Sign My Name to Freedom: The Lost Music of Betty Reid Soskin Director: Bryan Gibel | Co-Director: AK Sandhu Join local filmmaker Bryan Gibel and members of the film team at the West Oakland Branch of the Oakland Public Library for a FREE exclusive sneak peek preview of “Sign My Name to Freedom,” a feature documentary about iconic National Park Ranger Betty Reid Soskin, her hidden life as a singer-songwriter, and her family’s experiences confronting Jim Crow-style segregation on the West Coast. The screening will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with Director Bryan Gibel, Co-Producer and Betty's Granddaughter Alyana Reid, Outreach Producer Stephisha Ycoy-Walton, a West Oakland Librarian representative, and special guest Photographer Henry Ralston. Betty gained fame as the oldest Park Ranger in the country after starting that job at the age of 85, and she continued working at the Rosie the Riveter National Historic Site as an interpretive oral historian until she retired at 100. Through her experience as a WWII file clerk for an all-black union auxiliary in Richmond, she helped to reshape the national narrative about home front segregation in the workplace, labor unions, and in the armed forces. The documentary takes Betty’s work for the Park Service as its jumping off point, and then it explores lesser-known aspects of her personal story, focusing in large part on her family’s role as the first African Americans to cross the color line into Walnut Creek, and her hidden life as a singer/songwriter in the years that followed. The film also looks at Betty’s journey in her 90s to reexplore the music she left behind fifty years earlier and her collaborations with younger musicians to give her songs life again. The film team is currently raising funds to complete the documentary while Betty is still with us to experience it, which she very much hopes can happen. Their goal is to finish the film by 2025. Although Betty is doing well at 103, the clock is ticking. Arts Fine Art
Join us for an insider’s look at the techniques and tricks Alice Beasley employs to attain the stunningly realistic fabric portraits of people and objects. Without the use of paint or other drawing materials Alice creates realistic portraits by assembling and layering fabric. She says: “I find color, light, shadow, line and value in the pattern of ordinary household fabrics. From these I snip small pieces which I arrange and fuse into a figurative composition. As such, the work grows from within rather than being applied to the surface of a canvas by paint, pencil or similar drawing tools. When the image is complete, I sew it together with the stitch line constituting the final “drawn” line.” In her studio she will demonstrate the process of printing fabric on her large, freestanding textile printer; cutting and assembling the resultant photo prints into shapes she transforms into figurative artwork. Final stitching is done on her longarm quilting machine which she will demonstrate. Alice’s work has been exhibited in many venues throughout the United States including the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum as well as abroad in Madrid, France, Japan and Namibia. It has been purchased or commissioned by a number of individuals and public entities including the DeYoung Museum, the city and county of San Francisco, the County of Alameda, Kaiser Hospital, Highland Hospital and the Sunnyvale Medical Facility. When registering please choose EITHER the 11am OR the 2pm tour: 11 am – noon OR 2 pm - 3Attendees will receive directions to Alice's studio 2 days before the event. Note: The studio is up a hill with many steps. Alice discusses Water Dance, her entry in the 2023 deYoung Open. Image courtesy of Alice Beasley Floating Into the Heat of the Moon.
