It's official! It's Strange Up North is returning for another exciting night filled with bookish fun! This year the event will be held on the 24th of May and will start at 5:30pm and end at 8:30pm. We're so looking forward to being joined by 15 fantasy, sci-fi and horror authors! No panels, simply a social gathering where readers can come in and chat to the authors and get their books signed. Tickets will be £10 and £5 of that will be redeemable towards the cost of a book purchased on the night. The full list of authors will be available here after the 2nd of April. As miffy turns 70, we look back at the well-loved character's rise to popularity through the charming books and simple illustrative style which made has made her famous across the world. The interactive exhibition will bring miffy to life through creative displays and activities which will offer an immersive and playful experience to enjoy. It will also explore aspects of Dick Bruna’s design philosophy and artwork through his 124 picture books, posters, book covers, logos and house styles for charities and worthy causes. The exhibition is curated in partnership with Mercis and will tour to Norfolks' Time and Tide museum after Leeds City Museum.

As part of Leeds Jazz festival we are delighted to be offering a creative immersive workshop for your under 5s at Leeds Art Gallery. Join us in the Studio to explore, play and create in response to the Lynette Yiadom-Boakye exhibition 'To improvise a mountain'. The children will be invited to express themsleves creatively with paint while 'Sketches of Spain' plays gently in the background. This course is the beginners guide to putting things like shelves on walls. You will learn to identify different kinds of walls and learn how to use the correct fixtures on them. This will include learning about hammer drills, masonry bits, rawl plugs and plasterboard fixtures. There will also be a discussion about avoiding cables and pipes. The course will end with using a spirit level to fit a shelf. About this event Duration 4 hours with with breaks Where is the course run? Set up camp for a day of wildness in the woods at TCV Skelton Grange... Activities will vary from session to session depending on the season and the group - but past Wild Play days have included: Wide games, shelter building, fire lighting, campfire cooking, field games, hammock hanging, wild food walks, woodwork crafts, string making, bows and arrows, stalking and tracking, pyro-carving and charcoal making. The cost per child is £33 (+ Eventbrite booking fee) and includes a day of outdoor games and bushcraft activities led by experienced leaders. Sessions run from 10am - 4pm. Please bring a packed lunch for the day. Please be aware that there is currently a security cabin and gate about halfway along Skelton Grange Road. This is for the construction site next door to the Environment Centre. If you travel by car they will probably note the vehicle registration, ask for the driver’s name and where you are going (tell them TCV). It is simply to keep track of traffic entering and leaving. If you are walking down you can go straight past. Essentially, don’t be worried when you see it, you are going to the right place! Wild play days are a chance to get away from screens for a day and enjoy being together outside without distractions. We would advise children not to bring a phone, but if they do we ask them to keep it in their bag during the day. My child has additional needs - can they still come? We will do everything that we can to support your child to be able to take part in our events although this will depend on what support needs your child has. She is a cognitive neuroscientist investigating visual perception, emotions, and mental imagery. She holds PhDs in both Biological Cybernetics and Neuroscience. Her recent research delves into how senses, our emotional states and our capacity for imaginative engagement influence our perceptions of art and nature. She is intrigued by the ways in which artists leverage their understanding of human senses and behaviours to enhance viewer engagement with their work. Dr Felisberti has collaborated extensively with art institutions such as Stanley Picker Gallery, Southbank Centre-Hayward Gallery, The Cultural Capital Exchange in the UK and various international research organisations. How Speed Dating Works in Leeds When you arrive at the Leeds venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. This Spring half term we're bringing you a special mini version of our ever popular Jesmonite Coaster Workshop In this mini workshop you'll make one coaster / trinket tray using a choice of premade coloured shards and a white jesmonite base. You'll leave your coaster to dry and should be able to collect it later that day, or pop into Chirpy anytime afterwards to collect it. This workshop is suitable for age 7+ however anyone under 13 must be accompanied by an adult (one adult could accompany a group of children). If the accompanying adult would also like to make a coaster then please book an additional ticket. Friday Night Social is our weekly wind down and provides an alcohol-free space for adults to chat and skate in Leeds. What is a Friday Night Skate Social? Come and skate, have a chat, meet other skaters in the community and unwind! Our skate marshalls are here to ensure everyone has a great time and skate safely. Skate hire (including protective pads) available - please ensure you purchase an Entry + Skate hire ticket for each person requiring skates. Hire skates are recalled at 21:45 and session end is 21:50 to allow us to clear the venue by 22:00. I have never roller skated before - is FNS for me? We welcome folks of all skill levels, including folks with very little or no experience. Our skate marshalls are more than happy to give you tips to get started, but are not able to provide any kind of tuition beyond this. Please come to Skate class on Sundays if you'd like a better breakdown of movements. What size hire skates do I need? We recommend you ask for your regular shoe size. If you try skates on and they're not right for you, we are happy to swap them. Our skate hire is available in full sizes only, from UK 3 - UK 15. You no longer need to book a specific ticket to tell us what size you require. I have a Skate Pass, do I still need to book? Yes, please still book your spot for FNS, and have your digital Skate Pass ready to show at check-in. Please remember that if you are not able to make it, our cancellation policy does still apply. Can I bring my own refreshments? Yes of course. We want to keep this skate space alcohol free, so ask you do not bring alcohol to consume on the premises, including the car park. If you bring your own water bottle, we are able to refill this for you for free. We also have a small selection of soft drinks for sale. Should you spill your drink, please let a marshall know straight away. Please make sure you are not eating and drinking while you skate, that includes chewing gum. Can I wear my own headphones? While we do our best to cater a wide mix of music that will suit most people, we appreciate that you may prefer your own music. It is fine to wear your own headphones, however you must be extra vigilant and fully aware of folks around you. If we feel you are not being considerate of other skaters or you miss instructions from our skate marshalls, we will ask you to remove them. I wear inline skates, can I come? Yup. We welcome all wheely-booted folks. I don't identify as a girl, can I come? Absolutely! The Skate Sanctuary was founded and is run by women, with the support of our fantastic volunteer team, to provide better access to roller skating for all genders and identities, especially marginalised folks. What do I do if I have a problem? Please speak to one of our skate marshall volunteers, who wear purple t-shirts. If they are unable to help you, they will find our lead skate marshall, who will do their best to assist. We have a Respect policy in place to keep everyone feeling as safe and supported as possible.
