, and lively and amusing figures, Qi’s paintings of mundane objects and everyday life broke social and cultural barriers. His innovative experiments included the juxtaposition of vibrant colors against rich ink tones, a pronounced economy of form and composition, and vivid representations with revealing inscriptions. He also revitalized Chinese painting with expressive brushwork based on his calligraphic practice and seal carving. Qi is credited with transforming the traditional brush art of China’s educated elite into an expressionistic and abstract form that speaks clearly to the modern era.

Utopia, Dystopia: Tony Cokes and Oscar Muñoz | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Dec 14, 2024–Aug 24, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
“Utopia, Dystopia” presents two single-channel videos from the MFA collection by Tony Cokes (b. 1956) and Oscar Muñoz (b. 1951). Created in the last decade, the films grapple with the duality of utopia and dystopia, expressing the artists’ senses of how idealistic visions of society often collide with harsh realities. Utopian dreams can promise a future without oppression and celebrate freedom of expression, yet achieving these ideals frequently comes into conflict with underlying dystopian truths such as systems of control, state surveillance, and deep inequality.

Rituals for Remembering: María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Ana Mendieta | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Apr 12, 2025–Feb 15, 2026 (UTC-5)
Boston
This exhibition brings together works from the MFA’s collection by María Magdalena Campos-Pons (b. 1959) and Ana Mendieta (1948–1985) in the first focused look at these influential artists side by side. Though the two never met, their practices share a reckoning with displacement and exile from their homes in Cuba, a deep reverence for the land, and a transformative use of natural elements like water, earth, and fire. For both artists, memory, ritual, and spirituality animate their artworks across photography, film, video, drawing, sculpture, installation, and performance.

Deep Waters: Four Artists and the Sea | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Nov 9, 2024–Nov 9, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
Generations of artists have explored the beauties and terrors of the ocean, reflecting on the experiences of those who have lived and lost their lives among the waves. Weaving together artworks by four artists made over centuries and across the Atlantic, this exhibition follows a genealogical thread united by the sea. Echoes of John Singleton Copley’s Watson and the Shark (1778) reverberate in J. M. W Turner’s 1840 Slave Ship (Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying, Typhoon Coming On), which itself has influenced art created in the 21st century.

Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Mar 30–Sep 7, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) once wrote, “What I’m most passionate about…is the portrait, the modern portrait.” This passion flourished between 1888 and ’89 when, during his stay in Arles, in the South of France, the artist created a number of portraits of a neighboring family—the postman Joseph Roulin; his wife, Augustine; and their three children: Armand, Camille, and Marcelle. Van Gogh’s tender relationship with the postman and his family, and his groundbreaking portrayals of them, are at the heart of this exhibition, which is the first dedicated to the Roulin portraits and the deep bonds of friendship between the artist and this family.

Yu-Wen Wu: Reigning Beauty, 2025 | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Jun 17–Oct 14, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
This summer, violets, nasturtiums, and hydrangeas escape from the Gardner’s greenhouses and rain down the Anne H. Fitzpatrick Façade in a site-specific installation by Artist-in-Residence Yu-Wen Wu. Inspired by Isabella's passion for plants and the loving care given to our “Living Collection” by the Museum’s horticulture team, Wu composed a collage of photographs of the Gardner’s flowers, transforming individual blossoms into a windswept shower blooming bright against dark storm clouds.
At once an homage to the fleeting beauty of the natural world and meditation on the precious vulnerability of the environment, Reigning Beauty will crown the Façade from June 17 – October 14, 2025 and is part of this summer’s inaugural Boston Public Art Triennial.

Believers: Artists and the Shakers | Boston
Feb 13–Aug 3, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
Since arriving in America from England 250 years ago, the Shakers — a Christian sect of pacifists — have occupied a unique place in the American national identity. Also known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, the Shakers ascribe to values of communal living, celibacy, shared property, and gender and racial equality, and they are widely recognized for their simple living, architecture, music, and furniture. The Shakers have captured the imagination of countless artists since at least the early twentieth century, when ideas about perfection, elegance, and practicality associated with Shaker life and material culture took hold. These ideas entered more strongly into the American consciousness following a string of influential exhibitions and books, many of them organized and authored by collectors of Shaker furniture.
Christian Marclay: Doors | Boston
Apr 17–Sep 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
In Doors (2022), Marclay edited hundreds of film and television clips, focusing on the opening and closing of doors. This dynamic image collage took more than ten years to complete, and the materials cover almost all types of feature films, from the French New Wave to Hollywood blockbusters. Through meticulous editing, Marclay constructs a visual narrative in which the actors constantly enter new spaces, and each door becomes a node for editing, forming a transition between different films and sound fields. The work presents a labyrinthine journey in which the protagonists get lost and found again. Marclay describes the image as a sculptural presence - a "spiritual architecture that the audience may follow or get lost in."

Flowers for Isabella | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Jun 26–Sep 21, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
Join us this summer to dig into the roots of Isabella Stewart Gardner’s passion for plants. Both an avid gardener and a trailblazing curator, Isabella relished in her “deliriously glorious” garden at Green Hill—her estate in Brookline, Massachusetts—before she constructed her Museum. A site of respite and a testing ground for innovation, it was there that Isabella first cultivated the varieties that would fill the Museum Courtyard, honed her curatorial vision, and furthered her conviction that art and nature enliven one another. Isabella’s horticultural creativity is captured on the canvases of paintings on view throughout the Gardner Museum today.
Flowers for Isabella, on view from June 26 – September 21, 2025 in the Fenway Gallery, gathers archival materials and artworks from the Gardner collection depicting four of Isabella’s most cherished species—irises, peonies, chrysanthemums, and nasturtiums. Together they create a new portrait of the Museum’s founder just steps away from her ever-blooming Courtyard garden.
Ming Fay: Edge of the Garden | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Jun 26–Sep 21, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
What is a garden? A wild space? A curated collection of plants? Or a plot of soil in which to seed memory, connection, and creativity? This summer, the Gardner Museum’s Hostetter Gallery springs to life with the large-scale sculptures of Ming Fay (1943 – 2025), whose work reconsiders gardens as sites of creative potential that reflect the lives and desires of those who cultivate them.
At once playful and contemplative, Ming Fay: Edge of the Garden constructs a space of wonder that calls on visitors to view the world around them with new appreciation. Sculptures of fruits, seeds, shells, as well as hybrid plants borne of his boundless imagination, surprise in their unexpected pairings and sizes. Together, they conjure new meanings through familiar shapes, scents, and symbols. In his papier-mâché, bronze and ceramic gardens, Fay unites personal, collective, and cultural memories, building gardens as fantastical spaces born of curiosity, longing, and his own lived experiences as part of the Chinese diaspora in the United States.
On view from June 26 – September 21, 2025, Ming Fay: Edge of the Garden invites visitors to escape the city for a brief moment and marvel at the extraordinary, ordinary beauty of a maple tree twirler, a ripe cherry, or a crooked wishbone—and how they can unlock memory and imagination.
Where We Meet: Imagining Gardens and Futures, a partner exhibition at Pao Arts Center will explore the city of Boston’s Chinatown gardens through the art of Ming Fay, Mel Taing, and Yu-Wen Wu from July 18 – October 10, 2025.
